Imaging and Concept
Naturally, any attempt to design that simulates life should be based on life. For the character designer, it is important to practice drawing a live model, and to have a basic understanding of the figure and proportions. For those who don't have an opportunity to take a life drawing class, there are links to a number of online options on our Resources page.
Warming Up
Start with gesture drawings. These are quick drawings meant to capture the essence of a pose.
3 1-minute poses
3 5-minue poses
Settling In
Move on to longer poses.
1 30-minute pose focusing on the whole body
1 30-minute pose focusing on just the face and torso
Taking It Further: Stylizing
Transform your life drawing into a stylized character design. This set of drawings is headed towards animation design which can contain humor, while game design tends to be more realistic and dramatic.
