Cosmetic Dentist Procedures
We develop a smile enhancement plan that will boost your confidence while complementing your overall oral health. Even if you have always practiced good preventive dental hygiene, there are some conditions that require a dentist’s skill to correct.
Procedures
Crowns
A dental crown is a cap that is placed over a tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, and improve its appearance. The crown, when cemented, fully encases the visible portion of a tooth. When done correctly, no one should notice that you have a crown at all.
Veneers
Veneers are very thin, custom-sized shells designed to cover the front surface of your teeth to improve your smile. These shells are matched to color of the rest of your teeth and are bonded to keep them in place for the long-term.
Procedures
Full and partial dentures
Dentures can replace broken or missing teeth and help restore your smile. There are many types of dentures that go beyond full and partial, including conventional dentures, overdentures, and implants.
Invisalign orthodontics
Orthodontic treatments lead to better oral health, a more pleasing appearance, and a smile that is more likely to last a lifetime. The most common form of orthodontic treatment involves using devices such as braces to move teeth, retrain muscles, and affect the growth of the jaw.
Teeth whitening
There are many ways to whiten your teeth at home, but some discoloration resists household products. In certain cases, you need to contact your dentist to learn about professionally applied bleaching products and procedures.

Dental Bridges
Dental Bridges
A dental bridge is a dental prosthesis that is used to replace a missing tooth. This is a popular method to replace teeth, in that the bridge is fixed and cemented in one’s mouth versus a partial denture that can come in and out. A bridge can replace one or more teeth that have been missing for a short period of time, or a long period of time.
Each tooth on either side of the missing tooth is prepped just like it is for a crown, and after an impression is taken of this area, a bridge is made and cemented that replaces the missing tooth. One major advantage to a bridge is the missing tooth can be replaced fairly quickly, without the waiting of a Dental Implant. A temporary bridge is placed that day, and within 2 weeks a permanent bridge is cemented.
Types of Dental Bridges
Just like with Crowns, bridges can be made in different ways. The most popular is porcelain fused to metal, where the bridge has a metal substructure for stability. In this type of bridge, the porcelain is baked onto the metal, and when done correctly can have fantastic results and can last a very long time.
Now with the dental technology of all ceramic restorations, bridges can also be made out of an all-ceramic substance, avoiding the use of metal. In this type of bridge, the substructure of the bridge is made out of a tooth colored ceramic and porcelain is added to this the same way as the bridge mentioned above. With the ability to have the bridge the same color as teeth, the resulting bridge is more natural looking. Another added advantage is that the strength or resistance to breakage in the new all-ceramic bridges is very high.
Cost of Dental Bridges
Fortunately, most Dental Insurances do cover Dental Bridges. Depending on your Insurance, it may cover half or more of the procedure. Without any insurance at all, one unit of the bridge costs around $800. So, if you needed to replace one tooth, and required a three-unit bridge, then the total cost would be around $800 x 3, or close to $2,400. If you are missing a tooth, and want to know your options please call or come in to our Dental Practice for an evaluation. Between a bridge, dental implant or partial denture, we can decide what would be best for you!
Crowns
Crowns on a tooth are needed for different reasons. Basically, a crown (or cap) is a full coverage restoration that covers the entire tooth, thus protecting and strengthening the original tooth. Dr. Curry will always first try to use standard filling methods if a tooth is chipped or broken. When a tooth is broken or chipped to the point that a traditional filling will not work, then a crown is the next step needed to fix the tooth.
Other reasons teeth may need a crown:
Chipped or broken teeth beyond the point that a filling will work
Large metal fillings that need replacing
Large decay is present on the tooth
Cosmetic reasons (ex. ugly dark line at the top of an old crown)
Tooth has had a root canal
Tooth has an old existing crown that needs replacing
Types of Crowns Used at our Birmingham Area Dental Office
There are several types of crowns available today and porcelain (tooth colored crown) continues to be the most popular, mainly because they look so much like real teeth. They are highly durable and will last many years.
Porcelain crowns are custom made to match the original shape, color, width, and height of the tooth. Porcelain crowns can be made of All-Porcelain or be a layer of porcelain that is covered over a metal framework. There are also all metal crowns made of gold and other materials. Dr. Curry will go over each particular case, the price of the different crowns and together we will decide which type of crown is best for you.
Preventive Dentistry
By practicing good dental hygiene, we reduce our risk of cavities, gingivitis, periodontitis, and secondary problems. If you don’t take care of your teeth, you may end up spending thousands of dollars in restorative and cosmetic care.
Preventive dentistry focuses on positive hygiene procedures and daily practices to prevent tooth decay and other oral diseases and conditions. Effective preventive care combines routine, daily maintenance by patients with the recommendations and treatments of dentists like Dr. Stuart Curry.
Procedures
Dental exams
Every new patient to Stuart Curry Dentistry receives a dental exam. This involves dental X-rays to gauge the depth of the pockets around the teeth. Based on these measurements, and by viewing the bitewing radiographs, we determine what if any disease is present.
Cleanings
Routine teeth cleanings are necessary to remove the buildup of tartar and plaque. This buildup is for the most part natural, but too much buildup can lead to gum disease.
Fillings
Dental fillings are a way to restore teeth that have been damaged by decay. The decayed tooth material is removed, the area is cleaned, and the recess is filled with a material of your choosing.
Endodontics
The most common type of endodontic treatments involves root canals. A root canal is performed when the pulp inside a tooth becomes inflamed or infected. The pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned, filled, and sealed.
Periodontal treatments
Periodontitis is a common but fairly preventable disease that usually stems from poor oral care. Most people know that it can lead to tooth loss and gingivitis but are unaware that it is also a risk factor for heart and lung diseases.

