Okay, so how do you begin to address the assumptions, so deeply ingrained in your psyche, around the sacrifices and compromises needed to succeed? How do you strive for that balance without denying your high achiever identity?

So, are we resigned to a life of mediocrity (and is that so bad??) if we choose not to work ourselves into the ground, become estranged from our children, and accept the inevitability of divorce and loneliness??? What are the challenges that you face when it comes to achieving (I note the ironic choice of word!) work-life balance as a high achiever?

The high achiever is highly driven to get results. They are highly motivated. They are doers. They combine talent, drive and hard work to get things done and their achievements, as a result, are impressive.

I recently spoke to Ruth Gotian, leadership coach, educator, and social scientist who studies high achievers in order to learn about their mindsets and practices. Gotian is the chief learning officer and assistant professor of Education in Anesthesiology at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York and is the 2021 recipient of the Thinkers50 RADAR Award, recognizing her as the world's #1 emerging management thinker.

The Anxious Achiever is a book with a mission: to normalize anxiety and leadership. As leadership expert and self-proclaimed anxious achiever Morra Aarons-Mele argues, anxiety is built into the very nature of leadership. It can--and should-be harnessed into a force for good.

In other words, individuals with a high achiever personality need to see the fruits of their labour, and feel appreciated, but they must also feel supported and encouraged to take down time, or accept things which are out of their control. This is essential to avoid burnout in high achiever personalities.

People with a high achiever personality thrive when they understand what the ultimate goal of their work is. The more they have something to strive towards, the better they will perform. This can be either a collective or individual goal, for their own benefit, or that of the organisation as a whole.

The achiever is coffee itself because the combination of relative addictiveness and its mildness on the body (compared to must drugs and alcohol) makes it something people keep buying even when the price goes up.

Goal setting is only one piece of the puzzle that makes an Achiever Leader valuable to an organization. The other piece is the discipline needed on a daily basis to achieve the goals. It is easy to lay out what needs to be done. Usually, it is much more difficult to deliver on those things with the time and resources the organization can afford to invest. Great Achiever Leaders not only define what they aspire to achieve, they actually achieve it within the boundaries or constraints set by the organization. They are by definition high achievers.

One of the big differences is how they see their own role within the organization. The Expert Leader believes they need to lead with their expertise, the achiever leads by setting goals and ensuring that those goals are achieved, whereas the Catalyst focuses primarily on creating the right environment for everyone else to align based on a shared vision and deliver in a self-managed manner.

We all would like both time and money. But this generation appears, at least for now, to place a higher value on time, personal development, and lifestyle than on maximizing income. In addition, many Gen Zers have an aversion to working in the traditional offices that anxious achievers in CEO positions believe is vital to future innovation and success.

Through YMCA Black Achievers, youth gain a sense of self, raise their academic standards, build character, develop cultural competence skills, gain exposure to diverse career opportunities, engage in community service opportunities and receive hands-on service learning and field experiences. A key benefit of Black Achievers is the relationship formed between adult achievers and teen achievers during career cluster workshops.

The world of business is a big place with endless possibilities for our achievers. Young entrepreneurs and future business leaders learn administrative skills, strategies for small business, gain exposure to the world of finance, economics, and the art of supply and demand.

This cluster provides young achievers the opportunity to explore their interest and discover what skills they have. Future trade leaders will gain exposure to education, internship, and apprenticeship opportunities, and will be connected to a network field employer to assist them with their career search. Achievers explore skills they need to develop to meet their goals.

Taking place at the scenic YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in the mountains of Western North Carolina, the National Achievers Summit will provide valuable leadership development, life-enhancing skills and group interaction in a fun and exciting week. Adults will receive program and personal development, while also having opportunities to support and serve their youth achievers. Youth Achievers attending will engage in activities designed to improve academic performance, develop a positive sense of self, build character, explore diverse college and career options and interact with professionals and role models.
