Decades of EXtragalactic Workshops
9th - 10th January 2025
The frontiers of modern astronomy are being pushed ever further by cutting-edge observational technologies and advanced computational models. This DEX meeting will explore the latest developments in the study of the Universe, from our immediate cosmic neighbourhood to the most distant galaxies, highlighting the crucial role of new observatories and simulations in expanding our understanding of the Universe and of our Standard Cosmological Model.
The advent of next-generation facilities like JWST, and the up-coming Vera C. Rubin Observatory and the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), will revolutionise our understanding of galaxy formation, stellar evolution, and the intergalactic medium. Alongside these observational breakthroughs, cutting-edge simulations on cosmological scales (e.g., DMO simulations like SWIFT, Arepo and EuclidFlagship, and hydrodynamical simulations like Eagle, OWLS and Illustris) are providing critical theoretical frameworks of sufficient accuracy and precision to test these new data. We will bring together both observers and theorists to discuss the new advances on our understanding of galactic and cosmological evolution across cosmic time.
Following the tradition of previous DEX workshops, we are bringing together researchers at all career stages - from Masters students to Professors - whose work spans scales from sub-galactic to cosmological distances to discuss advances in modelling and observation techniques in astronomy.
Breaking the tradition of previous Durham-Edinburgh eXtragalactic workshops, we introduce the newly named Decades of EXtragalactic workshops. This new name recognises both the long history of these workshops, but also how they have grown and expanded over the past few years to include contributions from St Andrews, Lancaster and Newcastle.
This meeting will be held in Newcastle upon Tyne: a virtual attendance option is available although we encourage attending in person. Pre-registration and abstract submission is now open. A preliminary programme will be released soon.
All in-person participants must confirm their attendance by registering and, if applicable, paying the conference dinner fee (see Registration page). Registration for virtual attendance will remain open until the start of the meeting.
More information regarding the format of the meeting are provided in the Information page.
We expect all attendees to adhere to the DEX code of conduct which can be found here.
