British band The 1975 said on Sunday they have canceled shows in Taiwan and Muslim-majority Indonesia, a day after Malaysia banned them from performing there after their frontman kissed a bandmate on stage and criticized the country's anti-LGBTQ laws.

It was not immediately clear why the band canceled their July 25 show in Taiwan, which has a proud reputation as a bastion of LGBTQ rights and liberalism, including allowing same-sex marriage in 2019.

Gigi (pronounced [ii]) is an Indonesian rock band led by founder, Armand Maulana, and songwriter Dewa Budjana.[1] Formed in March 1994, the band has released fifteen studio albums. Other than their hit songs "11 Januari", "Nakal", and "My Facebook" which achieve moderate success in Indonesia, the band is known for their releases of religious compilation albums, international recognition and solo career of guitarist Dewa Budjana, and the audition of vocalist of Armand Maulana for INXS.

At that time, Dewa Budjana is starting his career, but no one wants to play music with him, which he later said "Maybe because my music is not standard".[2] Later, Budjana was invited by Fariz RM to fill the guitars in his song "Cinta di Balik Noda", with Meriam Bellina as the guest vocals. Then, he recorded with Spirit band, and become the session player of Twilite Orchestra.

In September 1993, Budjana, Thomas, and Ronald hanged out in Triple M studio in Central Jakarta. Pay, who's there at that time, asked Budjana "Budj, why don't you start a band with Ronald and Thomas?". Agreed, then the trio started to do rehearsals at Studio 45 in Pondok Indah, South Jakarta. With Pierre (later joined Ronald in dr.pm) as temporary vocalist, the trio was later joined by Armand Maulana as the main vocalist,[2] and used the name BDH (Beri Daku Harapan - Give Me Hope) as the temporary name of the band.[3]

On deciding the name of the band, Budjana jokingly say "Orangutan". With everyone laugh at that name, Budjana then again jokingly say "Gigi" (meaning "Teeth" in Bahasa Indonesia). However, the name Gigi is approved by the other members.[3]

In 1994, Gigi released their first full length, "Angan", which expected to be sold around 100,000 copies.[2] The second album "Dunia" was released in 1995, with hit songs of "Janji" and "Nirwana". A year later, Baron later left the band[3] to continue his studies in United States.[4] In that same year, Ronald was suspicious about Thomas' addiction to substances, which soured their relationship.[2]

The band released their 3rd album "3/4" in 1996, which Thomas then left the band and went into rehabilitation.[3] Gigi then recruited Opet Alatas, former crew member to replace Thomas. Ronald then quit the band to pursue his career in "dr.pm", and was replaced by Budhy Haryono.

Wanting to continue the band, Armand and Budjana released the next album "2x2", which considered ambitious since involved Indra Lesmana, and Billy Sheehan (the bassist of Mr. Big) as session players, and with mixing and mastering process done in the United States.[2]

Since 2004, Gigi has continuously released side albums during Eid al-Fitr, which consisted of rearranged cover songs and new written songs. Starting with "Raihlah Kemenangan", as of 2023 the band has released eight spiritual albums, which considered separate from their studio releases. Armand said "In the past, we heard lot of Indonesian religious albums, especially Bimbo (artist)", and later said that Armand want to bring back the atmosphere of hearing religious songs during fasting period.[5]

Since Gigi's release of 2x2, guitarist Dewa Budjana has been internationally recognized,[7] and established as one of Indonesia's greatest guitarist of all time.[7][8] In Budjana's solo album "Mahandini", he recruited international well-known musicians such as Jordan Rudess (from Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment), John Frusciante (from Red Hot Chili Peppers), Mohini Dey, and Marco Minnemann (from The Aristocrats). He also collaborated with grammy winning Vinnie Colaiuta and Antonio Sanchez, also world known musicians such as Peter Erskine, Jimmy Johnson, Joe Locke, Gary Husband, Jack DeJohnette, Tony Levin, Bob Mintzer and Guthrie Govan.

