For instance, the well familiar incorporation of whale songs into musical production intended for therapy or use in tailored settings such as ceremonial temples, meditation chambers, training and fitness activities like karate and hiking, or even (and perhaps most importantly) as a foundation for leisure, romance, or personal / group security - sound is a great dampening field for external intrusions upon the atmosphere and mental states.To SYNTHESIZE, or "Re-Create/Replicate": is to invite personality from something borrowed into something new; each voice capable of being produced by an instrument acts as a character in a play. Unlike a movie shot on film, a play is subject to variations from one performance to another.
Here we are reminded of the variety of ways that each culture develops to refer to a single object or idea. We've all heard that Eskimos have 1,000+ different words & phrases for "snow". A synthesizer is a single instrument that has the potential to produce thousands of different sounds; these sounds can be anticipated and controls configured in a systematic way with some study and practice of basic math, logic and design (mileage may vary). The same instrument may be capable of generating unpredictable sounds and patterns, and interact with other sources of audio and/or modulation produced by built-in components or external controls.
Like secrets? Here's one that'll keep you wise:
The Music Industry ... is not interested in deciding what the world hears and doesn't hear or how many people like or dislike particular songs, not so much anyway. What they are really interested in is making us all believe that they know what is what. They simply do what everyone does, they watch for trends and either embrace them, ignore them, or spite them; among these choices the determination is found to involve one thing: $$$ MONEY $$$
Let's take a moment and do some role-play. Don't worry - this ties into the rest of the room, just a few more laps through the loom and we'll have cohesion once-again.
Consider for a moment that you work in the music industry. You're not just some cubicle-warmer without a first name though. You're important. People bring you things to sign and freshen your napkin in the boardroom. Your name has more than once been found etched in brass and hanging in a corridor or a tavern somewhere. But your job isn't the same now as it was when you first started. Much like many musical artists find today, there is an abnormality that has been festering like a dead gnat that crawled half-way nestled into a basset hound's eyelid. At first it was just a kind of flinch, a twitch.. something to swat at but could have been just a hair? But no it was more than that, do I need to say anything about Cobain? About Metallica & Smashing Pumpkins members (nearly?) all shaving their heads as if it was some celebrity dare circulating the scene.
If we were playing pinball, by 1995 all the flags would be lit up and there's one ball left after this one but the high score is nearly triple what's showing.. not to mention you haven't had a smoke in over 4 hours, nerves of steel don't fail now! What I'm getting at is that we've managed to fine-tune a method of generating massive amounts of recorded audio on a daily basis over what's working on being three decades of very 'slim pickins'.
Vague generalizations are dangerous and often foolish but here's one:Electronic music is a lot easier to get over if it doesn't sound that great than other styles of music; yet perhaps it is just the same easier to forget if really good than songs from other genres.For example, a deep-house track that is well-rounded with professional quality blending & arrangement, engaging accompaniment (samples/ambient sounds/organic textures), not too arrogant yet a tonic against monotony; intelligent and relaxed.. or WHATEVER it is that makes a listener wanna ask for an ID.. it may leave an impression but even if you are at a party and you ask the DJ for the track info and you write it down and you take it home and two days later you find the song on YouTube and you listen and it's alright but.. not the same as it was live and probably maybe the drugs helped and..
Compare this to a song like say, "Imagine" by John Lennon. Nearly impossible to forget, right? And aside from being over-overplayed and stirring up complex memories for some, it's a song that most people would be hard-pressed not to like or at least find it difficult to hate. But then it has all that meaning in it.. all those words. You can't really listen to a song like that and get just the instrumental reward, the ideas come with it as part of the package. There's little or no encryption going on with the lyrics, either. Pretty straightforward message: Dude's been thinking the world would be, could be, and probably should be a whole lot different and a whole lot better. Dude has some ideas about how it could be made different and better so he shares them while asking people to join and imagine that these ideas aren't just lyrics in a song but actual the way things are...
Electronic music provides a means to cope with the fact that the world is not how the late Mr. Lennon has Imagine'ed for us......it provides a large reservoir of purely ambiguous listening hours from which to ladle into our hearts and minds some solace, and smith unto our horses' hooves the fortifications needed for braving a world craving new hope for revolution & revival!
