The 2023 approved racing program was created with input from our participants during Thoroughbred Breed Development Advisory Committee meetings. These meetings are open to the public and streamed live on the Indiana Thoroughbred Breed Development Facebook page.

The breeder of a registered Indiana Bred which wins a race in another state, Puerto Rico or Canada earns 10% of the winners share of the purse for any race, except when entered for a claiming price of less than $10,000. Each out-of-state award is capped at $10,000. You are eligible for an out-of-state award when there is no live Thoroughbred race meet in progress in Indiana (except for stakes races), and for 2-year-olds winning out of state prior to July 1 of race meet.

*All breeder and stallion awards will be paid directly to the winning breeder or stallion owner from the Indiana Thoroughbred Breed Development Program. Awards will not be paid through the purse account at the track.

2. The mare may enter the state or submit an application after November 1 of the year prior to foaling and remain in the state until foaling. The mare must be registered no later than 10 days after foaling and be bred back to an Indiana Sire. The mare and foal must remain in the state 30 days past foaling.

Thoroughbred stallions must be registered by October 15 of the year prior to breeding to be an Indiana Sire. Returning stallions registered after November 1 incur a $250 late fee. Stallions must remain in the state from February 1 to July 1 and may not cover mares outside the state in the registered year. Stallions must be registered prior to covering any mares. Stallion applications must be submitted each breeding year.

Was around when Impressive was at his peak as a sire, they were actually quite athletic beside very correct. Not all direct offspring were beef burgers. Likewise other Halter lines produce various types with various skill sets depending on how the genetics of both parents combine. Where you get into trouble is extremely heavy bodied, tiny footed Halter only horses that never work under saddle getting bred to other Halter specialists, often very closely related and breeding out the traits that allow good performance under saddle.

We have a halter-bred, halter-type QH. He is croup-high, very low-necked, good bone, but small clubby hooves and while not an extreme post-legged horse, has a straighter stifle/hock ratio than I would prefer. He was not a superstar halter horse, which in retrospect is a good thing because he has mostly-working parts.

Puppies bred by Bred with H.E.A.R.T. members are eligible for 30 days of pet health insurance included with registration at no additional cost and 10% discount on annual policy through AKC Pet Insurance.

We shoot to calve heifers the in first part of February. Over the years, Frank and I have debated about the timing of breeding the show heifers. His highest priority has always been to get them bred regardless if they might miss a show the next year.

Objective:  To study the effect of BW on heart rate (HR), aortic (Ao), left atrial (LA) and ventricular (LV) linear dimensions in cats, and to calculate 95% prediction intervals for these variables in normal adult pure-bred cats.

Buyer must communicate with the seller prior to purchasing to ensure the bred beef heifer meets all TAEP eligibility requirements. Bred beef heifers that do not meet all eligibility requirements between October 1, 2003 and date of purchase will be denied cost share reimbursement.

With a strong, excellent flavor, this arugula is extra cold hardy, vigorous, and genetically diverse. Along with their Mizuna Landrace and many other tasty greens, Ice-bred Arugula is an essential part of Tobacco Road Farm's ever-popular Spicy Salad Mix.

In 1989, Brett Grohsgal of Even Star Organic Farm in Eastern Shore, Maryland bred this open pollinated landrace from two Dutch strains of arugula and selected for cold hardiness. Tobacco Road Farm in Lebanon, Connecticut has been growing these spicy greens every winter for nearly a decade, continuing to select for winter hardiness in even colder conditions. For winter growing, we plant in November and cover with hoops and plastic row covers until the warmth of spring. The photo above shows a late-spring planting of arugula at Tobacco Road Farm, and how their natural farming and soil building practices produced an early June crop with no flea beetle damage.

The Precision Breeding Bill would modify existing UK GMO regulation, which is derived from EU legislation. The EU legislation provides that an organism is classed as a GMO where its genetic material has been altered in way that does not occur naturally. It does not distinguish between instances where the genetic modification could have been produced using traditional processes and instances where the genetic modification could only have been produced using genetic modification technologies i.e. EU law does not provide for a separate category of precision bred organisms or similar.

There will be producers who have feed resources and believe profits are to be had in 2023 and 2024. The quickest way for these producers to increase the feeder cattle supply is through the addition of bred cows or bred heifers. Bred heifers receive a premium over bred cows. For example, the price ratio of bred heifers to bred cows has averaged 2.5% over the last 5 years. In other words, bred heifers are on average 2.5% more expensive than bred cows. The premium is the widest in the Spring (March-May) and lowest in the Fall (September-November). There is a premium due to the longer useful life of the cow in the herd but smaller than expected due to potential issues with calving which can occur with first calf heifers.

However, the national bred cow price masks several factors that impact price. Age, weight, months bred, genetics and market conditions are the primary drivers of bred cow prices. One study using Oklahoma City bred heifer and bred cow sales from 2000-2015 estimated the premiums and discounts for each of these factors in the bred cow market (see Mitchell et al. 2018). To illustrate how these factors could impact producers' decisions to either buy or sell bred cows this year, I walk through several scenarios assuming we have a three-year-old bred cow that is six months pregnant, is a medium/large 1-2, and black hided. February 2023 prices for this type of cow in Oklahoma City, OK is $1,150 but has averaged $870 over the past three years.

Producers selling cows older than this should expect to receive a discount and the discounts tend to decrease almost linearly from 0%-20% as cows age. A four-year-old bred cow would cost $1,150 (0% discount), a seven-year-old bred cow would cost $1,035 (10% discount), and a ten-year-old bred cow would cost $920 (20% discount). Producers considering marketing older cows as bred should acknowledge the heavy discounts assigned as age increases.

Current market conditions will also play a role in the price of bred cows. The feeder cattle and corn markets are the two largest drivers of bred cow prices. Higher feeder cattle prices create incentives for more calves to be brought to market and bred cows are the quickest way to do so. Higher corn prices increase the cost of gain in feedlots. This puts downward pressure on feeder cattle prices although the impact is delayed as it takes at least 6-8 months before the potential calf will reach the feedlot. Combining these impacts and current price forecasts can show the premiums and discounts producers can expect to receive for a bred cow.

Premiums/discounts are relative to our bred cow (three-year-old that is six months pregnant) and current CME Feeder Cattle ($210 per cwt.) and Corn ($6 per bu.) contracts. Table 1 shows these premiums and discounts. The nearby feeder cattle price at the time of sale has a much larger impact than the nearby corn price. For example, relative to the BASE, a $0.50 decline would increase the price of our bred cow by 0.77% whereas a $10 per cwt. increase in the feeder cattle contract increases the price by 5.29%. Producers looking to rebuild herds through the bred cow market should be aware of these and other factors before buying or selling bred cows. 17dc91bb1f
