The emerging technology of Augmented Reality (AR) is being adopted in various domains including K12 education. When designing the AR learning experiences, several design elements, strategies and processes keep moulding based on the different contexts. In DesignAR workshop, we are considering the current new normal scenario of online classroom versus the physical classroom and the resulting evolution of the design considerations for providing AR learning experiences.
By bringing together the potential participants, the workshop will address the design challenges and considerations in a way that could bring harmony in the teaching-learning practice through well-defined AR design elements, interactions and learning activities.
Thus, the workshop attendees will work together to (1) probe the evolving affordances, challenges and requirements for AR from physical to online classrooms, (2) analyze the suitable design elements and interactions required for students and teachers, and (3) identify the different ways and techniques to design the learning environment for the different targeted skills of the students.
The goal of DesignAR workshop is to provide a unique opportunity to the researchers, EdTech experts, budding designers, and practitioners from design and HCI community to come together and submit their original ideas and thoughts regarding the designerly ways of creating Augmented Reality (AR) learning experience for K12 classrooms.
The workshop focuses on three major concerns in design of AR learning experience for classrooms and we welcome submissions on the same (though not restrictive):
Probing the evolving affordances, challenges and requirements for AR from physical to online classrooms,
Analyzing the suitable design elements and interactions required for students and teachers, and
Identifying the different ways and techniques to design the learning environment for the different targeted skills of the students.
Please submit an interest statement along with your thoughts, perceptions and/or vision on the above mentioned concerns in any of the following forms (though not restrictive):
Work-in-progress write-up (1-2 pages)
Position write-up (1-2 pages)
Demo (1-2 pages)
All submissions to the workshop must be submitted in .pdf format. Font size 11 pt, Times New Roman.
Please email your submission to workshop.marle.k12@gmail.com with the heading ‘IndiaHCI 2020 DesignAR Workshop Participation’. The participants will be selected based on the quality of their submission and interest statement for the workshop.
At least one author of each submission must attend the workshop and register for the conference.
Registration details - for registration visit https://www.indiahci.org/2020/conference/featured-workshops/
Writeup submission: 27-Oct-2020, 11:59pm IST
Registration deadline: 30-Oct-2020, 11:59pm IST
Workshop Schedule: 06-Nov-2020 from 9:30am to 12:30pm IST
The workshop will be held in online mode and will involve design activities, rich discussions and presentations. The participants will get an opportunity to present their work involving the outlook, and/or approaches taken in providing an AR learning experience in K-12 classrooms. The videos demonstrating the different types of applications or solutions can be shown and discussed. The participants will also be encouraged to brainstorm in groups to design an AR learning experience based on certain given templates and scenarios. The overall workshop structure will be as follows:
Organizers’ brief: The organizers will talk about the intent, motivation and background of the workshop (5 mins)
Participants' introduction & Presentation: The participants will very briefly talk on their submission and present their slide and/or vision about the three raised concerns. (2 mins each)
Collaborative Activity 1: Participants are given a context and a template. They collaborate and work in groups to generate the design features, around the given context. (30 mins)
Discussion: Each group presents the design features generated based on the scenario. (30 mins)
Break (10 mins)
Collaborative Activity 2: Another round of group activity is given with a different context. (30 mins)
Discussion: This will be followed by a discussion among all the participants on the overall concerns. (20 mins)
Presentation and Discussion: The groups present, discuss, and argue upon the strategies, design decisions, and methods adopted. (5+5+20 mins)
Reflections: Summary and concluding notes on identifying the design relevance and future collaborations. (Remaining time)
