Digital Earth Art® – Human Archive Specification / Fixed Edition
Definition
Digital Earth Art® is a form of digital art in which a human portrait and the image of the Earth are fused inseparably through digital technology.
It is simultaneously the name of a collective entity and a registered artistic concept.
This practice does not belong to environmental art as a genre, nor to eco-art understood as social messaging.
Digital Earth Art® comes into existence only under conditions unique to digital environments, where the very conditions by which “environment” is constituted are made operative.
The portrait and the Earth are not joined symbolically.
They are fused as a visual structure.
Through this fusion, a condition is produced in which the viewer cannot maintain the position of an observing subject.
The viewer cannot stand on the side of understanding the environment, nor on the side of objectifying the Earth.
What arises instead is a sensory fact: the inability to separate oneself from the Earth.
Digital Earth Art® does not aim to be understood through explanation or theory.
It does not describe environmental issues, demand correct attitudes or actions, nor pursue enlightenment or redemption.
What the work presents is the experience that environment has already come into existence as sensation, prior to thought, judgment, or interpretation.
This coming-into-existence does not require the viewer’s consent or agreement.
External criteria such as evaluation, meaning, correctness, or interpretation play no role in the work’s establishment.
Within the immediacy afforded by digital environments, the fusion of portrait and Earth appears directly as visual experience.
The viewer cannot retroactively negate or cancel that experience.
The philosophical ground of Digital Earth Art® lies in Sensethics.
Sensethics is an ontological premise that holds that ethics arises first as sensation, prior to its formation as judgment or norm.
Digital Earth Art® does not advocate Sensethics.
Sensethics is positioned solely as a root condition that supports the experience which has already come into existence within the work.
Digital Earth Art® is not art created to protect the environment.
It is a form of digital environmental establishment art that comes into existence by rendering the environment impossible to treat as an external object.