Restorative Dentistry
We provide comprehensive restorative procedures for patients who suffer from common oral health problems such as gum disease and tooth loss. These procedures, along with prescribed preventive and any necessary cosmetic care, can restore or improve your smile and overall oral health.
Procedures
Dental bridges
Dental bridges are used to fill the space created by one or more missing teeth. A bridge is usually comprised of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap (called abutment teeth) and features false teeth in between.
Endodontics
The most common type of endodontic treatments involves root canals. A root canal is performed when the pulp inside a tooth becomes inflamed or infected. The pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned, filled, and sealed.
Implants
Dental implants act as replacement roots for damaged or lost teeth. Implants provide a strong foundation for permanent or removable replacement teeth (dentures or bridges) that are custom made to match your existing teeth.
Crowns
A dental crown is a cap that is placed over a tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, and improve its appearance. The crown, when cemented, fully encases the visible portion of a tooth. When done correctly, no one should notice that you have a crown at all.
Full and partial dentures
Dentures are a removable replacement for missing teeth and other tissues that help restore your smile. Complete dentures are used when all teeth are missing. Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.

Therapy at Dr. Stuart Curry’s Dental Office
For every new patient, a dental exam is completed. This is the measurement of the depth of the pockets around the tooth. Based on these measurements and by viewing the bitewing radiographs, it can be determined if Disease is present. If Disease is present, then some sort of Therapy (deep cleaning) will be needed to improve this condition. Most times with Disease there is calculus or tartar present under the gums that is causing the gum inflammation and disease. Regular visits to the Dentist are very important, so that if you do have disease, it can be caught early and treated.
What is Therapy or Deep Cleaning?
Deep cleaning is a cleaning done at Dr. Curry’s office that allows the Dentist to use anesthetic to “numb” up the particular teeth we will clean.
This way the Hygienist can painlessly remove all the calculus and tartar that is present under the gums that is causing the bone loss and disease. Getting all the calculus off the roots of the teeth is imperative, so that the gums can heal and the inflammation of the gums will subside. After the Therapy or deep cleaning is completed, a maintenance schedule will be determined based on each patient’s particular gum health.
Completing therapy is important for many reasons, but the main reason is to improve and maintain the health of the bone that holds the teeth in your mouth. A good, healthy, strong foundation for your teeth is imperative, especially if any restorative work like crowns or veneers is to be needed. Dr. Curry strives to make sure your overall gum health is up to par, before any restorations are started.
Disease “The Silent Threat”
Disease can be overlooked, and can “sneak up” on patients because it doesn’t necessarily hurt the patient, so you may think everything is fine. Just because your mouth doesn’t “hurt,” does not mean you don’t have problems. When the pocket depth around the teeth is greater than four millimeters, it makes it very difficult for the patient to keep these areas clean, as even toothbrush bristles will not reach to this depth and clean the area out. Flossing can really help, but once the calculus has hardened and gotten down deep into the pockets around your teeth, a deep cleaning may be the only way to remove this off the teeth.
Come in today to Dr. Stuart Curry’s Birmingham Dental Office and let’s evaluate and if necessary, take care of any problems you may have. With a deep cleaning, regular maintenance visits and instructions on proper home care, disease can be a thing of the past for you!
