The melodic and, in the case of the solo piano music, timbral materials from which Christian Wolff's (b 1934) music is made are rarely unusual; these are ordinary, everyday things. However, Wolff's rhythmic invention is of great range and variety: complex polyrhythms, speech-like-rhythms, the music flowing at a freely fluctuating rate or proceeding in a plain, straightforward manner, silences. This mix of unusual and ordinary results in a music unlike any other. And, in a piece of such length as Long Piano, the ongoing appearance and accumulation of a great number and variety of short passages results in the constant renewing and refreshing of the listener's perception. This is the world-premiere recording of the composer's largest solo keyboard work to date.

With our long-standing reputation as a strong piano school, TCU offers a wide-ranging program to students of varying abilities. Piano majors study with an internationally known faculty of artists/teachers through a variety of program options. In addition to performance, studies in piano pedagogy and collaborative piano are offered at all levels of study. Non-majors can pursue piano study through group piano offerings and private study.

In addition to studying at a first-class university, our piano students perform in weekly piano division recitals, master classes with world-renowned artists, an annual competition for an opportunity to play a concerto with the TCU Symphony Orchestra, as well as a variety of chamber music ensembles. Students participate in outreach opportunities, enriching the lives of those in local schools and the community.

Many of our piano majors go on to successful careers in music. Undergraduates are prepared for graduate study at the school of their choice. DMA graduates enter the professional world as educators. Our Artist Diploma students become prizewinners in major competitions and build successful careers as performers.

Nielsen is an anachronism, and that in itself makes his music interesting. In his music traditional tonality has to accommodate modern structures, while agitated musical phrases must fit into a harmonic framework and structural fabric that may be constricting. All this energizes the music in all sorts of directions. Any attempt to categorize these factors would be unhelpful, as well as being something Nielsen would have disapproved of. Had he subscribed to a single neat aesthetic model we could perhaps have found something cogent to say about it. But he evades any such commentary because he is himself always looking for something new. He is like a sniffer dog perpetually smelling out new musical possibilities. Nor did he have any regular compositional method. He just began at the beginning and felt his way forward. "We have no idea where we will end up," he used to say.

Nielsen's music, being so personal, is full of original features that will delight new listeners. Today, with so many well-worn musical paths, it is his ability to surprise and take us in unexpected directions that is exciting and valuable. Nielsen's originality will always be there. No one else has written quite like him, and no one will do so again. May his music live on! - Christian Eggen 2015

I have a strong personal bond with this particular recording. I still remember the intensity of Christian's playing. There was a degree of concentration where the instrumental and musical development from take to take was evident in Christian's every movement and in his physical contact with the instrument. For me, a young sound engineer at the time, it was an experience that set a benchmark for later work in music production.

This was one of my first productions after completing my education as a sound engineer. The set-up was extremely simple and straightforward: a stereo pair of Brel & Kjr omnidirectional microphones recorded direct onto a DAT player. A brand new Steinway D-model had just arrived from the factory in Hamburg to the old Oslo University Hall. A few months later this particular piano was sold to a theatre, where it was unfortunately badly serviced and ended up a virtual ruin. Perhaps it is this very element of irretrievability that makes the recording of this instrument so special, but I should add that I have never, in all the years since, come across a piano with such a strong sonic personality. - Morten Lindberg, 2015

Using MQA this recording is a total revelation! You can clearly hear the instrument timbre, the room, the piano action, Christian's technique, and - the point of it all - we get lost in the music. You'll hear an incredible sense of space and clarity in this recording. So we think it's very exciting, because it's being brought back, authentically, through the lens of the original equipment. - Bob Stuart, 2015

While getting a world-class education, our piano students perform in weekly piano division recitals, master classes with world-renowned artists, an annual competition for an opportunity to play a concerto with the TCU Symphony Orchestra, as well as a variety of chamber music ensembles. However, if you just want to play tunes and have fun, the good news is that there are tons of beginner-friendly gospel arrangements out there. And if you want to get fancy, all you need is a lead sheet to create your own arrangement. Here are some places to get sheet music, lead sheets, and chord charts for free or at an affordable price:

I began with the cross, and now return to it. Sir James MacMillan may be the most theologically profound Christian composer alive. He manages to give voice to a vibrant hope, but never descends into sentimentality, never allows us to forget that God heals the world by descending into its darkest depths. In seven short movements, the last words of Christ are set to music in a way that is both profoundly true to the Gospels, and disturbingly fresh. Among other things, we are reminded how silence can become the very substance of music. In the last piece, we hear an evocation of Jesus actually dying, taking his last breaths. If you ever need to be convinced of the theological power of music, you could hardly do better than begin here.

Jeremy Begbie (PhD, University of Aberdeen) is the Thomas A. Langford distinguished professor of theology at Duke Divinity School. He teaches systematic theology and specializes in the interface between theology and the arts. His particular research interests are in the interplay between music and theology. He is an ordained minister of the Church of England and a professionally trained musician.

Where can I go from here? HCU Bachelor of Music majors have gone on to successful performing and conducting careers. They teach at universities and colleges, maintain private studios and/or pursue advanced degrees in graduate school. Graduates are also teaching in public and private schools as band directors and choir directors, and are serving as ministers of music and worship leaders in churches.

The Organ Performance degree is designed to train organists for music ministry. With hundreds of churches in the Houston area, students have many opportunities to observe and serve as assistants to area organists, and when their proficiency allows, work as church organists. Courses such as Service Playing and Organ Construction and Design help students prepare for a lifetime of music ministry. The study of improvisation aids the church organist in providing inspiring accompaniment for congregational song. Organ majors learn to perform the great organ masterworks. Whether playing a complex Bach Prelude and Fugue or a lovely Mendelssohn sonata, student recitals captivate audiences. Applied lessons with the organ professor provide the technical skills for building repertoire and bring together classroom concepts and musicianship. Organ Pedagogy helps to prepare the student to teach others. Thus, future generations of organists will be trained in the art of organ performance and service playing.

I am looking for the (Classical?) piano song the girl (Lea Marquis - played by Lucy Boynton) plays at around 1h and 20minutes into the movie "The Pale Blue Eye" that is available on Netflix. -Sadly I can not find it elsewhere.

This is when Christian Bale (the detective) has dinner with the family of the doctor, the wife slams down her plate and a bit later the doctor invites Christian Bale into the study. The piano song will start into the background, and grow louder as the son invites them to listen to the woman playing.
