"Like Kickstarter, but for everything"

Let's say you want to live in an off-grid crypto-village in nature with close friends and cheap cost of living. Sounds great, right?

There's a problem with this.

No one's gonna want to join a damn remote village unless their friends already live there. People go where the social capital is and get locked into their local incentives. This is why we have San Francisco instead of nice things.

It doesn't have to be this way.

Enter assurance contracts. These are agreements of the form, "I will do X, but if and only if Y other people are also guaranteed to do it." This assures the prospective signer that the other signers will do what they say they will do.

This already exists with crowdfunding. You give money in exchange for the video game, if and only if it raises a certain amount of money. If it fails to reach its goal, you get a refund.

But there are many other uses cases for this. It doesn't have to be money people are committing. They can commit to move to our new village if and only if 99 other people also commit to move to this village.

Other potential examples include:

  • buying and moving into a group mansion across the country that costs less per-person than your one-bedroom apartment does right now

  • making a book club or study group so you're more likely to actually finish it

  • making a coworking group so you're less lonely doing remote work

  • making sure your Zoom event has attendees and you don't cringe at your own lack of popularity

  • building a team to work on a technical project, making it more likely to succeed

  • going on a group camping trip to bond with your friends in nature

  • ensuring all members of your school's group project commit to working on it so you don't spend all night filled with resentment

  • simultaneous crowd-tweeting to market your startup

  • switching your Facebook Group to Urbit

  • making a Discord server with a guaranteed minimum population

Below is an example.
