If you want professional studio isolation and heavy-duty monitoring for a hunting environment where silence is critical, choose Direct Sound DS-74; if you need a lightweight, high-fidelity audio experience with a natural soundstage for detailed listening while on the move, choose TANGZU HE Xiao Qiao.
• Direct Sound DS-74: Offers massive 1600mW power handling and complete sound isolation via its closed-back design, making it ideal for blocking out wind and machinery noise during hunting trips or studio tracking sessions.
• TANGZU HE Xiao Qiao: Delivers a spacious, open soundstage with a semi-open back design and ultra-lightweight CNC aluminum build, perfect for hikers who prioritize comfort and natural sound over total noise cancellation.
• The Verdict: The DS-74 is the choice for those who need to shut the world out completely, while the HE Xiao Qiao suits listeners who want an immersive, airy audio presentation without the weight of over-ear cups.
The Direct Sound DS-74 is built for the purist who demands absolute control over their audio environment. This is not a casual pair of headphones; it is a piece of professional monitoring gear designed with a closed-back circumaural structure that creates a physical barrier against external sound. When you are in the field, perhaps sitting still in a blind or driving a vehicle, the ability to isolate yourself from the ambient noise of the forest or the engine hum is invaluable. The large 50mm dynamic drivers are engineered to push a maximum output power of 1600mW, ensuring that even subtle details in your audio—whether it is a recording session or a game call—are reproduced with authority and clarity.
The frequency response spans from 10Hz to 30KHz, giving this unit a very wide range that captures both the deep rumble of bass and the airy highs that often get lost in cheaper gear. Because of the closed-back enclosure, these headphones prevent audio bleed, which is a critical feature if you ever find yourself using them in a situation where you might be recording nearby sounds or if you simply want to ensure your music does not disturb others around you. The over-ear cups, made from plastic and polyurethane, wrap securely around the ears, providing a seal that is essential for effective passive noise cancellation.

However, this level of isolation comes with a trade-off. The design prioritizes sealing out the world over creating an "open" feeling. If you are looking for a headset that feels like you are inside a concert hall with air moving through the speakers, this isn't it. Instead, it offers a focused, intimate listening bubble. The weight of the unit is 1.2 pounds, which is substantial compared to in-ear monitors. While this adds a sense of durability and robustness, it means they are heavier to wear for extended periods. This makes the DS-74 best suited for stationary activities or shorter bursts of intense listening where you can rest your head. It is the definitive tool for someone who needs to hear every nuance of a mix or every detail of a game call without any distraction from the outside world.
In contrast, the TANGZU HE Xiao Qiao takes a completely different approach, focusing on aerodynamic precision and acoustic transparency. These in-ear monitors are designed with a semi-open back structure, which allows the single 10mm graphene diaphragm driver to breathe. This architectural choice fundamentally changes how sound behaves; instead of being trapped and sealed, the sound waves interact with the air in a way that creates a naturally expansive soundstage. For anyone who values lifelike imaging and immersive depth, this open design provides a sense of space that closed-back headphones simply cannot replicate. The graphene diaphragm is extremely rigid yet light, allowing for tight bass control and crisp highs without the phase issues that sometimes plague multi-driver systems.
The construction of the HE Xiao Qiao is nothing short of aerospace-grade engineering. The earpieces feature a 5-axis CNC-machined aluminum alloy panel that offers superior strength while keeping the overall weight incredibly low. Combined with nanometer-precise resin printing for the internal acoustic chambers, the result is a device that feels like a piece of jewelry rather than a piece of tech. The inclusion of a Furukawa silver-copper alloy wire ensures that the signal transmission remains clean and reliable, supporting the 20Hz to 20KHz frequency range with fidelity. This product is tailored for users who value the purity of a single dynamic driver and the mechanical beauty of the hardware itself.
Because these are in-ear monitors, they are inherently more portable and less obtrusive than the DS-74. They rely on passive noise cancellation achieved through the fit of the ear tips rather than a physical seal around the ear cup. This makes them excellent for active use, such as hiking or moving through terrain, where you might need to remain aware of your surroundings while enjoying high-quality audio. However, the semi-open nature means they do not block out external noise as effectively as the DS-74. If you are in a loud environment, the open back will let some ambient sound in, blending it with your music. This makes them less suitable for total isolation but perfect for those who want a balanced, natural sound profile without the pressure of a sealed ear cup.
• Best for battery life and long-term wear → Neither has batteries (both wired), but the Direct Sound DS-74 offers better thermal management for long sessions due to its over-ear ventilation, whereas the TANGZU HE Xiao Qiao is lighter and less fatiguing for movement.
• Best for total noise isolation → Direct Sound DS-74 wins hands down with its closed-back circumaural design, creating a seal that blocks wind and machinery noise effectively.
• Best for soundstage and spatial awareness → TANGZU HE Xiao Qiao excels here with its semi-open back design, offering a wider, more natural imaging experience.
• Best for durability and ruggedness → Direct Sound DS-74 uses plastic and PU materials designed for studio durability, while TANGZU HE Xiao Qiao uses aerospace-grade aluminum, offering a different kind of premium resilience.
• Best for portability and discretion → TANGZU HE Xiao Qiao is a tiny in-ear monitor that fits easily in a pocket, unlike the bulky over-ear DS-74.
• Best for deep bass impact → Direct Sound DS-74 utilizes 50mm drivers with 1600mW max power, capable of producing much deeper, more physical bass than the 10mm driver in the HE Xiao Qiao.
• Best for hunting scenarios requiring stealth → Direct Sound DS-74 is the logical choice for a hunter needing to block out all environmental noise to focus on game calls or communication.
• Best for value in material quality → TANGZU HE Xiao Qiao offers a unique combination of CNC aluminum and graphene technology at a price point that reflects its high-end component selection.
After analyzing the specifications and design philosophies of both units, I would personally choose the Direct Sound DS-74 for hunting purposes. The primary reason is the necessity of isolation. When you are out in the wild, whether tracking game or setting up for a hunt, the ability to shut out the wind, rustling leaves, and distant traffic is paramount. The closed-back design of the DS-74 provides that crucial barrier, ensuring that your audio remains clear and undisturbed. The 50mm drivers deliver the punchy bass and broad frequency range needed to detect subtle movements or calls, and the 1600mW power handling ensures the sound stays clean even at higher volumes. While the TANGZU HE Xiao Qiao is a marvel of engineering with its aluminum shell and open soundstage, the semi-open design lets too much ambient noise in for a serious hunting application. For a dedicated best in ear headphones for hunting setup that prioritizes focus and immersion, the DS-74 is the superior tool.
Yes, the Direct Sound DS-74 is specifically designed with a closed-back circumaural structure that provides significant sound isolation, making it highly effective at blocking out wind and environmental noise compared to the semi-open TANGZU model.
With an impedance of 20 ohms and a single dynamic driver, the TANGZU HE Xiao Qiao is generally easy to drive and can work well with standard devices, though high-quality sources will help maximize the graphene diaphragm's performance.
The Direct Sound DS-74 offers a focused, intimate sound stage due to its closed-back design, while the TANGZU HE Xiao Qiao provides a more expansive, airy sound stage because of its semi-open back architecture.
The TANGZU HE Xiao Qiao is better for situational awareness because its semi-open design allows ambient sounds to enter naturally, whereas the DS-74 is designed to seal you off from the outside world.
