"Diamonds" is a song recorded by Barbadian singer Rihanna for her seventh studio album, Unapologetic (2012). It was written by Sia together with its producers, Benny Blanco and Stargate. The song premiered on September 26, 2012, during the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show and was digitally released the following day as the lead single from Unapologetic. "Diamonds" is a mid-tempo pop, electronic and R&B ballad that features heavy synthesizers, orchestral sounds and electronic rhythms. The song's lyrics serve as a departure from the themes of unhealthy relationships that were on Rihanna's previous singles contrasted to the song's portrayal of lovers as "diamonds in the sky".

Stargate's Mikkel Eriksen told The New York Times that Blanco took a recorded snippet of Eriksen's singing, altered it electronically, and made it sound "dirtier".[3] He then applied timbre and used audio software to create ghostly accompaniment lines. Eriksen described Blanco's style as "unorthodox, as he almost never plays the keyboards but throws in weird samples and alters them to the right pitch to go with the song."[3] Australian singer-songwriter Sia later joined them and wrote the lyrics for "Diamonds" in 14 minutes.[1][4]

On September 12, 2012, Def Jam France announced via Twitter that Rihanna would release a new single the following week and that her seventh studio album will be released in November. However, the tweet was shortly deleted and replaced with another clarifying that more information will be given on September 13.[10] In an interview with iHeartRadio at their annual music festival in September, Rihanna confirmed "Diamonds" as her new single and said that it would first be played on American radio beginning September 26.[11] She described it as an easy-going, but optimistic song that is "happy and hippy" rather than dance-oriented and said that the song "gives me such a great feeling when I listen to it. The lyrics are very hopeful and positive, but it's about love."[11]

The single's cover artwork was revealed on September 24 and depicted Rihanna rolling diamonds in a manner suggestive of joint rolling.[12][13] On September 26, Rihanna posted the full lyrics of the song in a PDF on her official website Rihanna7.com.[14] "Diamonds" premiered the same day on the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show,[15] and on the following day, it was released as a digital download on the 7 Digital store.[16] In the United Kingdom, the song was released to 7 Digital on September 28.[17] Def Jam Recordings solicited the single to mainstream and rhythmic contemporary radio formats in the United States on October 2.[18] On November 5, it was released in Germany as a CD single, which it also contained the song's Bimbo Jones vocal remix.[19] On December 18, eight digital remixes of the single were digitally released.[20]

In a less enthusiastic critique, Jon Caramanica of The New York Times likened "Diamonds" to a James Bond movie theme song, but with "insipid lyrics".[36] Jim Farber of the New York Daily News felt that the song is not as evocative as it attempts to be and lacks the sense of mystery and engaging production found on "We Found Love".[2] Kevin Blair of the Irish Independent's, Independent Woman, was critical of the song and dismissed it as a "chugging, faintly misty-eyed, middle of the road pop song".[37] Chris Richards of The Washington Post panned the song as a "power ballad without much power".[38]

Rihanna performed "Diamonds" at the 2013 American Music Awards on November 24, 2013, during the acceptance of the Icon Award. The performance featured the singer wearing a long black dress plunged down to her navel and diamond adornments in her hair. She was joined by an orchestra that included a conductor which accompanied her as a rock band produced the beat. Kory Grow of Rolling Stone magazine labeled the performance as "stunning".[114] Additionally, out of a total sixteen performances at the ceremony, he placed Rihanna's rendition of "Diamonds" at number one writing, "she gave a performance that showed she could live up to the honor".[115] Los Angeles Times' Mikael Wood stated that during the performance Rihanna dominated the stage pointing that she looked like a young version of Grace Jones.[116] The single was included on the set list of Rihanna's joint 2014 tour with rapper Eminem, the Monster Tour.[117] Rihanna performed "Diamonds" on November 11, 2014, during the Concert for Valor held in Washington, D.C.[118] Rihanna performed the single during her concerts part of the Anti World Tour in 2016.[119]

The first single from Rihanna's seventh album is a departure from the singer's recurring theme of an unhealthy relationship, as the Barbadian songstress croons of a bright love. "Find light in the beautiful sea. I choose to be happy. You and I, you and I. We're like diamonds in the sky," she sings. When asked about the mood of the song following her performance at the iHeartRadio festival in Las Vegas, Rihanna replied, "You're not sad. You're happy and hippie. It's hopeful. It gives me a great feeling when I listen to it. The lyrics are hopeful and positive. It's about love and the gears are different than what people will expect."

