Plot
Sidhu (Akshay Kumar) is a hapless cook who works at his adoptive father Dada's (Mithun Chakraborty) food stall in Chandni Chowk, one of the oldest and busiest markets in Delhi. He dreams of escaping his mundane life and becoming rich and famous. One day, he finds a potato that resembles the Hindu god Ganesha and believes it to be a sign of good fortune. He takes it to a local astrologer Chopstick (Ranvir Shorey), who tells him that he is destined for great things and advises him to travel to China.
Meanwhile, in China, a ruthless smuggler named Hojo (Gordon Liu) is terrorizing a small village that is protected by an ancient prophecy. The prophecy states that a warrior named Liu Sheng, who once defeated Hojo's ancestor, will be reborn and save the village from Hojo's tyranny. Two villagers, Chiang (Roger Yuan) and Meow Meow (Jun Li), are sent to India to find Liu Sheng's reincarnation. They come across Sidhu's potato and mistake it for a holy relic that belongs to Liu Sheng. They convince Sidhu and Chopstick to accompany them to China, where they are welcomed as heroes by the villagers.
Sidhu enjoys the attention and luxury he receives in China, but soon realizes that he has been duped into facing Hojo and his army of thugs. He tries to escape, but is stopped by Sakhi (Deepika Padukone), a beautiful Chinese-Indian model who claims to be his lover from a previous life. She tells him that he is indeed Liu Sheng reborn and that he must fulfill his destiny. Sidhu reluctantly agrees to train under a drunken kung fu master named Loong (Chia-Hui Liu), who is also Sakhi's father.
Meanwhile, Chopstick meets his twin brother Mikki (also played by Ranvir Shorey), who is a smuggler working for Hojo. Mikki betrays Chopstick and reveals Sidhu's true identity to Hojo, who kidnaps Sakhi and Loong and challenges Sidhu to a final showdown. Sidhu, with the help of Chopstick and the villagers, manages to rescue Sakhi and Loong and defeat Hojo in an epic battle. He then returns to India with Sakhi, Chopstick and Dada, who reveals that he is actually Sidhu's biological father.

Production
Chandni Chowk to China was conceived by Akshay Kumar, who wanted to make a film that would showcase the cultural and historical connections between India and China. He approached director Nikhil Advani, who had previously worked with him on the 2003 film Kal Ho Naa Ho, and writer Shridhar Raghavan, who had written the 2006 film Bluffmaster. The trio developed the story and screenplay over a period of two years, drawing inspiration from various sources, such as the Chinese novel Journey to the West, the Indian epic Ramayana, and the Hollywood films Indiana Jones and The Matrix.
The film was produced by Ramesh Sippy, Mukesh Talreja and Rohan Sippy under the banner of Orion Pictures, in association with Warner Bros. Pictures. It was the first Indian film to be co-produced and distributed by a major Hollywood studio. The film's budget was estimated to be 80 crore (US$11 million), making it one of the most expensive Bollywood films at the time.
The film's principal photography began in January 2008 and lasted for about nine months. The film was shot in various locations in India, China, Thailand and Malaysia. The film's climax was shot at the Great Wall of China, making it the first Indian film to do so. The film also featured several Chinese actors and stuntmen, who were hired to give the film an authentic look and feel. The film's martial arts choreography was done by Huen Chiu Ku, who had worked on films such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Kill Bill.
The film's music was composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, with lyrics by Rajat Arora. The film's soundtrack album featured eight songs, sung by various artists such as Kailash Kher, Neeraj Shridhar, Anushka Manchanda and Bohemia. The film's title song "Chandni Chowk to China" was a rap song that blended Hindi and Mandarin lyrics. The film's songs were well received by the audiences and critics, and became popular among the youth.
Reception
Chandni Chowk to China was released on January 16, 2009 in India and overseas. The film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. Some praised the film's humor, action sequences and performances, especially of Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone, while others criticized the film's plot, direction and length. The film was also compared unfavorably to other Bollywood films that had explored similar themes, such as Singh Is Kinng and Kung Fu Hustle.
The film was also a commercial failure at the box office, earning only 65 crore (US$9.1 million) worldwide against a budget of 80 crore (US$11 million). The film failed to recover its production and marketing costs, and was declared a flop by trade analysts. The film's poor performance was attributed to various factors, such as high expectations, negative word-of-mouth, piracy and competition from other films such as Ghajini and Slumdog Millionaire.
However, the film has gained a cult following among fans of Bollywood and kung fu cinema, and is considered one of the most ambitious and unique crossover films in Indian cinema history. The film has also been appreciated for its attempt to bridge the gap between two ancient civilizations and cultures, and for its showcase of Chinese martial arts and philosophy. The film has also been screened at various international film festivals, such as the Shanghai International Film Festival and the New York Asian Film Festival.
