With the amount of money Amazon is spending to build out its network of cashierless checkout stores, it wants your trust (and your money) as well. Shrinking the delta between when you leave the store and when you get your receipt will go a long way towards building both.

That\u2019s different than my experience at the pocket-sized Amazon Go convenience stores in Seattle, which tend to send a receipt a few minutes after you walk out. An hour, let alone hour-urz is a loooong time to wait for a receipt. Especially for a new type of autonomous shopping experience people are unfamiliar with, and one where you don\u2019t interact with anyone as you leave the store.

The first time you experience cashierless checkout, it feels a little like shoplifting. No one stops you as you grab a handful of candy and leave. It\u2019s the perfect crime! But that illicit thrill immediately turns to a little bit of concern the longer you wait for your receipt: Did Amazon accurately see which items I got? Did I get charged the right amount? And, why am I eating so much candy?

When I first spoke with autonomous retail startup AiFi CEO, Steve Gu, back in October of 2019, real-time receipts was his big pitch. At the time, he said AiFi\u2019s technology produced receipts in 200 milliseconds (for convenience sized stores). I\u2019m no Time Lord, but 200 milliseconds is a lot faster than a couple of hours, and I\u2019d rather know sooner than later that Amazon is charging me properly.

Singleton adds that she was confused about how the scanning system worked and worried that her groceries might be tallied incorrectly. There was no way for her to check her expenses until two hours later when she got a digital receipt, she says.

Other forms of connecting with shoppers when they are not in stores are also emerging from the tech world such as so-called hyperspersonalization apps like Anagog that use edge computing to inform marketers of shopper activities outside of their stores. Walmart also used competitor receipts as a kind of promotion with the since-retired Savings Catcher app that allowed it to provide shoppers with store credit in the difference in cases where competing prices for like items showed differences.

Let's take a look at Amazon's standard return policy. It allows customers to return most items that are sold and fulfilled by Amazon within 30 days of receipt for a full refund. The return policy is more generous for holiday purchases: Most items shipped by Amazon between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31 can be returned through Jan. 31 of the following year. Amazon is quick with refunds, too. In most cases, you'll get it as an "advance" as soon as the shipper scans the bar code on the return label you've taped to your package.
