Daniel Gauthier

Hello and welcome! I am a Professor of Physics at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, USA, a great place to live, teach, and do research. I moved to OSU on January 1, 2016. Previously, I was the Robert C. Richardson Professor in the Department of Physics a Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, USA. I have a wide variety of research interests including quantum computing, quantum key distribution, and dynamics of complex networks. The photo above was taken by a Duke photographer as the lead-in for the Sep/Oct 2009 edition of the Duke Magazine on my complex networks research. I teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in quantum information, optics, and experimental physics. I get to work with a fantastic group of students and post-doctoral research associates who collaborate with me on research and do all the hard work that keeps my lab running.

When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my family: my spouse, Natasha Bowen, who is a Professor of Social Work at The Ohio State University, and my son, Leo Gauthier, who graduated from Duke University in 2013 with a major in psychology and is currently living in Kaohsiung, Taiwan teaching English, and my parents, Leonard and Mona Gauthier, who live in Durham, North Carolina, and my wife's extended family who lives in several places around the United States. Natasha is a proverbial "cat lady," and I enjoy the creatures too. We now have five cats, although two are mostly banished to the outside because they keep trying to mark territory inside the house. I also enjoy a few other activities, such as traveling, making beer, rock climbing, and driving my BMW M4 around the countryside. I tried my hand at sailing with a local sailing club on one of the Columbus lakes in 2016, but found the traffic getting there after work a bit challenging. Maybe more in retirement when my schedule is not so constrained!
