TL;DR version it kept failing regardless of how far back I went. Tried to download the backup file from my Ubiquity account and it asked for my UI account password. No matter what I enter it told me the password was wrong and wouldn't let me download. Contacted UI support and received this lovely response

Was running a Cloud Key G2, which died. Installed the latest UniFi Network Server (7.5.187) on a Raspberry Pi 3B+, restored backup from Cloud Key via web interface on the local network, everything came up perfectly and is working...but the Network Server does not show up in my UniFi Portal. Should appear under "Network Servers" but just isn't there. I thought maybe it was because it had the same system name as the Cloud Key (which still appears in my portal, as offline), so I changed the system name. Still no go. Rebooted everything, still nada.

I thought this might be useful for anyone that would like to copy their nightly backups off their Unifi OS system. I just upgraded to a new UDMP from a USG so I had to move to this. Anyways it works so if your interested keep reading.

This is useful if the config on a site gets messed up from a few weeks ago and needs restoring. We can't just restore an entire backup from that time period as it would roll back any major changes, as well as any devices that were added or removed.

Thanks for this guide. I managed to migrate from a Pi to a UCK using the backup/restore method with the UCK on a dynamic address. I then powered off the Pi, changed the UCK IP to match the static IP of the Pi and was amazed when all the devices just reconnected. No re-adoption required!

Thanks for this informative write up. I am a little confused still though. If I am migrating a site from Windows PC controller 6.4.54 to another Windows PC controller 6.4.54 which steps are different? Do I turn off new user interface and Export on PC 1 or just do a regular backup? Do I turn off new user interface and Import on PC 2 or just do a restore? And how will the inform URL be updated? Thanks, Todd

More than likely the cloud key has been corrupted. I have one that once every 6-9 months crashes & requires a factory reset with a restore from the backup file, This gen 1 cloud key is on a UPS so power is not a factor.

The only exception is if you can find a backup file from the old controller.. If you can find the backup the you can create a new controller and restore the backup from the existing controller to the new controller to regain management control

There are backups in multiple places - for the CloudKey, and for the controller - and my notes say that I got the backup I needed from /usr/lib/unifi/data. However, that feels a bit suspect - I think it was probably in /data (and some subdirectories under that) for the controller.

After the update process is successfully completed download a backup from your Cloud Key. Did you use a Cloud Key Gen 2 with Camera Protection also update it to the latest available version and download the configuration file for the protect software.

On the Unifi Cloud Key Gen 2 it also necessary to update to the latest available update (in my case 6.5.55). After the firmware are up to date, take a backup from the Network and Protect application.

Thanks for this guide. Worked well also from USG3/UCK(G1) to UDR.

One hint: Update the UniFi OS to 3.x at earliest after the restore of the UCK backup taken at its latest version 7.2.95 is done. UniFi OS will update Network Manager to 7.3.x. Update Network Manager to 7.2.95 on the UDR is possible via the GUI prior.

4. Once the Setup Wizard launches, the first page will offer the option to restore from a previous backup. Click that link and select your recently downloaded .unf file. Note that this will also restore the Controller credentials from your original Cloud Key.

5. Wait until the backup is restored. Once UniFi finishes working, you will be presented with the login screen for the new Controller. Remember to use the username and password from the old Controller.

I have noticed that after you configure the switch using cloud, you can remove it from the cloud and revert it to the local GUI for management. At that time the Cloud/app forgets about the switch, but the switch retains its configuration. At this point you can make a backup using the webinterface. The opposite is not possible: you can not re-introduce a switch that has been configured locally to the cloud.

@yousch When the 1930 is managed via the cloud there is no backup option and you can only have the option to manage it locally and remove it from the cloud. If you want to put the switch back into the cloud you will need to factory reset the switch and start the cloud discovery process again.

@Jarvar It is either or not both for management. And when managed in the web portal there is no option to download a configuration, as that is stored in the cloud. Firmware is offered from the web portal when available.

Controls whether or not the backup will contain installation data and settingsfor packages. Omitting this data from a backup can be a useful way to quicklyremove all traces of packages from a configuration when troubleshooting.

After uploading the SSL certificate to your controller, you need to switch on the "Use Secure Portal" and "Redirect using hostname" options and enter the hostname from the SSL certificate, for example unifi.example.com

After (unsuccessful) migration of unifi-controller app from old to new container I've been trapped into "lost password" issue. It looks it is well known bug in Unifi app and fighting with it and Mongodb already made me crazy - so, I've decided to delete container and start from the scratch.. I have deleted file, prune system and even pulled new image to have it clean and without settings from unsuccessful migration. No way! Some remains of MongoDb are still there and I can't reach "clean" install - so the question is HOW to delete ALL connected data (most probably mongo db) from docker? Or maybe somebody already found the right way to change password via ssh? I have tried a bunch of proposed - didn't worked in my case (my db is empty both in ace and admin). P.

Hi raulfg3 - I have migrated controller as unifi suggested (unfortunately) - straight from welcome page of new install (using the link to upload file) so, no chances to delete config. The problem right now is not the lack of password (which is/was problematic) but I can not delete mongodb settings/data. As the result I'm deploying new install but controller (and web-gui) is already getting some old data from migration.

BlueCoffee - I would like to cut it down to the bone (well docker bone) and to be able to start from fresh one. So far without success. I've re-deployed new containers (after all files etc deleted) already 5-6 times - same story, some data are stored in unknown places but unifi is able to grab those faulty db.

Yes, docker image from "linuxserver/unifi-controller" - as far as I'm aware of, this version does not require external Mongodb - setup is made by Unifi itself (.js?). So, the db is available directly from the unifi container. I can log into container, call mongodb and list (show) dbs and check all tables (admin, devices etc). Shure, as for new deployment is should be empty - but no, going to web-gui I do not have startup screen but already login prompt. Strange but you might be right - there might be some leftowers within system (is it possible anyway? container should be isoleted somehow...) ff782bc1db
