It's in my Genes
It's in my Genes
Hello everyone,
Today I just wanted to share a little about my family, so here it goes. Writing kind of runs in my family's blood. Two of my great grandma's where "writers". This blog is going to focus on my Dad's side. I'll post one on my moms side on 8-9-22.
My dad's mom's mom, Hellen, published her first news articles at fourteen (the same age I was when I became an author). She published three articles, that I know of, at fourteen, two of them won awards, we don't know about the other one.
She latter got a job working for the local newspaper despite growing up in a time where women stayed home while the men went out to work. She really represented the generational shift for women.
All of her writing started off as children's books. She wrote the Reindeer's new Boots, and my grandma, who was twelve at the time, illustrated it. She wrote the Chocolate Mouse, also illustrated by my grandma. There where many newspaper articles written about her books.
Here my Grandma Sandison (age 12) is standing next to her mother, reading the book while the pages lay out in front of them waiting to be cut and turned into a story. To save money they printed the illustrations in black and red ink.

One of the articles premoting her book.
Fun fact: Because my Grandma was under 21 when she illustrated her mother's stories, she could only sign her first name, Janet, on the cover of the books.
Eventually her writing started to shift and in ten years she wrote 120 plays in the span of ten years. Thats one play a month, some with even 3 acts. These play's together took on the name of Homicide Host. Her plays where the first ones, ever in Michigan to be preformed on a train. Her plays would start on a train in Detroit and end at either Willistead Manor or a nearby museum. She would also hand out prizes to audience member that correctly solved the mystery.
She just had this desire to write, if she where alive today, she would be 96 and writing.
Her gift of writing, as it was passed down, slowly turned into a Christ centered gift. My uncle, Ron Sandison is a well known author, who is preparing to publish his fourth book. He started off, just like his grandma, writing fun stories about animals around the age of three or four and today he writes books about autism and Jesus. He is now a well known speaker in Michigan. My dad is also great writer and he uses this gift while preaching. When I was little he would tell us stories. In these storied we discovered tunnels under our house filled with pirates, goblins, and evil angry blanket people. They where so amazing, when my older siblings Max and Ruby first came to live with us, they thought there where real tunnels under our house, but they could never find them.
My family has been so supportive. My Grandma, the one who illustrated Helen's books, told me, "It's really amazing to see generation after generation of strong Christians."
I hope many of you reading this grew up in a Christian house hold. If not, it's never too late to start and build a family of Christians and watch generation after generation pursue him.
Talk to you Tuesday,
Abigail Sandison
