The song also peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot Black Singles chart[6] and number seven on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart.[4] It hit number one in Australia and stayed there for 7 weeks.[7] It was also a hit in the United Kingdom, reaching number two during its fifth week on the UK Singles Chart.[8] In Canada, the song reached number one in its eighth week.[9] One critic noted it as a "formula for facing life's trials".[10]
The "instruments" in the a cappella song are entirely overdubbed voice parts and other sounds made by McFerrin, using no instruments at all; McFerrin also sings with an affected accent, though he stated that "I hate to go so far as to say it's Jamaican. Kieran McCarthy of AllMusic expected that the song would "probably remain prevalent in pop culture as long as humans speak English and play music."[18] Pan-European magazine Music & Media picked it as Single of the Week, writing "Cool a capella by this unusual artist. Uncomplicated music stripped down to the basics, but missing absolutely nothing. This recording will appeal to everybody who is on the lookout for something different. With the reggae-style vocals and a snappy rhythm, this Linda Goldstein produced US top 10 single is a novelty record of considerable substance."[19]

In late 1988, television station WTVJ (channel 4) in Miami, Florida, commissioned McFerrin to record a customized version of the song with lyrics promoting WTVJ's switch from CBS to NBC on January 1, 1989, as part of a complicated six-station affiliation shuffle in South Florida.[27][28] The station's usage of the song was so infamous that when WTVJ's general manager resigned in 1993, South Florida Sun-Sentinel critic Tom Jicha wrote "The 'don't worry, be happy' era is officially over at WTVJ ... Practically speaking, it was over as soon as it started. The jingle ... never reflected reality ... there has been little to smile about and plenty to fret over."[29]
The song was used in George H. W. Bush's 1988 U.S. presidential election as Bush's 1988 official presidential campaign song, and it was used without Bobby McFerrin's permission or endorsement. In reaction, McFerrin (a Democrat) publicly protested that particular use of his song, including stating that he was going to vote against Bush, and he completely dropped the song from his own performance repertoire to make the point even clearer. The Bush campaign then reportedly desisted from use of the song.[71]

Close to beach, we loved having the pool in the back yard, spacious accommodations. Plenty of dishes, utensils and cookware. Large refrigerator. Washer/Dryer. Wonderful view of beach. Close to stores and restaurants.
The house Don't worry beach happy was more than what we imagined it would be! Everyone enjoyed and loved the house , The best house and best vacation I had ! Looking forward to staying at the house again
We liked this house and plan on returning next year. Just needs some cosmetic updating. Paint, new area rug in main room, and flooring in kitchen would help a lot. Also the furniture in the main room needs a good cleaning and the couches replaced. I was concerned about the amount of pet hair we swept up in the main room. This could be a housekeeping issue. There was easy access to the beach. Floor plan was great for small children that need a nap. We put our new grand baby in an upstairs bedroom with his parents and he took great naps because he could not hear the activity on the lower floor. Beds were comfortable. Kitchen was big and easy to work in. There was enough seating for 10 if you used the bar. Could use some serving bowls and a muffin pan. We had one Pyrex 8x8 dish and that was it for baking supplies. There was plenty of nice dinnerwear and silverware was plentiful. We borrowed a muffin pan from a relative in Southport. Pool was a welcome addition as the children enjoyed it after the beach. Parking was plentiful and the area of the beach was quiet and the runners in the family said that the route to run was good.
According to what I read, Bobby walked into a friend's house and on the wall was a photo of Meher Baba and his wonderful quote: Don't worry, be happy. It inspired McFerrin to write this wonderful song, but too rarely does the quote get its proper attribution.

On the front don't worry , be happy but in order to be really happy the more of us had better educate themselves on the real world that our major media covers with such a pablum patois. Don't stew and worry but stand up and challenge the aspects of the world that are designed to create imbalance and usury, designed for profit over human health and well being. The orientation of an entire culture has gone awry and taking care of the self and close friends will not undo the damage that we enabled under bad premises and false beliefs. Socially unjust practices in the USA and elsewhere will continue damaging the earth and her creatures unless we choose to engage in the work with our neighbors and strangers , to teach and learn as much and as fast as possible.
