Astronomy is a science with a long history, and until now mankind has been challenging the mysteries of the universe by refining both observational data and theoretical models. Conventional astronomical research has mainly used physics-based elementalization and approximations to elucidate the laws of the universe and the properties of celestial objects behind observational data. This approach allows us to intuitively understand various astronomical phenomena through physical models.

In recent years, however, the amount of astronomical data has exploded and the accuracy of the data has improved by orders of magnitude. With the advent of such large-scale, high-precision data, we are beginning to see the limits of conventional methods. For example, it has already reached a level where it is impossible for humans to visually check all astronomical data. In addition, theoretical models assembled on the basis of simplified physical processes cannot explain the characteristics of some high-precision observational data. In response to this trend, there is an increasing need in astronomy to efficiently analyze data in realistic computation time using a data science approach.

Although it is still difficult to understand observational data intuitively by purely using data science methods as in the past, new discoveries may be made by data science methods in a way that is not limited by the prejudices of astronomers and physicists. The fusion of data science and astronomy is very attractive. The purpose of this workshop is to focus on how astronomical data obtained from observations and numerical experiments can be analyzed using data science approaches, and to provide a forum for discussing in which situations data science approaches can be useful for astronomical research.
