The Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE), first published by Longman in 1978,[1] is an advanced learner's dictionary, providing definitions using a restricted vocabulary, helping non-native English speakers understand meanings easily. It is available in four configurations:

The dictionary is currently in its sixth edition. The premium website was revised in 2014 and 2015. It now offers over a million corpus examples (exceeding the paper version's), and includes sound files for every word, 88,000 example sentences, and various tools for study, teaching, examinations and grammar. The 9000 Most Important English Words to Learn have been highlighted via the Longman Communication 9000.

A key feature of the LDOCE is its utilization of the Longman Defining Vocabulary, a 2000-word controlled defining vocabulary used to write all of the definitions in the dictionary.[2] This defining vocabulary was developed from Michael West's General Service List of high-frequency words and their most common meanings.[3]

The controlled defining vocabulary is not only helpful to second-language learners, but has also facilitated the use of the LDOCE as a machine-readable dictionary in computational linguistics research.[4]

Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (6th edition) for advanced learners (LDOCE6), published by Pearson Education 2014, is the latest edition of this reputable dictionary for foreign learners of English. To increase its competitiveness, LDOCE6 includes new features like the Longman Communication 9000 to provide users with assistance on vocabulary acquisition, and the Grammar Guide to give information on major grammar topics and grammar notes that illustrate common grammar mistakes made by learners. This review examines whether the dictionary satisfies the needs and expectations of the users (in this case, advanced level EFL students); and if it rightly pitches at the level of their English proficiency and reference skills for ease of use and acquiring linguistic knowledge.

Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (6th edition) for advanced learners (LDOCE6), published by Pearson Education 2014, is the latest edition of this reputable dictionary for foreign learners of English. Its appearance is lauded by supporters of print dictionaries who have been witnessing the dwindling options for print with the growing domination of electronic media in all aspects of life.

The dictionary will be examined on whether it satisfies the needs and expectations of the users (in this case, advanced level EFL students); and if it rightly pitches at the level of their English proficiency and reference skills for ease of use and acquiring linguistic knowledge.

With limited knowledge of and training in dictionary use, most students, and/or parents, would make a decision based on the obvious facts and concepts they could understand. A possible criterion in the case of a student is:

Student: I focus on the numbers shown: words and examples. Is it not right to expect a new edition to have more words, especially new words, and examples than the previous? Also, I look if there are any new functions that the dictionary offers to solve my study problems.

Print errors also appear on page 2126 when the dictionary explains what Longman Communication 9000 is for. On the second column of the page, the dictionary cites the word acquire as an example (see below).

Since LDOCE5 also gives the word a W2 label, there is reason to believe that the information given in LC9000 is an error. Information on the word buy, which is shown as the synonym of acquire, is also confusing. It was labeled with two circles on page 2126 but with three in the word entry of the dictionary [see below]. As a feature under the spotlight in this new edition, such errors found in the illustration of LC9000 are very conspicuous.

This part of the review has chosen ten words from the teaching material of a third year university ESP course to students majoring in Humanities and Social Science to check if the dictionary can support its claim to provide users help with academic studies. The words chosen for examination are related to the course assessment which requires students to review academic journal articles and prepare a literature review on a certain topic. In the course, students would have to tackle the following words:

Buy the way, I found they are cheating me and other customershow can a 991MB dictionary (5th Edition) be updated to an 36.5MB(6th Edition) dictionary? and now I can not change it back!

When students ask me which dictionary they should buy, they are wondering which of the numerous dictionaries published by the leading publishing houses will benefit them the most. Naturally then, the following review was written primarily with an eye towards what would be most beneficial for the student-user. The review begins by taking a look at the printed, paperback volume of the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, New Edition, and then continues to discuss features of the CD-ROM dictionary that comes with the printed dictionary.

It is the dictionary portion of the book that will most likely attract and please student-users. The formatting, especially the aforementioned use of colors, takes the eyestrain out of using the dictionary. And, once a student understands the shorthand and format codes, browsing definitions or scanning a list of related words is also efficient.

The dictionary interface (see Figure 2 below) includes a search bar, an area for viewing entries, and windows for the Phrase Bank, Examples Bank, and the Activate Your Language tool.

In the entry display (left side of screen), the word is presented along with links to pronunciation, usage notes, word origin, verb form, and word set, but not all links are active for all entries. Other entries that include the search word are listed beneath the original entry. When a user clicks on one of these entries, the entry expands and the previously opened entry collapses to list form. All entries remain in their original order, making it simple to jump from entry to entry without losing track of any important definitions in the process. One of the convenient features of the CD-ROM dictionary is that you can double click any word anywhere in the display  even words which do not have an explicit link  and the word will be searched for with the results displayed in the pop-up window.

This exercise will encourage students to be more aware of different language register and how to use the dictionary to check their language is appropriate.
