The Nokia X software platform was based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP)[11] and the Linux kernel.[12] Nokia combined Android apps with Nokia experiences (such as HERE Maps, Nokia Xpress and MixRadio) and Microsoft services (such as Skype and Outlook). Nokia officially described the software as bringing "the best of all worlds". It also encompasses features from the Asha platform, such as the Fastlane notification centre. The user interface mimics that of Windows Phone.

Google's applications were replaced by Nokia's and Microsoft's. When first released, the Google Play store was not included, with Nokia offering apps from their own Nokia Store. After the v2.1 update in September 2014 users were allowed to install Google Play and various other Google services through third party tools, but if users attempt to install Google services on their Nokia X devices it would usually be "bricked" and would require the Nokia Software Recovery Tool to restore the data.[13]

As of February 2014, 75% of Android apps were compatible with the platform. Nokia noted that developers could port the remaining missing apps in a matter of hours, and in an attempt to encourage developers to contribute to the platform, added compatible Android apps without developer approval.[14]

And while 10,000 apps is no mean feat, it did take over seven years for Symbian to reach that milestone, while Apple hit its first 100,000 in a little over a year after releasing the first SDK for iOS.

There were even efforts to tackle the apps and ecosystem question. After Nokia's launch of its own, rather than a Symbian, app store provoked "much heated discussion and conflict", the Foundation started work on an uber-store with APIs that third-parties could use to fashion their own stores from. For example, developers with five apps could make a mini-store just containing those apps. Better yet, they could sell them through the Foundation's channel without the organisation taking a cut.

"I don't think we were ever untethered or empowered to compete directly at an ecosystem level [...] looking back in hindsight, we weren't as successful with apps, or app stores or developers or any of those things we has as goals at the foundation because we weren't empowered to succeed. There was still a lot of conflict, some infighting among the manufacturers and issues that needed to be resolved" such as who would pay for the necessary development work, said Williams.

Around 15 million Series 40 apps are downloaded a day, according to Nokia, and 42 percent of the last billion apps downloaded from the Nokia Store were for Series 40; a figure likely to rise considering the steep drop in Symbian shipments).

ALL my java apps/games either load or run, or load and run unusually slow.

A very good example of this is the mobile gmail app.(You can go have try it out. No need to have an account..just try to run it and you'll see what I mean)

It takes a very long time to load up. It's definately not normal. It doesn't show up for more than 10 seconds after I clicked to open it. Java games are also unusually slow. They not only load slow, but run slow too. A same java game will run at perfect speed on my Sony Ericsson phone, but will lag considerbly on my N95 8GB.

I really don't see the reason why as my N95 8gb is much more powerful. ( I have the SE z610 )

These days, I try to avoid java apps altogheter but there are a few apps that are java exclusive that I just want to have running properly.

The Gmail app and Java apps work fine on my N95 8GB. Some Java apps are designed for a particular phone brand. ie. If I load some of my old SE Java apps into my N95 then of course they're not going to work properly. Best to look for apps made specifically for the N95 8GB and see if they run ok. Otherwise, something may be wrong with the handset.

are the apps installed in the phone memory or the inbuilt storage/memory card? , ive discovered installing those apps you use a lot to the phone memory has gave them a nice speed boost and i dont have the laggy problem with them anymore

I have Sumsung C5212. It supports java apps. It doesn't have internet and is not touchscreen.

But it is my second phone after my smartphoneĀ

Smartphones have become very affordable especially if you buy it with a certain plan in a certain telecommunication company. So even almost 100% schoolchildren now have smartphones It is in Russia. I don't know what is in other parts of the world.

I think Java can best fit for most non-smartphones, specially Nokia non-smartphones. I had and already have a Nokia phone which is Symbian but I use Java apps of chess.com for several years and it will work well but for a period of time that was unavailable. Now it's fine and I will use it whenever I'm in a road or in a place where there is no internet connection.

I have a Firefox OS phone - Intex Cloud FX. The phone is so basic that I wouldn't consider it as a smartphone. However, it has some really cool features like context search that provides apps related to your search query. They call it the 'single window search'.

Circles representing photos, apps, contacts and messages hover around the top of a front-facing Android phone and animate to show completion of transfer. The phone displays the message 'Choose what to copy' with a choice of items to copy and the amount of data that copying will require.

The reason why you encounter this problem in the majority of the cases is that you have downloaded a badly compiled java application or an application that is developed specifically for another type of phone but which you forcefully install on your phone.

Toikkanen replied that the figure I quoted is a subsidised price for the Lumia 520. But it's what the punter sees when they go shopping - would they know or care? One phone does Android apps, and the other doesn't. The official response is that Lumia still offers more: access to Office, Xbox and a slicker and snappier experience. Nokia says that after much market research it doesn't fear cannibalisation. It's going to be taking share off other Android manufacturers, particularly no-name devices.Ā  006ab0faaa
