The Alpha Couple is a fictional couple that recurs in several early Mountain Goats songs. As a general rule, all songs with "Alpha" in their title are songs about the couple (referred to as "Alpha songs"), although a few songs without the word "Alpha" have been confirmed by John Darnielle to be part of the couple's story.

Alpha is the second independent studio album by American Tejano music group Selena y Los Dinos. Released on June 11, 1986 under Manny Guerra's G.P. Productions, it followed two albums the group recorded under different indie music labels. Selena y Los Dinos, led by vocalist Selena, recorded mostly cover songs. Wanting to stand out, bassist A.B. Quintanilla requested original material from Luis Silva after noticing his track record for writing award-winning songs. Silva ignored A.B.'s request and he was inspired by Abraham to write songs himself. The group expanded to include keyboardist Ricky Vela and guitarist Roger Garcia. Vela collaborated with A.B. on "Dame un Beso", while he collaborated with Abraham on "Dame tu Amor". A.B. became Selena y Los Dinos' music producer and songwriter, while Abraham encouraged them to record songs of various genres to appeal to a wider audience. Despite her limited Spanish, Selena recorded all nine tracks phonetically.

A.B. was frustrated that Selena y Los Dinos recorded mostly cover songs and wanted original compositions to stand out, he recalled "we had no songs. We were constantly looking for material". He approached award-winning songwriter Luis Silva who ignored A.B.'s requests for original songs, which made him upset. Abraham encouraged him to write songs himself, which A.B. recalled "was the beginning" of creating "Dame un Beso". He became the group's music producer and songwriter.[9] Selena y Los Dinos expanded to include Ricky Vela on keyboards and Roger Garcia on guitar; both were replacements of Rena Dearman and her husband Rodney Pyatt, respectively. A.B. collaborated with Vela on "Dame un Beso", their first songwriting credit.[10] B-side, "Con Esta Copa", was a cover of the original Los Dinos' single. Vela collaborated with Abraham on "Dame tu Amor", their first collaboration. The track, "Lo Dejo Solo", which was penned by Vela in 1986, was shelved and remained unreleased until 2006 on the posthumous re-issue titled Classic Series, Vol. I, replacing the instrumental "El Tejano", also penned by Vela.[11] Abraham preferred that the group record various genres for Alpha to appeal to a wider audience. He found that the Valley enjoyed accordion-based music, while in West Texas listeners preferred cumbias, and Houston and Dallas audiences liked pop music. Alpha is a Latin pop and rock pop album, with stylistic influences of Tejano, adult contemporary, dance-pop, and regional Mexican music.[12] Daniel Bustamente, the record producer of Houston's Festival Chicano, recalled the music Selena performed at her first appearance at Miller Outdoor Theater as being "still not as full, but she always impressed everybody with that voice. The way she was able to do different things with her voice was like an opera singer, in a sense."[9] Despite her limited Spanish,[10] Selena recorded all nine tracks phonetically.[13]

Selena y Los Dinos's struggles during the production of Alpha were dramatized by Christian Serratos and Gabriel Chavarria as Selena and A.B., respectively, in Netflix's two-part limited drama Selena: The Series (2020-21). In the series, A.B. looks at previous Tejano Music Award for Songwriter of the Year winners, noticing that Silva is the top awarded writer. He requested original material from Silva at the 1986 Tejano Music Awards (TMAs), but Silva was unwilling to provide songs to "a bunch of kids". After persuading Silva to provide the group with two songs, he later regressed his decision the following day. Feeling defeated, A.B. isolates himself in his room and Abraham encourages A.B. to write songs himself. A.B. teaches himself how to write songs by listening to previous winners, understanding a song's musical structure, and scale.[16] In the series, Serratos lip-syncs to the group's works. Savannah Walsh of Elle called the scene an "exhilarating performance".[17] Marco Torres of Houstonia recalled listening to "Dame un Beso" two decades ago during Tejano music's golden age, finding the inclusion of the song in the series as nostalgic.[18]

"Dame un Beso" was released on radio and generated considerable airplay, becoming Selena's first commercially acclaimed single of her career.[22] The song was one of the most played songs on radio stations in Texas while ranking at number one in El Paso, Texas.[20][23] Radio stations KBNA, a bilingual station with the highest audience impressions in El Paso, and XZOL reported "Dame un Beso" received "plenty of spins". The song was also generating spins on Radio Can-owned stations in Ciudad Jurez.[21] The song was also nominated at the 1987 Tejano Music Awards for both Single of the Year and Song of the Year.[24] "Dame un Beso" and "Dame tu Amor" received a resurgence in popularity in the 21st century; the former peaked at number 25 on the US Billboard Latin Digital Song Sales chart in 2020,[25] while the latter peaked at number 31 on the Hot Ringtones chart in 2006.[26]

Now you might not hear all these songs nowadays on the yard, but at one point, these were the go-to songs that the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha used to sing when they wanted to remind the campus who was running things.

