Many people have tested their DNA and are looking for a safe, and free service where they can upload their DNA data and receive DNA matches. Millions of people have found new family members through MyHeritage. See this story about Rae Robinson, who had been searching for her paternal family for 31 years, trying many DNA testing services, until an upload to MyHeritage cracked the case.

The security researcher reported that no other data related to MyHeritage was found on the private server. There has been no evidence that the data in the file was ever used by the perpetrators. Since Oct 26, 2017 (the date of the breach) and the present we have not seen any activity indicating that any MyHeritage accounts had been compromised.

We believe the intrusion is limited to the user email addresses. We have no reason to believe that any other MyHeritage systems were compromised. As an example, credit card information is not stored on MyHeritage to begin with, but only on trusted third-party billing providers (e.g. BlueSnap, PayPal) utilized by MyHeritage. Other types of sensitive data such as family trees and DNA data are stored by MyHeritage on segregated systems, separate from those that store the email addresses, and they include added layers of security. We have no reason to believe those systems have been compromised.

MyHeritage users who have questions or concerns about this incident can contact our security customer support team via email on privacy@myheritage.com or by phone via the toll-free number (USA) +1 888 672 2875, available 24/7.

As always, your privacy and the security of your data are our highest priority. We continually assess our procedures and policies and seek new ways to improve our approach to security. We understand the importance of our role as custodians of your information and work every day to earn your trust.

I received my MyHeritage results a couple weeks ago and I am not being shown the option to download my raw data when I open the three dots menu. I feel properly scammed as the raw data is a big part of why I had the test done in the first place. Why is this so and how do I fix it?

Since 2016, MyHeritage has allowed users who have already tested their DNA to upload their DNA data from Ancestry, 23andMe and Family Tree DNA. They receive DNA Matches and ethnicity estimates on MyHeritage for free. Our free upload service is a unique benefit not offered by any of these other companies. However, previously MyHeritage did not support the upload of tests based on the chip called GSA (Global Screening Array), now being used by 23andMe (v5), and by Living DNA. Recent improvements to our DNA algorithms now allow us to support DNA data processed on GSA chips, and so we now support uploads of 23andMe v5 and Living DNA data files.

Uploading your DNA data to MyHeritage is fast and simple. For users that upload now, we offer full access to DNA Matching, Ethnicity Estimates, our industry-leading chromosome browser, and more, for FREE.

If you manage additional DNA kits for some of your relatives, and you have their permission, upload their DNA data too, and MyHeritage will let you associate the data with the respective individuals on your family tree. DNA data uploaded to MyHeritage is completely private and secure. Only you can see the DNA data you upload.

As of December 1, 2018, our policy regarding DNA uploads will change: DNA Matching will remain free for uploaded DNA data, but unlocking additional DNA features (for example, ethnicity estimate, chromosome browser, and some others) will require an extra payment for DNA files uploaded after this date. We will announce the full details of the new policy once it is finalized, closer to December 1st. All DNA data that was uploaded to MyHeritage in the past, and all DNA data that is uploaded now and prior to December 1, 2018, will continue to enjoy full access to all DNA features for free. These uploads will be grandfathered in and will remain free.

As a MyHeritage member, you can upload DNA data for someone else in your family tree, even if they are not a member of MyHeritage. You can upload the DNA data of as many close relatives of yours as you like, from as many DNA test kits as you like, provided that you obtain their consent. To do so, visit the profile of a relative of yours in the family tree and click the DNA tab (provided that you are the site manager).

Even without the FamilyTreeDNA raw data for the Y to compare with, the MyHeritage DNA raw data does not give much confidence regarding the accuracy of the Y chromosome interpretation as far as single allele processing goes. MyHeritage does not yet make report any results based on the Y chromosome, but they should double check this before they do.

