2018 Detroit Charter Revision Commission

The 2018 Charter Revision Commission of the City of Detroit is a public body organized pursuant to the affirmative vote of the people of the City of Detroit at an election held Tuesday, November 6, 2018 to propose revisions to the Charter of the City of Detroit (the current Charter being effective as of January 1, 2012).

UPDATES:

July 7, 2021: The Michigan Supreme Court heard Oral Arguments in the case involving the DCRC- Sheffield v Detroit City Clerk, Lewis v Detroit City Clerk (163084-5). Click Here to watch a recording of the proceedings.

May 24, 2021: The Governor has declined to review the updated version of the Revised Charter submitted by the Commission on May 13, 2021 (which reflected revisions to address the Governor's prior comments). As a result, the Commission will be meeting on June 15, 2021 to confirm the February 27, 2021 draft of the proposed Revised Charter as the version to be considered by voters as "Proposal P".

May 13, 2021: After review of Governor Whitmer's comments, the Commission has forwarded a copy of updates to the proposed Revised Charter of the City of Detroit to Governor Whitmer.

May 6, 2021: During a special meeting of the Commission, the Commission approved the ballot question for the Charter that will appear on the August 3, 2021 ballot.

April 30, 2021: Governor Whitmer returned comments on the Charter to the Commission. The Commission is reviewing her comments and may propose additional changes to the Charter in response to her comments.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING IN-PERSON MEETINGS

On March 23, Governor Whitmer issued Executive Order 2020-21, prohibiting in-person work that is not necessary to sustain or protect life. As a result, all meetings of the 2018 Detroit Charter Revision Commission will be held by electronic means until restrictions on in-person gatherings have been lifted by the Governor.
All meetings will be held consistent with Executive Order 2020-15 and will provide a means for the community to participate. Meetings will be posted in accordance with the Open Meetings Act, as modified by Executive Order 2020-15. Please see the meeting announcement for instructions on how to participate in the meeting.
