Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter is an updated port of the first Carnivores (1998),[1][2] and follows a similar format set by the first three entries in the Carnivores series. The player is allowed to choose from a variety of locations to hunt in, multiple dinosaurs, and a varied array of weapons; time of day can be changed and a number of accessories can be taken to aid the player. The game provides a mixed roster of dinosaurs alongside other creatures used to populate the maps. Whilst these additional animals can be killed (with the exception of the Brachiosaurus), they do not grant the player any points.[citation needed]

Players start out hunting herbivorous dinosaurs, which flee upon spotting the player. Carnivorous dinosaurs such as Allosaurus and Velociraptor immediately attack offensively after spotting the player but can be easily subdued. The Tyrannosaurus rex on the other hand requires a direct shot to the eyes before it can be killed. A feature exclusive to the mobile port is survival mode, which can be used to hone shot accuracy as multiple waves of dinosaurs swarm the player,[1][2] while hunt mode allows the player to select specific dinosaurs to hunt.[1] A total of 15 species are available, each having varying levels of sight, smell, and hearing to alert them of the hunter's presence. The choice of weapons is limited with only a pistol, shotgun, sniper rifle, and a crossbow. The use of a radar and a dinosaur call aids greatly in the capture of animals. In the PlayStation Portable/PlayStation 3 version of the game, the player can only choose one dinosaur at a time in each environment, while other dinosaurs appear for atmospheric purposes.[3]

Tatem Games ported its iOS version to Android and released it in the United States and Europe in June 2012.[8][9] The Android release included a basic version that was free to download, as well as bundles that could be purchased to add new dinosaurs, locations, and weapons.[9]

Riordan Frost of Slide to Play reviewed the iOS version and was critical of the difficulty and the "blocky" environments.[16] Andrew Nesvadba of AppSpy noted that the iOS version could have a limited audience appeal because of its realism, although he praised the controls and stated that for hunting fans, the game was an "amazingly detailed title that's a true must-have, but casual gamers should take more care in considering this title."[17] The A.V. Club, reviewing the iPhone version, noted that the game "lets you safely carry out" the fantasy of hunting dinosaurs in the modern era.[12]

One of the player's main objectives is to find pieces of a relic known as the Chronoscepter; there is one piece on each level. In exploring the levels the player fights various enemies such as poachers, gunmen, indigenous warriors, dinosaurs, demons, and insects.[12] Turok features 13 weapons plus the Chronoscepter,[13] ranging from a knife and bow to high tech weaponry. All weapons except the knife require ammunition, which is dropped by dead enemies or picked up in the levels.[14] Enemies and boss characters have multiple death animations depending on what body region the player shot.[13] Because items dropped by fallen enemies rapidly disappear, players must engage foes from close range.[15]

The player assumes control of Tal'Set (Turok), a Native American time-traveling warrior.[17] The mantle of Turok is passed down every generation to the eldest male. Each Turok is charged with protecting the barrier between Earth and the Lost Land,[18] a primitive world where time has no meaning.[19] The Lost Land is inhabited by a variety of creatures, from dinosaurs to aliens.[20] An evil overlord known as the Campaigner seeks an ancient artifact known as the Chronoscepter, a weapon so powerful that it was broken into pieces to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. The Campaigner plans on using a focusing array to magnify the Chronoscepter's power, destroying the barriers that separate the ages of time and rule the universe. Turok vows to find the Chronoscepter's eight pieces and prevent the Campaigner's schemes.[21]

The Nintendo 64 platform had superior processing capabilities compared to most personal computers available at the time, but also came with challenges. "The [Nintendo 64] is capable of doing a lot of stuff," Dienstbier said. "If you want to handle fancy particle lighting, and transparency effects, and you want to throw around huge amounts of math ... or geometry onscreen, it's got the processing power to do that, and yes it's a fantastic machine. However, calling it a developer's dream kinda gives you the impression that it's easy to crank out a game like Turok, and it's definitely not." While Nintendo was supportive, Iguana had to produce all its game development tools internally.[28][30] Fitting the game on its 8 MB cartridge was difficult; ultimately, Iguana had to compress everything and reduce the quality of the music to meet size requirements. Despite system constraints the developers were interested in producing the best-looking video game for the system:[28] the game used real-time lighting effects and particle systems for added realism.[18] Iguana was able to use Acclaim's state-of-the-art motion capture studio, allowing humanoid characters to move smoothly and in a convincing manner;[29] motion capture helped alleviate the problems of Iguana's limited resources and tight schedule.[26] A stuntman recorded movements for the human characters; while the developers tried to use emus and ostriches for the dinosaurs, the results were only used as reference material.[26]

It follows the same storyline as the original games, where the hunter picks a weapon, location, and dinosaur to hunt. It has fared very well with reviewers, receiving very high scores. Although basically the same as Carnivores 2, Dinosaur Hunter does feature content not found in the original PC game.

Essentially the same as Carnivores 2, Dinosaur Hunter allows the hunter to pick their location, weapon(s) and dinosaur(s) to hunt. Several things have been touched up, such as the dinosaur skins and maps. There are also some new features to allow for more interesting gameplay.

There are some new additions to the game. In later versions, the Pachycephalosaurus from Carnivores was added to the dinosaur roster, and "Ravaren's Bridge" from Carnivores Ice Age was added as a map, although the steps that allow the hunter to get on the bridge have been removed. This was presumably done because in Carnivores Ice Age, none of the animals could reach the hunter while on the bridge, which some fans would see as cheating.

A new update for the game (featuring four new dinosaurs) came out on June 20, 2012. In this update, the Photo Camera, support for more languages (including Spanish and German), and four new dinosaurs, Amargasaurus, Oviraptor, Utahraptor, and Troodon, were added. Carnotaurus and Gigantoraptor were added on April 4, 2013 for iOS and on Febuary 26, 2014, it was announced the two other new dinosaurs, Iguanodon and Coelophysis. The Coelophysis was added on April 18, 2014 and Iguanodon was added as a secret dinosaur and huntable on August 11, 2014.[4][5][6][7]

On June 11, 2012, Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter made its debut for Android platforms, free to play. Purchasing two additional hunting bundles was necessary to gain access to all of the creatures, weapons, and locations. On the hunt menu, the dinosaur icons use the colors of the iOS version dinosaurs, but in-game the dinosaurs used their original PC colors until recent updates. Latest updates have removed the need for bundles, integrating all animals within the initial download and adding more dinosaurs to the list.

From the Dinopedia: This fleet-footed dinosaur is one of the most abundant on the dinosaur planet. Gallimimus' name means "chicken mimic," and appropriately so, as this small herbivore will run away at high speeds if startled. DinoHunt Corp. warns Novice hunters to always be cautious around Gallimimus, as its colors are very similar to those of the Velociraptor, and many new hunters have perished by mistaking the sickle-clawed predators for this skittish little herbivore.

If attacked, Iguanodon will defend itself with vicious thumb-spikes or trample smaller animals underfoot. At launch, the Survive Mode was introduced, where the player must fend off waves of charging dinosaurs. For an unknown reason this mode was not added to Carnivores: Ice Age (Mobile). The PSP and PS3 versions also the exclusive Laser Rifle as a weapon. The Double Ammo equipment from Carnivores 2 was removed in the mobile port.
