50FOOTWAVE is an American alternative rock band, formed in 2003. The band is fronted by Kristin Hersh, who writes the group's songs with collaborative efforts from the other group members in composing and arranging the music. The group's name is a reference to both an illustration and the term for the 50-foot sound wave of the lowest F tone audible to the human ear. The band sometimes abbreviates its name as L'~, using the Roman numeral for 50.

100 Foot Wave is an American documentary television series directed by Chris Smith, revolving around big-wave surfer Garrett McNamara as he traveled to Nazar, Portugal with the goal of conquering a 100-foot wave. It premiered on HBO on July 18, 2021.[1][2]

McNamara's career as a big-wave surfer is chronicled. The series focuses on his time in Nazar, where he hopes to find and conquer a 100-foot wave. He works alongside Nazar locals to transform the town into a surfing destination known for its immense waves. Other big-wave surfers are also profiled.

Have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this limited series which looks at the life of big wave surfer Garrett McNamara and his big-wave brotherhood of surfing lunatics, upon finding the nirvana of big wave surfing in Nazar Portugal, and their obsessive (and sometimes lifelong) quest for finding and surfing the elusive 100 foot wave.

The premium cable network has handed out a second season renewal for 100 Foot Wave, the six-episode docuseries that follows Garrett and Nicole McNamara in their pursuit of catching the epic wave in Nazare.

We started filming about two years ago. Something we came to learn is that surfers document their lives quite extensively. So, we were able to access a lot of footage that had chronicled his experiences over the years. From that we were able to make something that was bigger in scope than we originally intended.

In October of 2020 professional surfer Kai Lenny traveled to Nazare Portugal for the landfall of tropical storm Zeta and documented 60 to 100 foot waves with a handheld GoPro camera. He made several waves without falling, but the wave he didn't make sort of stuck with me. In the video below you can see from both a POV and shore view angle what it looks like to have a mountain of water crash on your head. For perspective, SurferToday.com calculates that the weight of an 80 foot wave crashing on you is equivalent to the pressure of 12g's or the weight of 600 Volkswagen Beetles. For more perspective, normal humans blackout after a few seconds of sustained pressures of 6-8 g's.

We're ALREADY TWO MONTHS into 2021, and the waves of change keep rolling in. My plan for 2021 is to control the controllable. Plan for best, and be prepared for the worst. Have an attitude that my response is controlled by me and that attitude will positively affect outcomes. Be grateful for my support network who is there to pick me up when I fall. Most people in business right now have a 2021 plan for what they want to happen....who amongst you has put the same amount of planning into what happens when you need backup? I'd love to hear from any and all of you what you learned about responding to adversity in 2020.

One week later, a surfing ban was put into effect, a prohibition that lasted six weeks and emptied Nazar of many of its surfers who flock there in the colder months to catch waves that grow to reach the height of tall buildings. Even Nazar pioneer Garrett left.

"I would never be in this position if it wasn't for all the big wave surfers who have come before me and paved the way, especially the really brave, courageous females who have always inspired me and made me feel like I could get out there and give it a crack," Enever said.

Michael Prickett: First thing we look for is a high-resolution body that has all the I/O we need built in and it must have a small footprint. We want a comfortable to operate camera package that is easy to pick up quickly, power up, and shoot with at a moment's notice.

Prickett: We were excited to film in a more cinematic way. We wanted to bring other worldly shots of monstrous waves crashing just feet away from the public. We had to overcome some incredible lighting situations.

At Nazare, you're filming in super low contrast fog in the morning and before you know it the sun is out and the shadow that the wave casts is dropping way under any reasonable exposure. It's a constant struggle.

I made a movie called Chasing Mavericks with Gerard Butler. The 100 Foot Wave director and producers liked it and contacted me. Also I grew up with Garrett McNamara, the star of 100 Foot Wave so I actually had a bunch of archival footage of him.

McNamara, 45, of Hawaii, was filmed on Monday surfing what appears to be a 100-foot wave off Nazar, Portugal, the same location where, in 2011, he broke the record for surfing the biggest wave ever ridden.

The wave will have to be verified by Guinness World Records officials. McNamara's 2011 wave was initially thought to be 90-feet but was later verified through photos and videos to be 77.7559 feet high.

The show branches out from surfing to show the culture surrounding it. From local lore to crowded lineups and drone operators, in what ways does 100 Foot Wave highlight the historic fishing town of Nazar and the culture that has emerged out of surfing its now-iconic wave?

The source of this problem is the two opposing methods that surfers use to measure waves. The Hawaiian method measures a wave in the same way that a wave size is determined in Science. The amplitude of a wave is the measure of a wave from its resting position to the peak of the wave. So, in our case the horizontal line in the diagram is sea level. This is the resting point. As an observer of a wave in the sea we could measure the amplitude by viewing the wave from behind. Or as an observer from the shore you could half the size of the wave face. So, we could say that a wave with a 6 ft face would be 3ft using the Hawaiian scale.

In 1964 Willard Bascom introduced an opposing method. This required the observer to assigning a wave height based on the size of the wave face (from the front). As with the Hawaiian method, this can be most effectively measured if there is a surfer riding the wave.

Synopsis: 100 FOOT WAVE returns to Nazar, Portugal - with stops in Hawaii and California - for a heart-pounding and adrenaline-filled second season following big wave legend Garrett McNamara, his world-class surfing peers, and some surprising newcomers as they continue to push the boundaries of their sport and the limits of their minds and bodies. As much a story of personal relationships, longing, fear, and love, the series spans the '20/'21 and '21/'22 big wave seasons which began with the uncertainties of life under COVID-19 and ended with some of the largest swells of the surfers' careers. The one constant for these extreme athletes is contending with the highs and lows of their perilous and unpredictable lifestyle in which every big wave has the potential to write a dramatic new chapter in their personal stories. With a mix of intimate interviews, verit scenes and personal archive, as well as stunning aerial, water-based and underwater footage from the Emmy(R)-winning cinematography team, the series captures a world unlike any other. A decade after McNamara conquered his first record-breaking wave in 2011, the small coastal town of Nazar, with its dramatic cliffs and epic offshore breaks, continues to attract the best big wave surfers in the world, who rely on the powerful but indifferent ocean to help them realize their dreams while avoiding mortal injury. McNamara, expecting the birth of his third child with wife Nicole - which proves to be its own unexpected challenge - embraces a new direction in his career while still heeding the pull of the ocean.
