The document scanner is an OnSong Premium feature that lets you use your device's camera to import songs into your OnSong library. You simply line up the camera with pages on a table or music stand. The document scanner finds rectangles that look like paper and snap the shot. It automatically perspective corrects your pages.

The document scanner is available in OnSong 2020.0 and requires iOS/iPadOS 13 or higher because of the advanced computer vision that is being used. You'll also need to have OnSong Premium to use this feature.

This guide demonstrates creating and deploying a production ready document scanning application. It allows users to manage projects, upload images, and generate a PDF from detected text. The sample can be used as a template for building expense tracking applications, handling forms and legal documents, or for digitizing books and notes.

Two DynamoDB tables are created. A Project table, which tracks all the project names by user, and a Pages table, which tracks pages by project and user. The DynamoDB tables are created by the AWS SAM template with the partition key and range key defined for each table. These are used by the Lambda functions to query and sort items. Portable document scanners are simple devices: They scan documents and deliver digital files. But there are a few boxes they need to check in order to be worth your time and money, so we prioritized these qualities when surveying the available models.

To begin, we unboxed each scanner, taking notes on their size, weight, and build quality. Did the plastics seem thick and durable? Were the ADF guides sturdy when extended? Did the feeder tray latch solidly when we folded it down for storage? We also checked to see whether the manufacturer bothered to include a USB cable or other extras in the box.

To test scan speed, we ran a 20-sheet double-sided business document through each scanner using both simplex and duplex modes, over both USB and (except in the case of the Epson ES-200) Wi-Fi, and at both 300 dpi and 600 dpi resolution. In each case, we recorded how long the scan job took to complete, from pressing the Scan button until the results were ready to be saved.

Most document scanners are rated for everything from flimsy copy paper to heavy card stock, but we fed each machine a variety of paper types to make sure it could handle them. We also intentionally jammed each scanner just to see how easy or difficult it was to clear.

Finally, we ran a series of tests to gauge the effect that different power sources had on scanner performance. For instance, we attempted to quantify the effect that scanning via USB power had on laptop battery life, and also to see whether scanning slowed noticeably on USB power. We also checked to see if the machines would operate using a USB battery pack as a power source.

In addition to scanning to a computer and mobile devices, the ADS-1250W can scan to a USB thumb drive (the scanner has a port on the back side). If you need additional scan-to options, such as FTP and network folders, consider the otherwise similar Brother ADS-1700W.

During testing it was one of the fastest scanners (tied with the Epson ES-60W). It scanned one-sided documents to a computer in .06 second and both sides (which the Epson cannot do) in .08 second. When connected to the iPrint&Scan app on mobile, duplex scan speeds were surprisingly faster, ready for viewing in .07 second (single-sided scans were still .06 second).

Scanners like this are great because they can bring your old photos into the digital age and save you from the mind-numbing labor of manually scanning each one with a flatbed scanner. With its automatic feeder, the FF-680W can handle batches of up to 36 photos, and it accepts photos ranging from wallet-size to 5 by 7 inches. If you feed them one at a time, it can also handle 8-by-10-inch shots and up to 8.5-by-36-inch panoramas. It also captures the handwritten notes on the backside of photos in a single pass.

Place the document(s) on a flat surface, in a well-lit area. Open the Notes app and either create a new note or open an existing note. I created a folder called Scanned Documents where I can store and easily find anything I've scanned.

Your iPhone or iPad will open the camera, complete with a shutter button near the bottom of the screen. Don't push it yet; instead, follow the prompts on your screen. To get the best results, hold your device directly above the document.

A yellow box will appear as the camera begins scanning and looking for the document. You'll see tips like "get closer" as your device looks for the edges and corners of the paper. Once it identifies the entire document, it will automatically capture a scan. If your iPhone is struggling to find the document, you can press the shutter button.

Tap on the document to open it, and you'll find all of the editing tools along the bottom of the screen. Use the crop tool to adjust the corners or cut out a section of the document if you don't want that information included.

I've found the easiest way to use the crop tool is to place your finger near the small circle located on each corner of the document, each one doubling as a magnifying glass. That will give you a better view of your adjustments instead of covering them up.

To bring up the share sheet when viewing a document, tap the share button in the top-right corner of the screen. To add your signature, scroll below the app shortcuts and tap Markup. The markup tool has tools to draw, write or add text or add your signature. Tap on the "+" sign to see all of the tools options.
