Do I Need Special Underwear for Working Out?

When you work out, you're not just hanging out at the gym. You're moving, twisting, running, lifting, and sweating- a lot! This leads to the question… should you be wearing any type of special underwear? After all, that much sweat and moisture can't be good for the body parts your underwear is covering up. You put deodorant under your armpits. Should you be doing something special for these parts, too?

For Men

First and foremost, when you exercise, go for a breathable pair of underwear made of absorbent material since your body will produce a lot of moisture while you move. A Modal and Spandex fabric blend is cool to the touch and going to provide the absorption you need for all that sweat. They make options, like running boxer shorts, geared toward specific workouts.

Also, give thought to your bulge. What you're looking for is a "dual pouch." This means you have two separate compartments for maximum support and performance. It feels as if the family jewels are being treated like royalty, as they are given their own private sanctum, keeping them secure and you in a state of total focus on your workout ahead.

For Women

It is recommended that you wear specific underwear for working out. Your everyday underwear may not be ideal for fitness. You're going to be more than just "moist," you are going to be really sweaty! Wearing something between you and the fabric of your yoga pants is typically going to be more comfortable. Also, your workout underwear should be a high-tech polyester material that’s light and slick.

In addition, watch out for elastic in the groin or lace in all the wrong places. This can cause irritation, rashes, itching, and discomfort particularly with more intense physical activity. Save the frilly stuff for after you've showered!

A Quick Word About Washing

Wash your underwear carefully, especially after working out! All types of underwear should be washed gently, not just your special stuff. There is a reason they’re called your “delicates!” This includes the special sports boxer briefs or other underwear you bought specifically to workout in. They need to be washed very carefully because they sit up against your more sensitive skin area for long periods of time. Experts recommend using gentle, hypoallergenic soap. Anything too soapy or made with harsh chemicals can lead to irritation, itching, and uncomfortable allergic reactions. You'll want to wash them on a delicate, cold cycle. Dry them on a low heat tumble or line dry for the longest lasting underwear possible.

If you need more cleaning power, experts say that you can use vinegar for it's disinfecting properties. Wash your underwear in one delicate cold vinegar cycle and then a delicate cold detergent cycle for the maximum results.

Don't let the wrong underwear ruin your workout! Wearing sports boxer briefs or another type of specially-made underwear means you can run longer, lift heavier, and sweat longer. Your fitness goals will be met in no time!
