M-iti Doctoral Symposium

Event

The Doctoral Symposium aims to gather together the PhD students from the Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute (M-iti) with the ultimate goal of presenting their research proposals, advances and preliminary results. This unique experience promoted by the students intends to boost the interaction between the researchers from different programs cohabiting in the institute, reinforcing the sense of belonging and improving the collaboration. Thus, attempting to create a real doctoral community in the beautiful pearl of the Atlantic.

Methodology and Venue

Students are encouraged to present their research proposals to the community in a 20 minutes presentation. An evaluation panel consisting of at least one senior professor and one post-doc will be providing valuable feedback aiming at improve the research work. Moreover, during the breaks the students will have the opportunity to present their posters to the assistants.

The M-iti Doctoral Symposium will take place in the "Museu de Imprensa da Madeira" located in the colorful fisherman's village of Câmara de Lobos.

Harold Thimbleby

Is professor of computer science at Swansea University, Wales. Harold wrote the book Press On, which won the American Publishers’ Association best book award in computer science.

Harold believes strongly that public understanding and awareness of technology and the science behind it is crucial for us to benefit from it to the full. He is an ACM Distinguished Speaker.

His passion is designing dependable systems to accommodate human error, especially in healthcare. See CHI+MED: Multidisciplinary Computer-Human Interaction research for the design and safe use of interactive medical devices for a major project he’s been on. See for some of his recent work in healthcare IT.

Harold is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh, the Institute of Engineering Technology, the Learned Society of Wales, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
