We do our best to block spam and scam calls. Our network defenses update every 6 minutes. However, scammers sometimes still find a way around these network protections. While we continue to improve our network filters to block a higher percentage of all spam and scam calls, we encourage all our customers to report any spam or scam calls that we are unable to block. You can also report calls that you deem safe that might have been incorrectly blocked. There are two ways you can report calls:

From the app (Basic):

1. In the Scam Shield app, tap the Activity tab. A call log appears.

2. Select the number that needs to be reported, then tap Report

3. Choose the best category that represents the type of call, then tap Send Report > Done

From the app (Premium):

1. In the Scam Shield app, tap the Activity tab. Select the menu icon (three dots).

2. Tap Report and select the number that needs to be reported.

The Messaging Malware Mobile Anti-Abuse Working Group (M3AAWG) Board of Directors announced the formation of the Artificial Intelligence Committee on December 20th, 2023. M3AAWG intends to position the organization at the intersection of AI and anti-abuse to serve the anti-abuse industry.

Hyundai is notifying customers about the anti-theft service campaign through multiple points of contact (e.g., mail, email, outbound phone contact, paid media and a dedicated website) with instructions to bring their vehicle to a mobile clinic or the nearest Hyundai dealership to have the free software installed. The Minneapolis Police Department, St. Paul Police Department, and Hyundai will host a free event this weekend to install anti-theft software for affected Hyundai owners to combat car thefts at two locations in the Twin Cities.

As part of the global GSMA Open Gateway initiative, mobile operators Claro, TIM and Vivo have announced the launch of three network API (Application Programmable Interfaces) services focused on improving digital security: Number Verify, SIM Swap and Device Location. The announcement, the first one in the region supported by multiple operators, was made today during an event hosted by the GSMA in So Paulo.

Launched earlier this year at MWC Barcelona, the GSMA Open Gateway initiative represents a paradigm shift in the way the global telecoms industry designs and brings to market new mobile apps, immersive and digital services. It will also help the mobile industry, enterprises and developers deliver better digital experiences over 5G networks for the benefit of customers, society and the economy.

GSMA Open Gateway is a common and open framework between operators to make it easier for developers and cloud providers to build safer apps and services that seamlessly communicate with each other and work for all devices and customers. This is done through single access points to mobile networks known as APIs. From Brazil to China, Norway to New Zealand, nearly 40 mobile operator groups worldwide, representing 228 mobile networks and 64% of global connections are already part of the initiative.

These are new questions officers and prosecutors will have to think about with Alabama's anti-gang law that went into effect September 1st. Attorney General Steve Marshall's office held a training session at the Mobile County Sheriff's Office this week to review what evidence is needed to prove someone is in a gang and that their criminal activity helped their gang in some way.

Most bacterial genomes contain horizontally acquired and transmissible mobile genetic elements, including temperate bacteriophages and integrative and conjugative elements. Little is known about how these elements interact and co-evolved as parts of their host genomes. In many cases, it is not known what advantages, if any, these elements provide to their bacterial hosts. Most strains of Bacillus subtilis contain the temperate phage SP and the integrative and conjugative element ICEBs1. Here we show that the presence of ICEBs1 in cells protects populations of B. subtilis from predation by SP, likely providing selective pressure for the maintenance of ICEBs1 in B. subtilis. A single gene in ICEBs1 (yddK, now called spbK for SP killing) was both necessary and sufficient for this protection. spbK inhibited production of SP, during both activation of a lysogen and following de novo infection. We found that expression spbK, together with the SP gene yonE constitutes an abortive infection system that leads to cell death. spbK encodes a TIR (Toll-interleukin-1 receptor)-domain protein with similarity to some plant antiviral proteins and animal innate immune signaling proteins. We postulate that many uncharacterized cargo genes in ICEs may confer selective advantage to cells by protecting against other mobile elements.

In strains lysogenic for SP, the phage is integrated in spsM, near the terminus of replication [32,34,35]. SP contains genes needed for production of and resistance to the peptide antibiotic sublancin [35,36], providing a growth advantage to the host in the presence of cells sensitive to sublancin. Most phage genes are repressed in the lysogen, but during the recA-dependent SOS response to DNA damage, SP gene expression is induced and the phage excises from the host chromosome. In cells capable of producing phage particles, the activated phage enters the lytic cycle, produces progeny phage, and causes cell lysis and release of phage particles.

In previous work [42], we used Tn-seq to identify genes in recipients that affected the efficiency of stable acquisition of ICEBs1 in conjugation. Briefly, a library of random transposon insertions in a strain that is an SP lysogen and cured of ICEBs1 was used as the recipient in conjugation. We selected for transconjugants that had acquired ICEBs1. Insertion mutations that cause a decrease in acquisition of ICEBs1 were underrepresented in transconjugants relative to controls. We found that insertions in some position in the SP gene yonF were underrepresented, indicating that these insertion mutations reduced the ability of would-be recipients to stably acquire ICEBs1 from donors. Because the frequency of insertions in other positions in yonF was unaltered in transconjugants [42], and because neither yonF nor yonE is normally expressed in SP lysogens, the phenotype could not be due to loss of yonF. We hypothesized that the reduction in acquisition of ICEBs1 might be due to inappropriate expression of yonE, the gene immediately downstream of yonF, likely transcribed from the promoter for the antibiotic resistance gene (spc) in the transposon.