Of those, the cM total matches changed for 3717 of them, but the largest change was only 7.9 cM with the FamilyTreeDNA raw data giving a match of 107.1 cM and the MyHeritage DNA raw data giving a match of 99.2 cM. For this extreme case person, here is the comparison:

Promethease currently contains hundreds of thousands of raw DNA files uploaded by customers who have tested with services such as Ancestry.com, 23andMe, and FamilyTreeDNA. The vast majority of Promethease customers are from the United States. As of November 1st, 2019, for existing non-European Promethease users only, the DNA data that is on Promethease will be copied to the MyHeritage website into new user accounts that will be created for them. Users who have uploaded DNA files to Promethease will retain ownership of their data (MyHeritage asserts no ownership rights over the DNA data), and manage it on the MyHeritage website in private accounts accessible only to them, and receive free value-add services, in addition to the accounts they will continue to maintain on Promethease.

The accounts that will be created on MyHeritage for Promethease users will enjoy the special benefit of receiving not only free DNA Matching for relatives, but also free Ethnicity Estimates. Currently, users who upload their raw DNA data to MyHeritage receive free DNA Matches, but do not get Ethnicity Estimates. This extra feature is accessible for a one-time unlock fee of $29 or by purchasing a site subscription. This benefit will be offered to Promethease users for free when their DNA is uploaded to MyHeritage, thereby saving them money and providing them with a free service that other users do not automatically receive. Some additional features will still require an unlock fee or a subscription, such as the Chromosome Browser. To learn about all of the benefits that will be available for free to Promethease users whose DNA kits will be uploaded to MyHeritage, read our DNA upload policy.

Non-European Promethease users who are not interested in having their DNA data and accounts copied to MyHeritage can log in to Promethease and delete their DNA data permanently before November 1st, 2019, and their DNA data and accounts will not be copied. Promethease users will also be able to delete their DNA data and accounts permanently from MyHeritage and Promethease at any point thereafter. MyHeritage will de-duplicate the DNA data so that DNA kits that have already been uploaded separately to MyHeritage by the same users will not be copied over to MyHeritage again. For new users who sign up to Promethease on or after November 1st, 2019 and upload DNA data, it will be copied to new accounts created for them on MyHeritage on an ongoing basis.

Promethease will send an email notification to all of its users in the coming week with details about the acquisition by MyHeritage and instructions regarding the potential data copy for non-European users, and instructions for opting in by European users. MyHeritage applies a strict privacy policy regarding DNA data, has never sold or licensed it to any third parties, and its privacy policy prohibits it from doing so without receiving explicit informed user consent. For as long as Promethease users have not granted such informed consent explicitly to MyHeritage, MyHeritage will never sell or license their DNA data to any third party.

If you use MyHeritage for testing your DNA and tracking your ancestry, you may need to change your password. That's the company's guidance following a data breach that exposed email addresses and encrypted passwords for more than 92 million users.

The security researcher reported finding no other data related to the company on the server where the file was found. And MyHeritage says there's been no evidence that the perpetrators have used the data in the file.

MyHeritage said it has no reason to believe that the breach compromised any of its other systems. The company notes that it stores information such as family trees and DNA data on segregated systems - separate from those that store the email addresses - that include added layers of security. The company also says it doesn't store credit card information.

Users who have questions can also contact the company's customer support team via email at privacy@myheritage.com or by phone via the toll-free number (USA) +1 888 672 2875, available around the clock.

It also makes sense to monitor the news for reports of data breaches and other cyber security incidents that may affect your personal information. You may also want to consider an identity theft protection service, such as Norton with LifeLock, that helps protect you against identity theft and works to restore your identity if you become a victim.

The security breach underscores growing concerns about the privacy of data submitted to genealogy platforms. Last month, news that investigators tracked down their suspect in the case of the Golden State Killer sparked worry about the privacy of genetic data shared with commercial sites such as MyHeritage.

Researchers at the University of Washington encoded a strand of DNA to contain malware, which allowed them to take remote control of a computer that was being used to process genetic data. And while the researchers stressed the chances of that kind of attack are minimal, they found a host of vulnerabilities in the commercial programs that are used to analyze DNA. 2351a5e196
