I recently tried out CrashPlan on my Macbook, but I decided not to go through with that. However, now that I'm not going to be using CrashPlan after all, I can't figure out how to remove their app from my Mac.

I had this same exact problem and no amount of "uninstalling" would get this pesky application file to DELETE. I even connected this Mac in Thunderbolt Target Mode to another Mac and tried to delete it that way. No go. I was at my wit's end, almost ready for a complete system backup, wipe and re-install.

On OSX the root user is disabled for security reasons. sudo might work, but if not, you can try the following. You need to login as administrator user. On my system, the default user (rxt) is not admin. So I need to do su adminuser, after which the adminuser password is needed. This makes you administrator, but not root. Now you can become root by using sudo -i. In some situations this is different from using sudo plus rm or some other command. If you need more rights, become root by using sudo -i!

What worked for me was redownloading & reinstalling Crashplan. Then I did the option/click thing, ran the new uninstaller, and this seems to have completely removed Crashplan, including the pre-existing app that I couldn't get to move to the Trash.

I get very slow write speeds to a local disk (call it disk A), it typically writes at 1GB/hr (similar to the upload speed I get to Crashplan Central). I have another disk that is used for the same backup sets as disk A (call it disk B). Data is written to both disk and they are alternated and stored offsite when not in use. Disk A takes about 2 days to sync when I add and mount it in Unraid, disk B takes about 12-15 hours to do the same operation. I'm not sure of the write speeds of disk B, but it is substantially quicker that disk A. Both disk are 4TB, disk B is newer though, having recently replaced a faulty (clicking) drive that was the same model and batch as Disk A. The data stored on disk B is only about 10% less that the data stored on disk A. Disk A is not showing any errors on SMARTs, but I understand that the tests are not always reliable.

I keep getting emails saying my Crashplan hasn't backed up for xx days. Checking via the docker gui it clearly is.

There's an update, but this will not install. I assume it's due to this newer version not being installed (is this correct?).

TL;DR increase the limit using the tips n tweaks plugin. There's no magic number, so don't ask for one. The bigger it is, the more RAM you'll need. However, I have mine set to 2097152 (16 GB RAM, no VMs) and it works well for the number of files I"m backing up (and also Plex).

hey @jademonkee did you have to DO anything? I feel like i'm having a real similar issue. I had some system problems around the beginning of the month and now that i'm stable again, I keep seeing "Synchronizing block information" but it climbs to 100% then just starts over. It looks like i changed the memory in the RIGHT place ? a few days ago to 3072 from 2048 which had been working fine.

If you've confirmed that your max memory variable is set correctly (see earlier in the thread for the command in CrashPlan that allows you to check), then that's all I had to do to solve my problems. FWIW I'm using 4096 MB memory and backing up 3.6 TB. Most of the time the Docker only uses around 1 GB, but it may have climbed during sync and I missed it (which may be why mine was resetting), so if you can spare the memory, might as well set it high.

Crashplan help necessary. I just got the Crashplan Pro 30 day trial and installed the docker. Able to access the docker fine (most of the time) and the scan revealed about 1.6 TB of data to back up (this is accurate). Backup starts but then stops randomly and without warning or notification. When I log on to crashplan (via my account on Chrome), it shows my Unraid Server as "offline". I restart the docker, server then shows up as online and begins transferring data again. After some random period of time (generally less than an hour), it'll show up as "Offline" again. When this happens, I often cannot log into the Docker GUI either.

What causes the server to keep going offline sporadically? I didnt change any docker settings form the defaults. I just added the maximum memory to be 4GB's (something I didnt do before). Could this be the issue? It's going to take forever to upload my 1.6TB at this rate. I noticed in my logs that I keep getting things like this -- have no idea why it keeps randomly "disconnecting" from backup destination:

So I left it running all night while I slept. Looks like some progress was made but at these rates, it'll take a month to upload 1.6TB. Here is a history of the last 8.5 hrs. You can see I had a pretty good clip there (222 mbps) but outside of that, it has been a slow go.

The GUI does open in Edge but that is not my preferred browser (if I can help it). Has the container been updated to the latest version? I've checked for updates and it says the docker is up to date but I'm still getting errors updating, and I've been getting emails saying that I haven't backed up in awhile, even though it does seem I am plugging away at my initial backup (of several terabytes) still. I still have a Synology 1511+ NAS and I still think it's lovely. I recommend Synology NAS's but I recommend ones with an Intel processor as I feel the ARM versions are underpowered. I run Plex on my Synology and while I've had a few small issues, I love it also.

Since then however, Synology has upgraded it's main OS to "DSM 5.0" or greater and Java 7 can run on Synology. I've had some hassle getting my newly upgraded Synology running CrashPlan so here's a new writeup for DSM 5.0+ for 2014.

This gentleman at PCLoadLetter has prepared excellent packages that make it MUCH easier than before to get CrashPlan running on your Synology. However, his instructions assume a some technical ability and also require reading a LOT and visiting several pages within his site. It took me about an hour to really understand what was being said. Here's my simplified version of How To get CrashPlan on your Synology.

Log in to your Synology from a web browser. Mine is Go to the Control Panel, then User, then User Home and click "Enable User Home Service." This will give the future "crashplan" user a "place to live."

On your main computer (not the Synology) head over to www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk7-downloads-1880260.html and download a "tar.gz" of Java. Get the right one for your system. I have an Intel x86 so I got the "i586" package.

You need to edit the "C:\Program Files\CrashPlan\conf\ui.properties" text file and put in the IP address of your Synology. My Synology is called "SERVER" so I opened a command prompt and typed "ping server" and was told its address is 192.168.1.18. I needed to run my notepad as administrator to edit this file.

The initial backup will likely take a LONG time so be patient - like for days or weeks. I am choosing not to backup super-large files like DVD backups, 60 gig VMs and other things. My #1 concern is family photos and personal files.

I've been using CrashPlan since 2014 to back up my ReadyNAS (about 9 TBytes used out of 20 TByte capacity). It's been great. Unlimited, continuous, encrypted, versioning backups running on the ReadyNAS itself (and hence independent of any workstation running or human intervention, except for original configuration) for about $4/month! The initial backup took a couple of months, but since then in regular usage, all data added is safe within the cloud within minutes, or at most a few hours.

Sadly, as all good things must come to an end, CrashPlan just emailed me that they are transitioning out of the retail market to focus on SMBs and hence are terminating the CrashPlan for Home plan I'd been using. They recommend switching either to Carbonite or upgrading to a CrashPlan Pro plan.

The latter alternative doesn't look terrible. After an initial year of even more discounted storage (only $2.50/month!), it'll cost $10/month. That's a steep hike, but worth it to me, if there are no better alternatives. Worse, for some technical reason, they can't transfer backups larger than 5 TByte to their new system, so I'd have to do another full backup, taking months and leaving the data partially unprotected during the process. 152ee80cbc
