Costa Coffee was founded in London in 1971 by Sergio Costa as a wholesale operation supplying roasted coffee to caterers and specialist Italian coffee shops. It was acquired by Whitbread in 1995, then sold to The Coca-Cola Company in January 2019 in a deal worth $4.9 billion and has grown to 3,401 stores across 31 countries and 18,412 employees.[3] The business has 2,121 UK restaurants, over 6,000 Costa Express vending facilities and a further 1,280 outlets overseas, including 460 in China.[2][4]

Sergio Costa founded a coffee roastery in Fenchurch Street, London, in 1971, supplying local caterers. The family had moved to England from Parma, Italy, in the 1950s.[7][8] Costa branched out to selling coffee and opened their first store in Vauxhall Bridge Road, London in 1981.[9]

By 1995, the Costa Coffee chain had 41 stores in UK,[10] and was acquired by Whitbread, the UK's largest hotel and coffee shop operator, becoming a wholly owned subsidiary. In 2009, Costa opened its 1,000th store, in Cardiff. In December 2009, Costa Coffee agreed to acquire the Polish chain Coffeeheaven for 36 million, adding 79 stores in central and eastern Europe.[11]

Costa Coffee operates 2,467 outlets in the United Kingdom as of October 2019[update]. Overseas, it operates 1,413 stores in 32 countries.[2] The first Costa store outside the UK opened in the United Arab Emirates in 1999,[25] and, in September 2017, was the first coffee shop worldwide to start delivering coffee via drones.[26]

Following Whitbread's 59.5m acquisition of Coffee Nation, a chain of coffee machines, the machines were re-branded as Costa Express.[27] The company planned to expand to hospitals, universities and transport interchanges.[28] In Denmark, Costa Express machines are located in Shell stations; they had previously also been in Shell Canada.[29] In the UK, many grocery store chain SPAR petrol station stores have Costa Express machines.[30]

Schaillee began his career with the Sara Lee Group in Belgium in 1994, where he held various marketing roles. In 2000, he moved to the United States, where he was executive vice president of marketing for the coffee and tea businesses. He later became EVP of the beverages division.

Most recently, he has been a member of the executive committee at France-based Groupe SEB, which is a global market leader in cookware, small domestic appliances and professional coffee equipment, with brands that include WMF, Schaerer, All-Clad, Krups, Tefal and Rowenta.

Located in Basildon, Essex, U.K., the roastery represents an investment of $48.66 million and the location was chosen for its proximity to Tilbury Port, the place where the raw coffee beans used by Costa enter the country.

The roastery is designed to produce 45,000 tons of coffee a year, a figure that represents four times more than the roasting capacity of the previous roastery, according to Costa Coffee. A single-story production unit, the Basildon roastery was built using sustainable materials and technologies and is equipped with a rainwater harvesting system and a solar photovoltaic system.
