30 year tech pro here, who used to write technical documentation for elementary school teachers.

I have a legacy logic board and my windows drive has no UEFI partition. So I wished to run Clover with my Windows 7 Pro version and eventually do an OSX Snow Leopard install on yet another SSD.

I followed your directions exactly and installed Clover on both a USB stick and an internal Fat32 formatted drives.

Each time, your Legacy installer confirmed a successful installation. However I was never able to boot from either drive into Clover, no matter what I tried in settings. If you read the comments that have been made here, you must realize that your instructions above need to be completely rewritten. When creating this kind of documentation, one must never assume another persons level of knowledge. This is the biggest problem experienced most by inexperienced technical writers. They assume far too much regarding their audience. You should try watching a non-technical person follow your instructions and see where and why they fail. Then, you really need to carefully read what you have written above and completely rewrite it.

Maybe start with an explanation of the differences between UEFI and Legacy Bios and what these terms actually mean.

Also, how the user can perhaps understand which type of hardware they are dealing with.

 Have a nice day.

I think the clover legacy installer.exe file is a trojan. My computer scanned the file and it detected a trojan inside the file. Specifically, it went into win32 and tried to grab some of my stuff on chrome. It also said it got into a .A file.

Also, the reason the guide has you boot the installation media with clover is that it puts it into efi mode, which will allow it to boot properly when it is installed. If you just install it in bios mode it will not boot properly when you try and use clover.

Clover is a little bit fussy about usb drive boot configuration I find I generally have more success with usbs made with the creation tool over those made with Rufus. In saying that alot of users here have reported success simply by switching to a different brand usb stick for the windows install. It seems clover prefers certain usb types over others maybe its a driver or usb controller thing ?

My PC currently has Windows 10 and Mac installed on separate hard drives with Clover bootloader managing the boot process. I've recently purchased a third hard drive to install Ubuntu onto it; however, I'm unsure what the best way is to proceed considering tutorials and threads for dual boot systems are far more common than triple boot systems with my configuration.

I was considering unplugging all my other drives (Windows and Mac) and doing a "standard" install of Ubuntu, which would not affect my other drives; however, given my elementary knowledge of bootloaders etc. I wasn't sure if Clover would be able to detect the drive after I reconnected the other two drives once installation of Ubuntu was complete. Note I'm flexible on using Clover to boot if there's a superior and easier method.

Hey Hamish,

Thanks for the wonderful guide. I am currently stuck on the step of adding the .efi driver to the USB. Once I use Rufus to install the image of refind on my USB my windows 10 no longer recognizes the USB stick.

Hi- the title and contents of this post suggest that you are using rEFInd, yet the file paths you give are for the Clover bootloader, and the .img file seems to only contain Clover bootloader-related files. Am I crazy, or does this not have anything to do with rEFInd?

Dear sir,

I have Linux loaded on a M2 and in adapter in PCIe slot. When clover boot screen comes up, I see see a picture of a hard drive and Boot Linux from Whole Disk Boot. The hard drive is highlighted and I push enter and the screen flashes and nothing happens. The Linux drive will work from a USB M2 holder.Appreciate any help, Dennis

Would love to boot from my NVME SSD. I used AOMEI Back Upper to disk clone my sata SSD to my new NVME SSD. Last month I used AOMEI Back Upper to disk clone my windows 10 mechanical sata drive to my sata SSD. Been using the sata SSD about a month. I love the zippiness of the sata SSD & hope to get further improvement by making the new NVME SSD my bootable drive.

How to easily hide unwanted partitions in clover's boot menu without having to create the custom entries:

You can use clover configurator to easily hide the partitions that you don't what to see on your clover's boot menu.

1. Open your config.plist with clover configurator and select GUI.

2. On the top right corner you'll see a box called "Hide Volume", all you have to do is to click on the + sign to add a new entry. The entry you add must be exactly the same as the name of the partition that you want to hide. For example if you want to hide the recovery partition of your macOS you need to add "Recovery HD" and save the config. By adding this entry the "Recovery HD" will be hidden on clover's boot menu, remember if you have more than one version of macOS installed on you hackintosh all recovery partitions will be hidden.

