The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) is an independent, nongovernmental certification body that develops and administers board certification examinations in recognized pharmacy practice specialties. BPS was created on January 5, 1976, by the American Pharmaceutical Association (now the American Pharmacists Association, APhA), and exists today as an autonomous division of APhA.

BPS has established a specialty council for each recognized specialty. Specialty councils work with the Board to develop and administer psychometrically-sound and legally defensible certification examinations, consistent with the credentialing of health care professionals. A specialty council is comprised of at least 10 members who are board-certified in that specialty area. Each specialty council may include up to two additional members, each of whom may be either board-certified in that specialty area or a pharmacist not certified in that specialty area but with other qualifications and/or expertise pertinent to the specialty area. BPS-certified pharmacist specialists are recognized for their specialized knowledge and skills by many government and regulatory agencies. BPS certification does not confer the privilege to practice pharmacy in the U.S. or in any other country. The following are examples of specific benefits that may be realized by BPS-certified pharmacist specialists:

BPS is committed to protecting confidential or proprietary information related to applicants and certification holders, as well as the examination development, maintenance, and administration process.

Individual examination results are considered confidential. Scores are released only to the individual candidate unless a signed release is provided in advance. Results are not released by phone, fax, or email. All personal information submitted by applicants and certificants with their application is considered confidential.

BPS retains examination results, examination administration records, and active applicant data indefinitely. BPS retains submitted paper documentation for one year. After one year, BPS shreds those documents. Applicants/certificants should retain their own copies of all documentation sent to BPS.

Complete eligibility requirements for each specialty can be found on the BPS website. All practice experience must be completed post-licensure/registration as a pharmacist. For examinations in the windowed testing format, all practice and educational eligibility requirements must be met prior to the candidate sitting for the examination. For examinations in the continuous testing format, all practice and educational eligibility requirements must be met before submitting the application.

If education was completed outside of the U.S. but are current pharmacist license/registration is held in the U.S., Australia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, or Singapore, graduation documentation is required. If practice experience was completed outside the U.S., Australia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, or Singapore, a copy of pharmacist license/registration for that timeframe is required as part of the application.

Throughout BPS specialty certification examinations, measurements from laboratory test results are expressed in metric units. A conversion chart is NOT offered as part of the examination. A reference table of normal lab values is NOT provided during examination administration. Candidates should take this into consideration when preparing for the examination.

BPS is aware that examination items dealing with procedures or regulatory issues in the U.S. may not be necessarily pertinent to candidates who practice in other countries. However, all candidates are given the same examination and are held to the same standard regardless of the country in which they practice and the regulations under which they practice.

Applicants will be notified by BPS via email of their eligibility to sit for the examination within 30 calendar days of the receipt of their completed application and fee. Candidates should keep a record of their unique candidate eligibility ID number and use it in all correspondence with BPS, regarding the examination. For the steps following application approval, see the section titled Scheduling.

Application fee payment must accompany the completed application . The fee for first-time applicants is $600 USD. Candidates who have failed a certification examination within the past 12 months have the option to apply for a retake examination for a reduced fee of $300 USD.

A candidate is allowed two retake examinations with a minimum of 90 calendar days and a maximum of 200 days between each retake. If a passing score is not achieved after the third attempt, the candidate must wait 12 months to submit a new application, pay the application fee of $600 USD, and begin the process again.

Prometric provides telephone and email support to candidates on matters related to scheduling an examination appointment. Prometric provides a voicemail box for inquiries outside of normal business hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (U.S. Eastern Time).

BPS candidates may schedule their examinations at more than 200 test centers within the U.S. and more than 200 test centers outside of the U.S. Locations can be found on the Prometric Website. The Prometric network available to candidates generally has ample seats to meet demand for the BPS examinations. Prometric will employ reasonable efforts to secure the test center and date requested by the candidate; however, BPS cannot guarantee availability of an examination session at a specific location within the designated period. Seats are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, based on test center availability. It is recommended that examinations be scheduled as soon as possible.

Jewelry outside of wedding and engagement rings is prohibited. Do not wear other jewelry during testing. Hair accessories, ties, and bowties are subject to video inspection. Use of ornate clips, combs, barrettes, headbands, tie clips, cuff links and other accessories is prohibited during testing, and candidates will be asked to remove these items. Violation(s) of this protocol may result in the termination of examination and notification to BPS.

Candidates may cancel or reschedule a certification or recertification exam up to five (5) calendar days prior to the scheduled examination appointment. Cancellation/Rescheduling fees will be charged as follows:

Candidates for specialties in the windowed testing format may withdraw from the March/April or September/October examination prior to the close of the application deadline by submitting a withdrawal request in their MyBPS profile.

Candidates whose withdrawal request is approved will be refunded the examination fee, minus administrative charges. BPS will retain $200 USD for administrative costs and an additional $50 USD will be retained if the examination has been scheduled with Prometric.

Candidates who receive a denial of their withdrawal request will forfeit all fees. If the withdrawal request is approved, all administrative fees will apply.

Application fees for candidates in windowed testing format with an approved deferral request outside of the calendar year, from September/October to March/April of the following year, are non-refundable. If an exam appointment is pending, the candidate must cancel the appointment and pay the cancellation fee before submitting an extension.

For windowed examinations, supporting documentation must be submitted to BPS within seven calendar days after the last date in the examination administration window in which they were registered to sit for the examination.

Candidates for specialties in the continuous testing format may request an extension to the 365-day eligibility period if they are unable to test during that period due to an emergency. Requests for an extension to the 365-day eligibility period will also be subject to any associated reschedule/cancellation fees. For continuous examinations, supporting documentation must be submitted to BPS 30 calendar days after the original testing appointment.

A BPS specialty certification examination samples the knowledge required to perform the tasks in each of the major areas of responsibility of the specialty as defined through a job analysis. The examination does not attempt to test knowledge at all levels or settings in the specialized practice area.
