We encourage travelers to make a copy of their passport biographic page, U.S. visa and admission stamp or paper Form I-94, if provided, as soon as possible after their arrival in the United States. If you are a foreign citizen temporarily in the United States, and you lose your U.S. visa, you can remain for the duration of your authorized stay, as shown on your admission stamp or paper Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record. You will need a valid passport to depart the United States and to enter another country. If you were issued a paper Form I-94 and it was lost or stolen, you must get it replaced immediately. There are a number of steps you need to take as follows:

To report your visa lost or stolen, email the Consular Section at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate outside the United States which issued your visa. Go to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate website to locate the email address and contact information. Be sure to include your full name, date of birth, place of birth, address in the United States, and an e-mail address (if available). Specifically state whether the visa was lost or stolen. If you have a copy of the passport or visa, scan and email this to the embassy or consulate. Otherwise, if known, report the category of visa, and the passport number from the lost/stolen visa.

Lost or stolen U.S. visas cannot be replaced in the United States. For replacement of a visa, you must apply in person at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad. When applying for the replacement of a visa, you will need to provide a written account documenting the loss of your passport and visa. Include a copy of the police report.

Students, Scholars, and Dependents entering the U.S. are given proof of legal non-immigrant status at the Port of Entry by a Customs and Border Protection Officer. For those entering at an airport, proof of status is a stamp and notation in the passport. The hand-written notation should indicate your status (F-1, J-1, F-2, J-2) and your duration of stay D/S. You should print a paper copy of your Most Recent Form I-94 to document your status at Please select Most Recent I-94, not Travel History. The International Center cannot use Travel History when needing to verify the Most Recent I-94. Those entering the U.S. at a land border will receive a small white I-94 card with the same notations. Prepare a copy of this I-94 card.

You can download, save, and print a copy of your I-94 on the CBP website. Whenever you enter the US, you should save a copy of your I-94 for your records and verify that all information is accurate. If there are errors, let us know so we can help get them corrected.

They may also be required to present a copy of your H-1B petition documents, their birth certificates (with certified translation, if applicable), marriage certificate, and copies of your financial documents such as pay stubs from your current employer. * You do not need to present your original I-797 approval notice when you apply for entry into the U.S. The receipt number on your visa stamp is sufficient for officials at the port of entry to look up your petition approval in the system. This number typically begins with LIN, SRC, EAC, WAC, or IOE. We recommend traveling with a copy of the I-129 (I-797A) approval notice, especially if you intend to request a consulate-issued visa. The original I-129 petition is no longer needed by US consulates because hand-delivered copies are not considered to be secure documents. USCIS provides a copy of the I-129 petition directly to US consulates. Please also follow any specific instructions on the consular website about additional documents to bring to the interview.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) use an automated I-94 (record of admission) process. An electronic copy of your I-94 will be available online at www.cbp.gov/I94 after your arrival to the U.S.

Travelers should obtain a hard copy I-94 from a new CBP web portal, www.cbp.gov/I94. According to CBP, the website should have the information available immediately upon entry and will be the functional equivalent of the current paper I-94 card containing the same information. The traveler will be required to enter certain information from his or her passport in order to access the electronic I-94.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will continue to require applicants to submit a paper copy of Form I-94 when requesting certain benefits, even if individuals did not receive one upon entry. Other governmental agencies, such as state departments of motor vehicles (DMVs) and the Social Security Administration, will also require a paper copy of the I-94 to verify whether a foreign national is entitled to certain benefits. Currently, foreign nationals authorized to work are recommended to wait approximately 10 days after entry to apply for a Social Security card. With this automated system, the information should be transferred to other agencies almost immediately, allowing foreign nationals to apply within two to three days.

According to CBP, nonimmigrants who are authorized to work may present a paper copy of Form I-94 along with an unexpired passport to their employers during the employment eligibility verification (Form I-9) and E-Verify processes. However, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the U.S. Department of Homeland Security agency that oversees I-9 compliance, has not yet issued a directive regarding the automated I-94 system.

ISSO makes a copy of the student's passport, visa, and I-94 card during orientation check-in. ISSO does not make copies of new passports, new visas, or new I-94 cards for continuing students. It is good practice for students to make copies of current immigration documents in case the original documents are lost, stolen, or damaged.

The interim final rule will become effective on April 26, 2013, at which time nonimmigrants traveling to the United States by air or sea will no longer need to fill out a paper Form I-94. However, individuals who go through secondary inspection, such as asylees, refugees and parolees, will be provided a paper copy of Form I-94 by a CBP officer.

Despite these changes by CBP, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will continue to require applicants to submit a paper copy of Form I-94 when requesting certain benefits. Other government agencies, such as state Departments of Motor Vehicles, also require a paper copy of Form I-94. Moreover, nonimmigrants who are authorized to work may present a paper copy of Form I-94 to their employers during the employment eligibility verification (Form I-9) process. ff782bc1db
