These notes provide an introduction to the fun bits of quantum field theory, in particular those topics relatedto topology and strong coupling. They are aimed at beginning graduate students and assumea familiarity with the path integral.

The theory of quantum information and quantum computation. Overview ofclassical information theory, compression of quantum information, transmissionof quantum information through noisy channels, quantum entanglement, quantumcryptography. Overview of classical complexity theory, quantum complexity,efficient quantum algorithms, quantum error-correcting codes, fault-tolerantquantum computation, physical implementations of quantum computation.

Certainly it would be useful to have had a previous course on quantummechanics, though this may not be essential. It would also be useful to knowsomething about (classical) information theory, (classical)coding theory, and (classical) complexity theory, since a central goal ofthe course will be generalize these topics to apply to quantum information.But we will review this material when we get to it, so you don't need to worry ifyou haven't seen it before. In the discussion of quantum coding, we will usesome rudimentary group theory.

In fact, quantum information -- information storedin the quantum state of a physical system -- has weird properties that contrastsharply with the familiar properties of "classical" information. Anda quantum computer -- a new type of machine that exploits the quantumproperties of information -- could perform certain types of calculations farmore efficiently than any foreseeable classical computer.

In this course, we will study the properties that distinguish quantuminformation from classical information. And we will see how these propertiescan be exploited in the design of quantum algorithms that solve certainproblems faster than classical algorithms can.

I was sitting at my desk and I was about to start my revision. I'd made up a revision timetable in different coloured pens and started the process of writing my revision notes. I took out my class notes and they were a mess.

Pages and pages of calculations to problems I'd attempted to solve in class. Random pages of random notes that I really couldn't assign to any particular topic. Some of my physics notes were hidden in my french folder.

THEN I started writing revision notes for the exam. So I got my different coloured pens and started crafting the most beautiful revision notes I'd ever seen. It took me two hours to cover about three pages in the textbook. The irony was I already knew the stuff I'd just written revision notes on. Why had I just spent two hours writing out stuff that I already knew?

There was a person in my class who was a know-it-all. Always getting top marks and fancied themselves as the next Einstein. He boasted that he condensed the whole course down to 2 sides of A4 paper and I literally had no idea why or how you would do that;!?

By condensing my class notes down to two sides of A4, I removed a whole lot of clutter and unnecessary information from my mind. I was able to focus EXACTLY on what I needed to know for class tests and exams.

I have been watching Frederic Schuller's video lectures on YouTube, the geometric anatomy and quantum theory courses, and I have been taking some (often fairly detailed) lecture notes. I thought I would share them here in case anyone is interested.

I am aware that there is demand for the problem sheets for both courses, but apparently there is no way of getting a hold of them. If you would like to propose your favourite exercises (possibly with solutions), we could use them to complement the notes.

AP Physics is a course designed to provide a systematic introduction to the main principles of Physics. It will help students gain a conceptual understanding of different subject matter as well as develop problem solving skills using Algebra and Trigonometry. Most colleges treat Physics as a full year course, so the course load might be more extensive than other AP classes. Students in other majors may use an AP Physics course to bypass taking other science classes while enrolled in college. Before taking an AP Physics class, students should have a firm grasp of mathematical terms and functions. It is recommended that students take at least one Algebra class and have some experience dealing with trigonometry.

Students considering taking AP Economics or any other AP course should recognize that taking an advanced college course will require more time and effort than the average high school class. Students that are willing to put in the proper amount of effort into their classes, however, will see a definite payoff in their GPA, exam scores, and preparedness for college. Not only do Advanced Placement courses look excellent on high school transcripts, they will also help student to develop strong study skills and time management habits.

While we strive to provide the most comprehensive notes for as many high school textbooks as possible, there are certainly going to be some that we miss. The patience of my readers is further tested by my tendency to digress, to "turn over rocks" as I encounter them, to see if anything interesting lurks under. And by the fact that too frequently my notebooks simply stop, without having been brought to a definitive conclusion...this sometimes because I acquired greater interest in some other subject, but more often because my attention was preempted by fresh classroom obligations.

When thinking through a subject in preparation for a class I have no option but to write my way through the subject, and then to lecture from my own notes. I find it much more pleasant and productive to spend an afternoon and evening writing than arguing with the absent author of a published text. And easy to entertain the delusion that what I have written is superior to the text. Inevitably it is at any rate different from any of the candidate textbooks, embodies organizational principles, analytical techniques and points of view that I prepared to "profess" (my responsibility as a professor) rather than simply to regurgitate/parrot. I suppose it is for that same set of reasons that many/most teachers of physics/mathematics (including all of those who influenced me most profoundly) prefer to work from notes.
