Hey movie fans! As you might know, Hollywood is a slight mess right now. You’re familiar with an organization called the Writer’s Guild of America right? They’re the ones who represent the writers in ur favourite movies, the TV shows that make your life awesome, and basically all other media. Right now, the WGA finds itself in between a strike due to ongoing issues with Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Usually, they meet with AMPTP for legal shenanigans every three years, but this time, they were like, "Nah, we're not taking any chances!" So, they decided to strike in order to exert some pressure on the producers in case they aren’t able to strike a fair deal before their current contract expires on May 1, 2023. But damn, the AMPTP people really don’t care much, and their refusal to address the situation just made stuff worse, leading to what basically is a stalemate.
As if the issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic weren’t enough, the WGA and AMPTP’s contract issues are causing more problems for American film-making and TV production. They just can’t catch a break! And so began the strike from May 2, 2023, due to the WGA’s inability to find common ground with Hollywood producers for a new contract and fairer wages, among other things they’ve listed. WGA claims that because the large corporations were interfering with their income and way of life at work, this strike was their only option. AMPTP, you're not cool.
And here’s the plot twist, or at least the best we’ll get till the strike ends, the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) is supporting the strike too. This means that any WGA writer hired for a film or TV show will not work until this mess gets sorted out. Consequently, beloved shows, such as “Stranger Things” and “Cobra Kai,” will also be affected, truly showing the stakes involved here and the strike’s significance. We’ll just have to wait for the strike’s resolution to see what’s next in Hawkins.
So what can u do to help? If u r interested in showing ur support for the talented writers behind ur favorite films and shows, there r several ways u can get involved. Writers r the heart, soul, and body of the entertainment industry. With them on strike, u can anticipate all of ur favorite Hollywood movie franchises and shows to be put on hold for a while.
