The song alludes to London street crime, and tells the story of a romantic couple who refuse to become informants for a pair of gangsters, the gangsters might be an allusion to the Kray Twins, since the Kray family lived in 178 Vallance Road; and the danger that this decision creates. The title is a slang term used by comedian Tony Hancock for a punch to the throat; while "two crooked fingers" refers to the V-sign.[1][2][3] "Joseph bloody in the hole" is a reference to Genesis, chapter 37.

When I first started the March Madness- style song bracket for MIOSM, I had the principal play snippets of each song on the morning announcements each day. In 2021 when we had a good portion of our students on zoom and we weren't doing morning announcements in the building, I switched to using slides to have students listen to the tracks and vote in their homerooms whenever the homeroom teacher wanted to do it each day, and it was so much better! Homeroom teachers could share their class' vote right in the slide instead of remembering to email me, and they could incorporate the listening into their day at the time that made the most sense for them.

Anyway, looks like the first round is open through 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, June 13. Vote here, check out the entire bracket here (or below) and take a listen to the accompanying Spotify playlist. Go Whiskeytown!

This year the theme for Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM) is the same as last year: "Music: The Sound of My Heart". I have been doing a "musical March madness"-style song bracket, where students listen to different songs each day and vote on their favorites, for several years now, and last year's bracket focused on songs from various genres with the word "love" in the title (it was a huge success- see last year's bracket here if you haven't seen it yet). Although the theme is the same I wanted to do something different for our song bracket, and I'm really excited about the new direction I'll be taking!

As I did last year, I'm going to be setting up google slides files with the songs for each day embedded in the slides so that classes can vote in their homerooms. If you want to see how I organize the logistics so classes can vote every day regardless of whether they have music that day or not, check out last year's post (and definitely let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to help). Doing it in slides was such an easy way to have all the songs organized and make it easy for the homeroom teachers to report their class' vote rather than having to email me every day!

I wanted to change up the music, though, while still tying into the theme. So this year I chose all instrumental music that evoke a broad spectrum of moods, and I'm asking students to vote on which song "speaks to their heart" more. I'm also tying this into our social-emotional learning curriculum and giving homeroom teachers some options for discussing the emotions of the music with their students if they have the time/ want to tie it in (you can see those in the slides linked below). I'm really excited about this because it has definitely been an emotionally turbulent time these last few months especially! Here are the songs I'll be using this year (in no particular order):

I'm excited to see how the students respond to this year's playlist, and I'm curious to see which song wins out in the end! I'm hopeful that this year's theme will put the focus on the musicality of the selections over the artists or the lyrics, which I think will be different from previous years.

This year the theme for Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM) is "Music Is All of Us". I have been doing a "musical March madness"-style song bracket, where students listen to different songs each day and vote on their favorites, for several years now, and I was so excited to see the new theme this year that could be taken in so many cool directions! I decided I wanted to compile songs that focus on the importance of "us"- friendship, unity, togetherness, community.

As I have done the last few years, I'm going to be setting up google slides files with the songs for each day embedded in the slides so that classes can vote in their homerooms. If you want to see how I organize the logistics so classes can vote every day regardless of whether they have music that day or not, check out my 2021 MIOSM post (and definitely let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to help). Doing it in slides was such an easy way to have all the songs organized and make it easy for the homeroom teachers to report their class' vote rather than having to email me every day! I don't have the rights to share the song files, but you can make a copy of my slide templates and add the audio files yourself by clicking on the image below:

I'm so excited to focus on the power of "us" this year- I think it's such a powerful message for today more than ever. Here are the songs I'll be using in this year's bracket (in no particular order):

I'm excited to see how the students respond to this year's playlist, and I'm curious to see which song wins out in the end! What are your plans for Music In Our Schools Month this year? What are other songs that fit this theme? I'd love to hear more suggestions in the comments below. If you're looking for more ideas to use for MIOSM, here are all my posts on the topic.

Here is the general concept, I'll put together a bracket of 16 songs,(Vivir Mi Vida, El Mismo Sol, etc.) you and your students listen to two songs at a time based on a schedule of one "battle" per day that I will post. Your students then vote in an online poll as to which song they like the best. Classrooms across the country can participate! I think it would be a blast! For added fun, I'd love to have teachers volunteer to have their students make a news report for each match in Spanish... maybe a fake interview with the musical artist about how he/she feels about the victory, loss, etc.

I had the same problem with mine and decided to design and 3D print a replacement. I salvaged the original brass inserts and pressed them I to my printed bracket with a soldering iron. Works perfectly. If you still need the part, I can get you the stl file so you can print your own. My design does not have the spring tabs for mounting the LED brake lights--I only needed the front bracket. However, it might be possible to use my part for the rear bracket if you are willing to attach the LED board with some foam double-sided tape, or adhesive. Let me know it you want me to post the file. Cheers.

Check out our Youtube playlist to hear samples of each song that appeared in the bracket, and listen to our "New Orleans Favorites" Spotify playlist for even more great New Orleans music.

3. Assign a bracket each night for students to listen to at home. They listen to two songs and decide which song they like better. Students who want to, can work ahead as well. As they listen to the song, have them make a list of 5-10 words they understood from the song and write the translation.

4. The next day in class, students vote on which song they like best and that song is the winner and advances to the next round. When you get to the second round, you can play the two songs in class and take a quick vote.

For an editable bracket, along with an editable, check out our World Language Music Lesson product, which includes a template for a 16 song bracket as well as a sample Spanish bracket with 16 Spanish songs and lyrics. If you do this activity in class, please share your brackets! You can email us at spanishplans@gmail.com, or tweet us @SpanishPlans.

From an ELL teacher:

My students each chose songs to put in the hopper, we ended up with around 60 songs. We slotted them as they were pulled to complete the bracket. There were a lot of groans when some favorite songs ended up paired in the first round against each other.
