An assimilation into an adopted culture of capitalism. I remember the journey on the Groote Beer and all I wanted was a pair of American blue jeans upon arriving in New York City. There was an abundance of everything. My introduction to capitalism, to the pledge of allegiance, to softball and in my later years, to the entrepreneurial spirit and a unique approach to democracy formed many of my personal philosophy about how to live a life. I learned quickly that I needed to assimilate my Dutch-Indo into the American culture and eventually learned that assimilation comes with a loss of identity, especially when the culture you were born into has dispersed to many corners of the world.

A search for personal history and a serendipitous meeting with Sephardic Jews in Southern California led me to a lifelong search for my Portuguese Dutch-Indo ancestry on the maternal side of the family. I recently came full circle and face to face with a path that took my maternal ancestors to Macau, Borneo and Indonesia beginning in the late 17th century. I recently planted myself in Spain to trace that migration before they landed in the Dutch East Indies. More about this journey of a research into Jews of Indonesia in a future article and how I discovered a variety of hidden Jewish rituals and adaptations of recipes to fit an Indo culture that were embedded into my family culture.

The gaming community in India has recently witnessed a truly remarkable event. With the help of the now-banned popular battle royale game, PUBG Mobile, a couple managed to find love in the virtual realm. What makes this story even more surprising is that their connection blossomed across the border between India and Pakistan.

According to a report from The New York Times, a heartwarming love story unfolded between 27-year-old Seema Ghulam Haider and 22-year-old Sachin Meena while playing PUBG Mobile in 2019 during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the couple faced a significant hurdle before they could progress their relationship. Sachin Meena was a resident of Rabupura in New Delhi, India, and Seema Ghulam Haider was from Pakistan.

However, this challenge did not impede their love story, as the couple found ways to continue their conversations on more personalised platforms, including video calling. Their conversations persisted for several months until they finally decided to meet in person. In January of 2023, they met in Kathmandu, Nepal, and then again in March. It was during this time that both of them realised their desire to spend their lives together, leading to their marriage.

In May 2023, Seema Ghulam Haider made the decision to leave Karachi and join Sachin in India. She packed her bags, along with her four children, and embarked on a challenging journey. In order to enter India without visas, Seema had to overcome numerous obstacles. Her journey began in Karachi, where she flew to Dubai, and from there, she travelled to Kathmandu, Nepal. After spending some time in Kathmandu, Seema took a direct bus to Delhi, managing to bypass several checks due to her status as a single mother travelling with her children.

On the other hand, Sachin's family has wholeheartedly embraced Seema as a part of their family. According to a report by The Quint, Sachin's father admires the courage Seema displayed in crossing the border for the sake of love. Sachin's mother also expresses her desire to proudly share with the villagers that her daughter-in-law hails from across the border. With the family's acceptance and support, Sachin and Seema are now ready to embark on this new journey together and shape their shared future. How do you feel about this remarkable love story that blossomed in the virtual realm?

I love Indonesian food too. When I arrived in Bali after a trek from one end of Java to the other, my daughter was elated to see a KFC. I was furious! But in the end I let her indulge in what she could eat any time back home and then went for a nazi goreng for myself afterwards.

This would be a lovely recipe to use up leftover rice. Based on your preference you could use any kind of rice you have in hand. I used Basmati rice for this recipe, but I also make it at times using brown rice.

The best way to use leftover rice when making Indo Chinese khana is always a good idea.

We call it fried Rice. The pics look so tempting as this goes very well with Manchurian.

I made this combo yesterday for dinner as my kids love this.

The long journey starts from gorgeous Mount Bromo and across East Java until island-hopping to Bali by ferry, then another ferry to the island of Lombok. Travelling in Indonesia in 1998 is challenging at the best of times and can be frustrating.

The bus from Negara to Denpasar is only a 3-hour journey. Of course today, everything that can go wrong does go wrong. Only an hour into the trip, the bus gets two flat tyres but is only carrying one spare tyre. After waiting 2 hours for the second spare to arrive, the bus is fixed and we are on our way again.

With an official launch in 2009, Indosole sandals were handcrafted with love using an organic process with motorbike tires as soles right here in Bali. The supply chain was wholly local and with the lowest carbon footprint.

She spent four months in Italy, eating and enjoying life ("Eat"). She spent three months in India, finding her spirituality ("Pray").[7] She ended the year in Bali, Indonesia, looking for "balance" of the two and fell in love with a Brazilian businessman ("Love"), whom she later married and divorced.[8]

Katie Roiphe of Slate agreed with Egan about the strength of Gilbert's writing. However, she described the journey as too fake: "too willed, too self-conscious." She stated that given the apparent artificiality of the journey, her "affection for Eat, Pray, Love is ... furtive" but that "it is a transcendently great beach book."[13] The Washington Post's Grace Lichtenstein stated that "the only thing wrong with this readable, funny memoir of a magazine writer's yearlong travels across the world in search of pleasure and balance is that it seems so much like a Jennifer Aniston movie."[8]

Entertainment Weekly's Jessica Shaw said that "despite a few cringe-worthy turns ... Gilbert's journey is well worth taking."[16] Don Lattin of the San Francisco Chronicle agreed with Egan that the story was weakest while she was in India and questioned the complete veracity of the book.[17] Barbara Fisher of The Boston Globe also praised Gilbert's writing, stating that "she describes with intense visual, palpable detail. She is the epic poet of ecstasy."[18]

Look at these guys! Am I going too much off stage? The Internet is empty when it comes to find some informations about these bands. Or else, alternative music in Indonesia is as little popular as in most of the world. Anyhow, I love what these guys do.

The Bee is a nature lover and tea addict. Loves the idea of slow life and responsible traveling, constantly trying to improve to bee more eco-friendly. Appreciates old cultures and traditions, loves to immerse with locals, listen to ethnic music as well as taste regional food and drinks. Her favorite spots while traveling are family houses and street markets.

It sounds like such a simple question, but after talking to so many people who have dreamed of writing for years, I have realized that this is actually one of the most daunting questions in the world. You want to be a success, but what if the genre you love most is not the most popular genre? What if no one wants to read your story?

As I saw it, that was really the only way I was going to get through 50,000 words in a month. If I was going to do it and be successful, I was going to have to write something I loved. Something just for me.

There was lots of mystery. Supernatural elements. And a really great romance between my main character and a young police officer. It was all the things I loved and wanted in a story, and I had the time of my life writing it.

Then, I waited. My first official rejection letter came in the mail the day my fiance and I were leaving to get married in Vegas. I was devastated by the rejection, even though it did come with a nice note saying she loved my writing style but that the story had too much subplot for her line.

My journey to Beautiful Demons, my first publishing Young Adult novel, was still a winding road, but that moment at Panera with my good friend was the moment I finally gave myself permission to follow my own heart and write what I truly wanted to write.

But sometimes, I think the desire to make a living at this writing business can pull us in two directions. What if the genre we love most is not the most popular? What if people have told us taking another direction would be better? Or easier? Or faster?
