I've always thought the main risk associated with "draw over other apps" was that it could in theory trick you into tapping something. I'm willing to accept that risk, it represents a bold active attack and I tend think it would probably be detected pretty quickly.

How can I programmatically grant the permission in Settings -> Apps -> Draw over other apps in Android? I want to use system alert window but unable to in Android Marshmallow without forcing the user to go through the Settings app and grant the permission first.

The code has been tested in Headwind MDM project, it successfully grants "Draw over other apps" permission without any user consent to the Headwind Remote application (disclaimer: I'm the project owner of Headwind MDM and Headwind Remote), when Headwind MDM application is signed by platform keys. The code has been tested on Android 10 (LineageOS 17).

I just bought a Motorola e7i with the intention to leave it as remote device to monitor a machine. When I now wanted to install Teamviewer host and I get prompted to give teamviewer the permission to "Display over other apps". However I cannot do it. I can go to the permission page but there I only get told that this feature is turned off because it slows down the phone. I checked if any power saving options are turned on but couldn't see anything I could turn off.

I cannot complete the install as when I try to select the required "Display over other apps" is returns with "Feature not available" "This feature has been turned off because it slows down your phone"

But like you said, it instantly worked. The terminal didn't say "And it worked!" or anything, but when I checked the app's details on the device, it showed that it indeed had been granted permission to be displayed over the system alert.

On Android, it has long been possible for app windows to display over other currently-active apps to show the user content. It is probably best known when displaying Google Maps or a YouTube window while apps remain visible in the background. But other apps also make use of this feature and display notifications, as well as video and music apps playing in the foreground.

The new policy setting is enabled by default. However, since it results in security-relevant data being displayed, apps that should be allowed to display over other apps still need to be explicitly enabled on the device to use the feature. This is recommended, for example, for apps that need this permission for essential functions, such as the phonebook app, which uses the feature to warn about incoming spam calls.

Disabling apps to display over other apps can make sense as well, for example, to avoid important alerts being covered or modified by apps displayed in the foreground, or to avoid an entry, possibly a password, ending up in an area that is not intended for it.

Setting up policies for the Android kiosk mode is a particular case. Here, unlike other policy templates, by default, all apps are prohibited from displaying over other apps. This is a default setting that makes perfect sense for most kiosk use cases. Of course, you can also allow displaying over other apps in kiosk mode, but enabling this policy setting, in this case, should be carefully considered.

I'm using the beta version of the LastPass app on the Play Store with my Samsung Galaxy S10. Occasionally it'll popup in my notifications saying it needs permission to 'Appear on top' of other apps and when I tap on the notification it brings me to the settings page where I already gave it permission to 'Appear on top'. Only occassionally it gives me the notification and every time, I tap on it and it just brings me to the same page in settings where I already gave LastPass the permissions needed for Autofill. I think this is a bug with the beta version of the LastPass Android app and I don't know if it's an issue on the non-beta version.

Could you try to uninstall the LastPass app, restart your device, then reinstall the app and re-enable "Display over other apps" to see if that will resolve the issue?

NOTE: If you are an advanced or expert user, you can direct jump to Solution 4 which will work 100% in enabling display over other apps permission for any app in any Android smartphone.

Some apps such as Truecaller, App Lock, instant messaging apps require screen overlay feature as they need to appear on top of other apps and when the app detects that screen overlay feature is restricted in the phone, it displays the error message about screen overlay feature disabled or turned off.

If everything fails and your Android smartphone is blocking you from enabling display over other apps permission for an app, you can forcefully grant the required permission by connecting your phone with PC and using ADB command.

Hi,

I have a device using Android Go 11 with Malwarebytes, because of the "Go" version, the "Draw over other apps" function is disabled which means no apps can use it. However, Malwarebytes keeps saying that there is 1 critical issue that I need to enable it in "Draw over other apps" so that it can help me in case of ransomware attacks. Basically the critical issue chart is kinda annoying and sometimes it sends notification to warn me abt to solve issue. So is there anyway to remove the issue from the app? Idk if the devs have known abt this and should add some exception for the android Go versions.

What happens if you click the "hamburger" menu in the top left corner of the dashboard, then go to Settings -> Protection and uncheck the "Anti-Ransomware protection" box? If Android GO does not allow apps to draw over other apps at all, I think that should mean that you wouldn't need that particular feature, and turning it off may prevent that from being flagged as an issue.

The Display Over Other Apps option is disabled by default on some Android devices. You must select Display over other apps under Special App access under Settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced to make it active.

Not all apps have the same settings or options. Program-specific procedures may differ significantly. Using the Display Over Other programs feature may cause troubles with other apps or the operating system for specific programs.

The Display Over Other Apps feature lets apps display their content on other apps or the home screen without user knowledge, which may compromise security. Android developers and users must follow strict regulations to prevent apps from misusing their functionality.

Some apps, especially those that employ intricate graphics or animations, may not function properly when enabled by the Display Over Other Apps feature. When using this feature, some programs might also cause issues with the operating system or other apps.

I've been struggling with my purchased CCleaner for several days now, in that now my Xiaomi Poco M4 has

upgraded to MIUI 14.0.4 / Android 13 the permissions for the display over other apps does not work and is simply not available.

I've browsed to the above location and CCleaner is not visible in the Display pop-ups list; every other app is though. I've uninstalled & reinstalled

CCleaner several times, then installed it from the apk, just to check if there are any install differences, but there are no differences,

and nothing works to make "display over" etc work, to display CCleaner in the appropriate lists. There are many websites telling you

how to manually make CCleaner "display pop-up" or "Display over" work (see attached), but the above described options are simply not available

for CCleaner (see attached). CCleaner worked on MIUI 13, but I do recall having a very similar issue with that too, but I forget what fixed it,

i.e. me or an update.

this is very interesting problem I never saw before. After some search, I found this page -overlay-detected-dialog with similar problem. Please check it, I hope it helps. Seems that problem may be caused by using some other application that display something over display, but definitely not by Locus itself.

In order to open the locus app, my phone requires me to accept the draw over other apps function, but the switch won't toggle on. Here is the screen shot. The second screen shot is the notice that pops up which leads to the draw over other apps page. Does this help? ff782bc1db
