In 1991, Serhii Serik had graduated from the Kharkiv Medical Institute with honors with specialty “General medicine”. From 1991 to 1983 he was trained in clinical residency in the specialty “Cardilogy” at the Institute of Therapy. In 2000, he defended his candidate's thesis in the specialty "Cardiology" on the topic “System changes of humoral immunity, cytokines and endothelium function in ischemic heart disease”. In 2003, the decision of the Higher Attestation Commission of Ukraine conferred the academic title of Senior Researcher to S. Serik. In 2013, he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences in the specialty "Internal Diseases" on the topic “Immunoinflammatory activation in patients with heart failure caused by ischemic heart disease and its combination with diabetes mellitus.” 

S.Serik has the highest certification category in the specialty "Cardiology". 

After clinical residency in 1993 Serhii Serik was hired as a junior researcher in the immunology sector of the Institute of Therapy. In 1996, he was transferred to the position of a researcher in the Department of Biochemistry. Since 2004 he worked as a senior researcher in the Department of Biochemical, Immunoenzymatic and Radioimmunological Research Methods. In January 2004, he was transferred to the position of a senior researcher in the Department of Atherosclerosis and Ischemic Heart Disease. Since 2014 S. Serik is the head of the Department of Atherosclerosis and Coronary Heart Disease (since 2021 - the Department of Coronary Heart Disease, Metabolic and Cardiopulmonary Disorders). 

The main directions of scientific research are immunoinflammatory mechanisms in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and heart failure; pathogenetic features of coronary artery disease in type 2 diabetes; the role of epigenetic mechanisms (circulating miRNAs, long non-coding RNAs) in the control of metabolic and inflammatory factors of atherogenesis in coronary artery disease and its combination with type 2 diabetes; the significance of non-coding RNAs in the mediating of atheroprotective, anti-inflammatory effects of statins and hypoglycemic agents.

Under the supervision of S. Serik two theses for obtaining the scientific degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences have been defended.

Member of the Presidium of the Board of the Ukrainian Association of Preventive Medicine, a member of the Association of Cardiologists of Ukraine, the European Society of Cardiology, a member of the European Society of Atherosclerosis.

Member of the editorial board of the "Ukrainian Therapeutic Journal".