Rihanna previously sung about love and diamonds when she pondered the existence of both on her 2011 hit, "We Found Love" ("Yellow diamonds in the light. And we're standing side by side. As your shadow crosses mine. What it takes to come alive").

This song is quite ironic. It's a love song however with the reference of moonshine and molly you can assume it is a dangerous relationship between addicts. The song talks about shining bright like a diamond and how beautiful both of them are, but from an outsiders point of view, it would be quite horrific and possibly abusive with illicit drugs involved.

So I rarely listen to the radio for fear of pop music and this song comes up. It was so horrible and formulaic with lyrics as empty as what passes as the positivity movement. "Shine bright like a diamond" "We're beautiful like diamonds" over and over again?

It was so bad I had to Google the lyrics to see what I got stuck listening to. This is Rihanna. I would expect better from an artist as popular as she is, even by pop standards. Then I checked out comments left on YouTube and can't believe I listened to the same song as these people. Some of these comments were left recently. "I still come back to this song!"

Was the song this bad when it first came out or did it simply not age well or am I the one with crap taste in music? Or is it that while I recognize that diamonds are shiny, I wouldn't exactly call them beautiful and therefore am unphased by the message at the core of the song?

The chorus further emphasizes the idea of resilience and connection. Comparing oneself and a loved one to diamonds in the sky symbolizes strength, rarity, and everlasting beauty. It highlights the idea that each person is unique and capable of shining brightly, just like a diamond.

This OG diamond song from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is probably quoted daily by every jeweler and diamond dealer on the planet. Introduced by actress Carol Channing on Broadway but made famous by Marilyn Monroe, this song dazzled in 1952 and has been covered in movies from Moulin Rouge to Burlesque. Its popularity continues today as a classic dripping-in-jewels Instagram caption.

I think many are wrong when interpreting this song as just a drug related song. I see this song as totally different meaning. I believe it is about universal energy bringing two people together. One person is infatuated with another...feeling instant attraction but the other person is lifeless, depressed and does not know the other one is there yet. There is a part in her video where the horse comes to another horse laying lifeless on the ground and the other once presence and energy brings the other horse to life again. Beautiful scene! So it is not just about drugs and alcohol; it is more about two people coming together and becoming inseparable with the help of "universe". And going beyond this life even after it ends here. "We are beautiful like diamonds in the sky". Sia wrote the song and her songs always have positive messages of resurrection and "second chances". This is more of a love song of one helping the other come to life and happiness together.

Only Rihanna Navy understand that diamonds refer to Rihanna with her "Gran Gran Dolly "who passed away this year, together they'll never die and be beautifull like diamonds in the sky! So stop thinking she is only speaking about smoking!

Well first of this song has little to do with Rhianna she is only voice of the song - the text really has been done by Sia (and producers).

Sia has a lot of experience with drugs like extacy LSD and alcohol. "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" - Shine bright like a diamond... Molly etc...

Backward message was so 80' but really think about this buddy - brain does NOT "understand" any backward messsages - it does not go after every 10 second and then put things and start to do time reversing - that is absurd. Thing is, you find what you seek when you listen songs backward. Yes I know there are songs where at the time musicans did put messages backward for purpose... mostly at the 80'

Someone said that lucifer was the morning star. How little can you know about your own religion sigh... didnt you already know that there was another person related into same star and he was Jesus Christ.

"19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts." - 2 peter 1:19.

If you look at the history of Christianity you will soon notice that really, Christian religion has had times it has mostly be good for people and society and times it has been bad - perhaps this is reason why Jesus told things like he is not coming with peace rather than sword etc etc. Christian religion has been Christ and anti-Christ at the same time. Christ is the morning star and Lucifer.