Cheers.

Clover is a free and open source EFI bootloader which allows you to multi-boot Windows, Mac OS X and Linux on UEFI based computer, it can auto-detect all installed operating systems on the computer and displayed in the form of GUI menu for you to choose the operating system you want to start.

As an EFI bootloader, Clover must be installed to the EFI System Partition (ESP). In earlier versions of Windows 10 and Windows 8/7, we can use diskpart to assign a drive letter to ESP and then manually copy Clover to that partition. In the newer version of Windows 10, we cannot copy Clover to the ESP partition even if we have used diskpart to assign a drive letter to the partition. When we try to access an ESP partition that has been assigned a drive letter with diskpart, we will get the "You don't currently have permission to access this folder." error.

I used El Capitan for few months alongside windows 10 installation with Clover bootloader. Everything is working fine but I don't need OSX anymore and I was looking for an instruction to safely remove the Hackintosh (El Capitan) and Clover boot loader.

It's not really a Hackintosh matter. Just remove the partitions from Windows, using the DiskManager tool. You'll then be able to reformat the recovered disk space to NTFS or even extend your windows partition if it's the 1st one on disk (I mean before the OS X partition). Once you remove the EFI partition, you'll probably find you'll have to re-instate your MBR, so be ready to boot from your Windows installation media to repair this.

the 2GB are not enough to install Windows so we are looking for a way to put an EFI Windows bootloader on the 2GB storage and then make the bootloader point to the SATA drive to continue booting Windows.

Thank you both for your help but I'm afraid that I can't find a way to use either method to achieve what I asked in the OP.

The "clover" iso when ran, simply loads the server's stock BIOS. I can't find any method to use it to create/copy a bootloader.

Granted, I couldn't find any kind of instructions on how to use it so it could simply be that.

The Windows installer method seemed promising but from the commands posted I think I'm missing something because I can't see a way to install the bootloader on the 2GB drive except to run the dism command and, obviously I can't do that on that drive.

Any further instructions/directions would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, but what then?

When I load the clover ISO it simply boots me to the BIOS.

I don't see a way to make it load a different hard drive.

Am I doing something wrong?

Are there instructions on how to use it?

I made this for my own use but others might find it useful. Basically it's Clover with apple_set_os.efi feature included so you can boot directly into windows with the error 12 fix + iGPU enabled. Follow Mikeal's guide along with the attached Clover build. The included config.plist is set to boot automatically (no delay/GUI) a partition named "EFI" (Windows' default name). What I did is just place the dsdt.aml file into Windows' EFI partition on my external HDD so it boots directly. I've submitted a pull-request to clover so hopefully this will make it into the mainline.

I wanted to alert you about a detractor in using apple_set_os.efi. We've had several reports that booting via apple_set_os.efi results in a lowered CUDA-Z/AIDA64 host-to-device result in Windows. See report at -setup/how-to-keep-mbps-irisiris-pro-activated-when-booting-into-windows-boot-camp/paged/6/#post-22513

Interesting, I didn't know about the reduced performance. If I have to guess I would say this doesn't solve that problem as it runs the same code as apple_set_os.efi. The only thing this does is hide the boot menu so you can select your windows EFI partition and boot directly into windows quickly. I don't have an internal bootcamp setup so I can't test hot plugging.

Quick question: Does using the clover bootloader via a USB drive (apple_set_os.efi instructions) on a real mac come with the possibility of bricking the system (the mac firmware)? If yes, then is there a guaranteed non-brickable solution to use this bootloader? Note that I do not want to do a DSDT override. I do not have any understanding of the system at such a privilege level and how its associated with mac firmware, so apologies for the lack of context here.

As always it all revolves about which bootmanager/bootloader you want to be the "primary" one, with grub4dos (and now with the added grub4uefi or whatever it is called) as well as with GRUB2 (though IMHO with some added complexity) once you are in the bootmanager you can chainload *everything* or *nearly everything*, whilst the same cannot be said about other bootmanagers, surely if you want to simply boot a given OS that is supported/works fine with Clover, and in a setup that is compatible, you don' t need anything else. ff782bc1db
