The word clich is borrowed from French, where it is a past passive participle of clicher, 'to click', used as a noun; clich is attested from 1825 and originated in the printing trades.[9] The term clich was adopted as printers' jargon to refer to a stereotype, electrotype, cast plate or block print that could reproduce type or images repeatedly.[10][9] It has been suggested that the word originated from the clicking sound in "dabbed" printing (a particular form of stereotyping in which the block was impressed into a bath of molten type-metal to form a matrix). Through this onomatopoeia, clich came to mean a ready-made, oft-repeated phrase.[11]

Throughout high school, I defied cliches at every turn. I played varsity basketball, but I was also a soft-spoken academic who liked to write for the school paper. I took German because everybody else took Spanish. I grew up overseas. I picked a university that was far-flung from the typical southeast-Michigan lineup, and I reveled in telling my classmates that I was destined for Southern California.

Of course, there are also Pepperdine-specific cliches such as being overcommitted and having Jesus on speed-dial. Like every other Pepperdine undergraduate, I play guitar. I have a MacBook. These are cliches that are mostly positive, but because everybody does them, there is supposedly shame in them.

Cliche photos are not a bad thing. It was probably that cliche photo that actually attracted you to that famous park or country in the first place. They inspire us to visit new locations, and give us a baseline of what has been done. So while cliche images may get a bad reputation, I see them as a starting point to creating my own images in the same area.

When an artist takes on the job of painting something that has been portrayed over and over in a trite or hackneyed way, it is imperative that the painting qualify as an original voice. This painting presented a challenge because of its subject matter. My aim was to portray a memory of our mother taking my siblings and I fishing in a small pond near our home, including the perpetual company of the resident dragonflies, without resorting to cliche. I hope that it has a feeling of joy and activity, and a presence that is unique.

When I search the internet for dragonfly images, the first image that caught my eye is the image below by Joan Miro. I doubt that anyone would describe it as trite or cliche. His surreal interpretation is immediately recognizable as a Miro.

It was a good learning experience. Because, as cliche as it is, it really is important to hike your own hike. I promised myself after that night that I would continue to do so. I realized that too often along the first third of this journey I did too many things for the group and not for myself.

Pick up a magazine or go to a random website and find a cliche. Now, come up with an alternative word or phrase that could be put in its place. Does it create more impact? If you were reading along and came across it for the first time, would it jump out at or surprise you? If yes, point made. If no, try again.

The English language started developing around the 13th century. Over many, many years, cliches and idioms have been coined and incorporated into everyday language. Cliches and idioms are generally only recognized by those fluent in a language. e24fc04721
