Three things to aim for are denseness, tension, and momentum. Start simple focusing on the root or the 3rd. Inversions are used frequently while using the 5th sparingly adds a certain sense of satisfaction when you finally hear it. Coming in on the strong beats 1 and 3 are helpful while making good use of the 16th note and the triplet is where your groove can be found. Find a motif, use the call and response technique, and play the octave to end a phrase or finalize a musical statement. All the high frequencies (above 1000 Hz) should be filtered out. Bass is often considered the "lead" instrument in reggae because it is responsible (along with the drums) for establishing a song's groove.

Although identifying the original composer of the one drop rhythm is a controversial matter, this most recognisable and genre-specific of beats was undoubtedly brought to mainstream attention by the legendary Carlton Barrett, drummer with Bob Marley and the Wailers.

Step 2: In the simplest terms, the one drop is defined by the lack of the always-expected kick drum on beat 1 (hence the name - the 1 is dropped) and the emphasis in the bar moving to beat 3, with simultaneous kick and sidestick or snare hits. With just that in place, the feel is immediately transformed.

Step 6: Finally, here are two variations on the one drop that are worth knowing, both of them bringing the kick drum back to the fore. The rockers rhythm puts the emphasis back on the downbeat by placing kicks on beats 1 and 3. And the steppers beat goes for a more driving feel altogether with kick drums on all four beats of the bar.

You should then play the hi-hats on beats two and four a bit louder to get a nice offbeat feel. Work on playing this groove at various tempos, as some reggae tunes have it quite slow while others are a lot faster.

That extra bass drum will fall just before the last hi-hat note in the bar. Again, the closer you place that bass drum to the hi-hat on beat four, the groovier this beat will sound. It will sound even better if you place strong accents on beats two and four.

One of the trickier parts of reggae drumming is switching between straight and swing feels. It often sounds a lot better within the music if you play a blend of the two. To be able to do that, you need to have a strong foundational ability to play both.
