This ceramic vessel is estimated by Per Widerström (2025-11-18), an archeologist working in the Gotland Museum, to be contemporary with the Roman Iron Age and was discovered during a cover ditch in Lau Backar. The vessel is decorated with stamps as well as angled and horizontal lines and is in very good condition (Gotlands museum 2023). Unfortunately, any further information about the vessel is scarce, which is not always unusual when it comes to archaeological objects, especially when the object has not been found during an excavation or has been analyzed further. The location where the vessel was discovered, Lau Backar here on Gotland, has, however, been further investigated through a number of excavations and it is rich in finds. Excavations and investigations have taken place sporadically since the early 1900s until the mid-1950s, and were then further investigated during the early 1990s, 2008 and 2012. Finds from the previous excavations and investigations include: buckles, jewelry, swords, glass goblets, shield dents, a picture stone and various bronze objects (Widerström 2008). Many of the finds were found in connection with graves and it is safe to say that the history of Lau Backar is rich and can offer us a great insight of the lives of the people of Gotlands past.
