Online-only files take up a small amount of space on your hard drive as the placeholder requires space to store the file name and the shortcut to dropbox.com. Still, this takes up much less space than the file itself would.

I recently downloaded dropbox to personal computer and am in the process of syncing files to this local hard drive. However, after linking my account and setting a few folders to not sync via "select sync", the syncing stopped (I now have a full green check on my desktop icon). When I go into my local dropbox folder (on my computer), all the folders and files have a small cloud icon on them suggesting that they are available (but only when I'm online). How do I change the settings to have these files accessible on my local hard drive even when not online?... To be clear, I'm hoping to have access not to the unselected files in the selective sync option... Rather, I'm tryign to have offline access to the files which WERE selected in the selective sync process.

This really angers me. When I got the new version of dropbox, I selected not to enable smart sync. Later, when I noticed that I had to download files to access them I went back and checked the setting, which was set to "off" but with new content not set to "local". That pisses me off. Also lots of content that was very old (was not new) was synced to cloud. I don't understand how that setting was so screwed up and how so much of my content was not on my hard drive. I certainly hope if I had uninstalled dropbox that I would not have unknowingly lost all those files. I'm now working on transfering over to Microsoft One Drive as a result of this "feature" which had a forced implementation.

I've done a bit of research and I understand the reason for the change. However, I'm deeply troubled by the implication that on-demand cloud storage is the "new normal" for these files, and that offline storage seems to be a less preferable option.

Selecting "Make Files Local" apparently forces Dropbox to use its classic behavior: all folders selected in Selective Sync are stored locally, as well as in the cloud. Select "Make Files Online-Only" prompts the new (toxic) behavior where Dropbox decides which files to store locally and which to store only on Dropbox, where the user has the option of specifying the behavior on a per-file basis.

These Dropbox changes are horrific and nothing is working as expected for me. It's impossible to know whether files are local or on the cloud, since many are displaying BOTH a green checkmark AND a cloud icon. The contextual commands to make a folder "Online Only" or "Available Offline" don't reliably do anything. It's simply unacceptable.

One additional datapoint is that in my case i'm using an alternative file-browser (not Mac's finder). This file-browser (Path Finder) does not have an indication of the file's status (cloud or local), so i usually rely on a "common" setting that ensures all my files are stored locally (then i enable or disable sync for each individual folder in the advanced tab). This has always worked, but not after upgrading my mac OS all the sudden my files start living in the cloud, and are no longer available locally. This move made me loose my face a number of times while traveling in Japan on low bandwidth, and I don't find a way to restore my files to reside locally. My Mac locks while trying to load data that i thought was local, but is now all the sudden offlined for some random reason. Please explain to me how i can keep my files locally, and give me back my control or i will cancel my subscription.

Dropbox today announced a partnership with Google Cloud to deliver a more unified home for work. Working with Google Cloud, Dropbox plans to develop a series of cross-platform integrations that connect G Suite cloud productivity tools and content (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Hangouts) with its global collaboration platform. These integrations will be made accessible for all Dropbox users. As a result:

Does WD My Cloud work like dropbox? I would like to sync a folder in real time between different computers. I thought if WD My Cloud works like dropbox, then it would be cheaper to buy it rather than using dropbox, googl drive, or onedrive.

NAS devices act as network folders that can be accessed from any device connected to the specific network and, with the proper settings, can be accessed over the Internet, just like the online cloud services you mentioned. A NAS is basically pretty much any storage device connected to a network through a router that can be accessed over that network from another device. A simple example would be a basic external storage drive or a thumb drive connected to your router's USB port that can be accessed through your phone for data transfer from and to it over the internal Wi-Fi.

Pretty much. For your purposes anyway. I think of it as a secondary iCloud. There are some slight differences in terms of niche features, but the core product is essentially the same as most client-server cloud storage and synchronization services.

I can see a bunch of notes at joplincloud.com, that's good.

I can sync the notes to my laptop from joplincloud.com using the command line client. that's good.

There are missing notes from the last month. that's bad.

I want to report that I have resolved the issues, by creating a new dropbox account which is dedicated to my joplin notes, and syncing that with the joplin app on my old device. I then deleted the ~/.config/joplin* data directories (which were not easy to find), and re-synced the node and desktop clients from the new dropbox account.

We've compiled a guide to the most popular cloud storage services: how they work, their strengths and their weaknesses. We've even included some lesser-known services if you want to get away from the mainstream. To be clear, we have not tested these services -- this is an overview and some analysis of some of the top options in the market.

Bottom Line

Apple iCloud is an easy cloud storage service for Apple users to check out because it's already native to the device. Upgrading from the basic tier is easy and Apple thankfully doesn't tuck away useful features behind the highest-priced plan.

Another option for cloud storage is pCloud. The service offers annual and lifetime plans for individuals, families and businesses. PCloud doesn't limit file sizes and doesn't throttle your upload or download speeds. While your pCloud files are securely stored on the company's servers, you can add an extra layer of protection by purchasing pCloud Crypto. PCloud Crypto provides client-side encryption where the encrypted version of your files are stored on pCloud servers, but the plain-text files stay on your computer. With your Crypto Pass code, you can encrypt or decrypt your files.

Cloud: This refers to software and services that are stored on the internet, instead of locally on your computer or phone. The cloud allows you to access your files anywhere with an internet connection.

Data center: Even though your files are stored in the cloud, there is still physical hardware involved. The company that you've purchased cloud storage from -- like Google or Apple -- will have actual servers where customer information lives.

Instead of having to remember a thumb drive, or emailing items to yourself, cloud storage lets you access your files, documents and photos on demand. If your computer or phone crashes, you don't have to worry about losing your content, because those files are stored on a separate server. Cloud storage can be a convenient option because options like Google One, iCloud and OneDrive are built into services many use on a daily basis. Cloud storage also lets you keep your device's local storage freed up.

According to Norton, cloud storage is a safe option for users because the on-site servers are usually located in warehouses that few employees have access to. In addition, the files stored on the servers are encrypted, adding another layer of security.

No type of digital storage is risk-free, but cloud storage services also offer more immediate security features like two-factor authentication and security checkups. Privacy and security features may vary between services.

I have installed the Portable Keepass in my Dropbox, which allows access from my desktops & netbooks & keeps all changes synchronised. Access to the database is by a 10-character password (uppercase, lowercase, numeral, special). Whilst this is a vast improvement on my old password protected Excel file, is this a major security risk. As more people are encouraged to store on the cloud, I'm sure there is a great interest in this subject.

A technique useful for keeping the Master Password to a reasonable level of complexity in a cloud based KeePass database is to implement a key file stored at the end nodes in a local directory but that is never stored in the cloud.

For many other companies, however, leaving the public cloud altogether may provide much less benefit to the customer. Instead, companies may benefit from cherry-picking services to bring in-house, as developing them can take significant time and money that may not be worth the risk. For instance, Netflix relies heavily on AWS, but it has developed its own infrastructure that is used specifically to zip the content faster when a customer selects a title, improving that specific, but crucial, part of the product.

Reduce the time, complexity, and costs of cloud migrations and improve the accuracy of your planning with the BMC Helix Cloud Migration Simulator, which lets you compare the costs and resource requirements of leading service providers to evaluate and right-size workload migrations.

I'd be leery of cloud solutions when it comes to CAD data, most projects consist of multiple files, all of these integrated functions I don't care for, they get their hooks in and if the hooks are compromised, your data goes with it. (previously worked system utilizing Catia), data was maintained in house and backed up off site (and locally), but total file foot print was north of 30TB, cloud was not piratical.
