Biography

Diego Pinera

The drummer Diego Pinera grew up in Montevideo (Uruguay) and has now been living in Germany for several years.  He studied drumming at the Berklee College of Music (USA), at the University of Music in Havana (Cuba) and at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig.  He received lessons from Danilo Perez, Bob Moses, Jose Luis Quintana ‘Changuito’, and Kenwood Denard.

Back in Uruguay he founded the Diego Pinera Trio and recorded the CD Buscando under the Perro Andaluz label.

He eventually returned to Germany, where he founded the Berlin Quartet and recorded Reflexiones featuring Tony Lakatos.  In 2014 the Jazz Thing Next Generation Series Strange Ways followed.  Pinera recorded his current album My Picture with Mark Turner and Ben Street in 2015 in New York. In May 2016 he played the cd.real.tour with Donny McCaslin and Phil Donkin.

As a sideman he played with musicians such as Nil Wogram, Donny McCaslin, Jerry Bergonzi, Ronny Graupe,Philipp Gropper, Danilo Perez, Hans Glawischnig, Dan Tepfer, Alex Sipiagin, Miguel Zenon, Wilson de Oliveira, Tony Lakatos, Nene Vazquez, Joe Gallardo, Katja Riemann, Nils Wogram,Scott Colley,Mark Turner and Paul Brody.

With his Trio he achieved in his compositions a new, unusual approach to Latin Jazz. Sometimes this approaches Pop and Modern Jazz, sometimes he concentrates on the original, multi layered rhythms of this improvisational music.  Pinera’s playing is nonetheless always grounded in the Latin American musical tradition.

Diego Pinera was nominated in 2015 for the ECHO Music Prize in the category ‘Best Instrumentalist of the Year’.  In 2017 he received the prestigious prize ECHO Jazz for his album‚ my picture‚ as best instrumentalist national beside of his colleague Antonio Sanchez in the international category.

In 2018 he released his Album‚ "Despertando".  It was his debut with ACT Music.

In january 2021 he release his Album  "Odd Wisdom" by ACT Music

Diego Pinera wurde 1981 in Montevideo, Uruguay, geboren, lebt seit 2003 in Berlin. Er studierte am Berklee College of Music (USA), an der University of Music in Havanna (Kuba) und der Hochschule für Musik und Theater Leipzig (Deutschland). Pineras Begegnungen mit der lateinamerikanischen Musik und dem Jazz in all seinen Facetten haben ihn zu einem unverwechselbaren Stil geführt. Durch die Kombination seiner fortschrittlichen Rhythmusauffassung, eines Jazz-Sounds mit Latin-Touch und der Freiheit der Improvisation kommt sein starker Charakter plastisch rüber. In der Musik von Pinera gibt es musikalische Komplexität und Virtuosität, sowie auch großer Subtilität. Diego Pinera gewann als Bandleader und Komponist den ECHO 2017 mit seinem Album „My Picture“ und seinem ACT-Musikalbum „Odd Wisdom“ feat. Donny McCaslin wurde in die GRAMMYS 2021-Auswahl aufgenommen.

Mit diesem Projekt ist er bei der JazzBaltica 2022 augetreten und die Performance wurde vom ZDF live mitgeschnitten. Er ist auch ein First Call Session/Tour/Sideman/Clinician und tourt mit vielen verschiedenen Besetzungen und Bands um die Welt. Im Oktober 2022 erhielt er einen Lehrauftrag an der renommierten Hochschule für Musik Dresden Carl Maria von Weber.

ECHO JAZZ AWARD 2017

My Picture captivates with the crooked bars characteristic of Piñera and a melodious use of the drum set, for which he is awarded the ECHO JAZZ in March 2017. The publication is crowned by six live dates with Grammy award winner Donny McCaslin, who just recently finished recording David Bowie's last album.