Additionally, this soundtrack contains the collectible records, which are little vinyl songs you can find in Minecraft, the game. With the exception of Cat. That song you can find on the previous soundtrack, Volume Alpha.

Many Mountain Goats songs belong in series linked together by namingconventions and common themes. Cataloguing all of these is a massive task, andit's hard to know how complete this is. However, since a large amount ofcommentary exists regarding these, rather than attempting to cover all of it inthe footnotes for each song in a series, I will document series-specificinformation here and link to this page in the annotations.

Along with these series are listed outtakes and extras. This categorydocuments songs which were originally intended for a particular release butwhich ultimately were not included, either being released as bonus tracks(extras) or in another fashion (outtakes).

This is arguably the canonical Mountain Goats series, with numerous songswritten about them and the source of endless arguments about the exactchronology of the songs depicting the almost-divorcing couple. The seriespredates John as a musician, beginning as a collection of poems, one of whicheventually became the Extra Glenns song Twelve Hands High. 1 Johnchose the Alpha suffix as a way of keeping track of the songs, as in Latin thea- prefix designates negation (known as a privativealpha). The first tracks wereaccordingly grouped in a set called Songs from Point Alpha Privative.2 The songs are, unless otherwise specified, intended to besung by either member of the couple. 3

The Alpha Couple are a Catholic 4 man and woman from SouthernCalifornia whose relationship survives solely on the love they want to have foreach other, the hatred they actually share, and the alcohol they imbibe toquash their feelings. John has indicated that the couple was originallyintended to get a divorce, but as he wrote the songs, this didn't wind uphappening. 5 Thinking everything will improve if they move, they leaveCalifornia (after potentially staying in Portland), drink for a year in a motelin Nevada, and stay at least for a time at the Stardust casino on the strip.6 They move and finally settle in Tallahassee, Florida, after theAlpha wife gets pregnant, although it's unclear if they ever have children.7 The specific trajectory of Southern California, then Nevada, andfinally Florida was chosen as it depicts them "crawl[ing] along the bottom ofthe country" until there's nowhere farther to reach, symbolically living offthe lowest scraps of the country. 8 The impoverished part ofTallahassee that they ultimately settle in was chosen for the availability ofcheap alcohol, cheap land, sense of decay and rot, and because their alcoholismand unemployment would prevent them living anywhere else. 8

As Nall describes, the Going to... series describe the feeling of trying to improve your life by traveling tosomewhere else, often only finding the same thing there that you had fled.John described in 1997 that there are no main characters, and that the songsare only very loosely thematically connected. 9

Like the Orange Ball of ... and Going to ... series, John has stated thatthese are mostly unrelated. The Pure ... songs are described as being "kind ofintently focused in [a] way that I think I don't force myself to be on theother ones... more immediate". 13

I have been unable to find anything where John describes this series (if youknow of something, please contact me). However, basedon the titles, it seems that these are songs dedicated to specific individualsor things.

Nall's catalog includes a series for Quetzalcoatl ...songs,which follow an obvious naming convention. However, it seems to me that thesefall under a more general pattern of songs which are named using Nahuatl, theAztec language. I have not found anything where John discusses this series; ifyou know of something, please contact me.

John has made many songs based off of mythological or religious figures, including Aztecs, Satanists, Rastafarians, and others. However, more so thanothers, many songs by John have Biblical references. Many of these referencesare in the song titles, some are quoting scripture, and some are referencingparticular Biblical figures or narratives, even attracting the attention ofreligious scholars. 15 While cataloguing all songs that make anymention of religion would be prohibitive and unnecessarily speculative, thiscategory includes all songs which explicitly reference the Bible. Severalreleases themselves fall into this latter category; these are listed at thebeginning. 2351a5e196
