Debanjan Guha Roy, PhD
Assistant Professor, Dept. of Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, IIT Jodhpur
Affiliated Faculty Member, Centre for Emerging Technologies for Sustainable Development (CETSD), IIT Jodhpur
I am a geoscientist with a specialization in "Geological Engineering". My research is focused on developing new energy geo-technologies for hydrocarbon production, studying emergent geo-energy solutions and storage, and devising the application of geoscience in cross-disciplinary engineering problems. We integrate fundamental concepts in geomechanics and mechanics of porous media, engineering geology principles, lab-based experiments, and advanced numerical simulations to understand various geo-engineering processes.
I also work closely with the construction materials industry, oil and gas industry, mining industry, and solar/wind park operators to help them solve a myriad of technical challenges.

Major Research Themes
Rock Mechanics of Cryogenic Fracking: Hydraulic fracturing for shale oil and gas production is not viable in different parts of the world for its requirement of high-volume of freshwater, the use of carcinogenic compounds, the potential for irreversible groundwater contamination, and the creation of artificial earthquakes. Therefore, many alternate water-less fracking technologies are being investigated to check their feasibility. Among them "cryogenic fracking" is one of the strongest contenders for future deployment. The current research project aims to understand the rock mechanical response of sedimentary rocks while undergoing cryogenic fracking.
Sand Migration and Mitigation Measures: The existing and upcoming Solar Parks of Rajasthan, India, are facing extensive issues, such as inundation by dune migration and instability due to the erosion of sands. Our research focuses on unveiling dune migration patterns, evaluating different techniques to stop erosion, stabilize dunes, and protect infrastructures against sand-blasting. We work closely with solar park operators in studying and implementing these measures.
Design of Water Filter using Natural Materials: We are investigating natural and engineered rocks from Rajasthan for their ability to remove various groundwater contaminants.