In 2005, Armand Maulana was secretly invited to INXS' audition to replace Michael Hutchence in Rock Star: INXS. When the news broke, Dewa Budjana suggested to disband the band if Armand left Gigi.[2] In the pre-audition, INXS' personnels then requested to the producer of the show to cancel the TV series, and just to proceed with Armand, since his voice sounds similar to the late Michael Hutchence.[6] However, since Armand is late to register to the audition, even though he already considered as one of the 15 shortlisted candidate, Armand is not participating in the series, and acts as an observer of the auditions.[6]

Mocca was formed in 1997 by Arina Ephipania (vocals, flute) and Riko Prayitno (guitar), who met while studying at the National Institute of Technology.[3] In a 2004 interview with The Straits Times Ephipania said "Riko was influenced by rock music, I was fascinated by motion picture music and story telling, so we came up with this concept of telling stories in a musical form."[4] The other two principal members are Achmad Pratama (a.k.a. Toma) (bass) and Indra Massad (drums). They signed with independent label Fast Forward Records in 2002.[5] The band is popular in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Korea and Taiwan.[6][7] Mocca's fans are called Swinging Friends.[8]

Grrrl Gang emerged in 2016 amid a wave of new bands playing indie rock and dream pop in Southeast Asia, forming after Rumandung and guitarist Edo Alventa convinced Sentana to join the Yogyakarta-based collective Terror Weekend, which organized shows for touring bands visiting the city.

Background:  Simonart's band is a soft tissue band that connects the cleft gap of the base of the nostril or the margin of the alveolus. While research on the prevalence of Simonart's band in cleft lip and palate cases has been carried out in various countries, research on Simonart's band in Indonesia has yet to be conducted.

Material and methods:  The data of cleft patients were reviewed retrospectively over a 9-year period at the Cleft Lip and Palate Center Center, Harapan Kita Women and Children Hospital, Jakarta, Indonesia. The patients were divided based on the type of cleft and the type of Simonart's band. The results were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics.

Results:  Out of 638 cleft patients from the period 2008-2016, 77 patients had Simonart's band. The liptolip band was most commonly found (52 cases, 67.5%). The lip-to-alveolus band was found in 20 cases (26.0%) and the alveolus-to-alveolus band had the lowest prevalence of 5 cases (6.5%). Associations between the cleft type (unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), unilateral cleft lip and alveolus (UCLA), and bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP)) and Simonart's band type were all significant (p = 0.001, according to Fisher's exact test), which indicates significant differences in the distribution of the bands with regard to different cleft types. There was a significant difference in the distribution of the bands between the UCLP and UCLA groups (p = 0.000). On the other hand, the distribution of the bands in the UCLP group did not differ much from that in the BCLP group (p = 0.065).

Conclusions:  The prevalence of Simonart's band was significantly higher in the patients with the unilateral complete cleft of the primary and secondary palate than in the subjects with the cleft of the primary palate. In the UCLP group, most patients had the lip-to-lip band type. In the BCLP group, the majority also had the lip-to-lip band type. In contrast, in the UCLA group, the majority showed the lip-to-alveolus band type.

Thrashing guitar riffs, throbbing bass licks, and banging drum cymbals resound as the lead singer howls into the mic. The crowd forms a mosh pit, screaming fans go wild, and the band members, visibly energized, smile and bang their heads as they tear through another performance.

Outside of pockets of conservative strongholds in the world's largest Muslim-majority nation, most Indonesians practice a moderate form of Islam. Religion is often mixed in with mainstream culture, including music. For example, prayer breaks are incorporated into the annual Hammersonic metal festival, the largest of its kind in southeast Asia. VoB and other metal artists also often change lyrics when covering bands like Metallica to make the songs more suitable for their religion and culture.

"I think they are really talented," photographer Putu Sayoga told The Week in an interview. Hearing about an all-girl Muslim metal band in the news, he traveled seven hours last spring from Jakarta to the Garut military base to experience the VoB phenomenon himself. At that time, they had already performed on national television and were beginning to gain wide recognition and approval from the country. Their parents also rode the wave, eventually giving their full support.

VoB continues to make waves not only in Indonesia but around the world. Kurnia has big dreams for the band: She wants to travel all across the world and introduce people to their music, which the band dubs as "the other side of metalism." She hopes to inspire other girls to break out of their shells.

Formed in early 2021 by El Tria Raffi (guitar) and M Ardyan Firmansyah (drums), the pair soon brought in bassist Syahidan Khafila and began solidifing their first batch of Dazzle songs. The lineup grew with the addition of Agan Juniar Iksar, who also handles vocal duties in the band Roots of Earth. The band released a demo later that summer, showcasing their catchy yet thrash-tastic style, which has been influenced by everyone from Red Death to Iron Age to Municipal Waste.

This is what the Dazzle dudes had to say about the scene in their country when I reached out them: "The hardcore punk scene in Indonesia, especially in Malang, has been very active for few years. During the pandemic, many bands are dealing with the absence of gigs by releasing new albums, EPs or singles. 2351a5e196
