If you want superior maneuverability in tight spaces and a robust locking jaw for off roading, choose Demco 8550048; if you need a seamless factory installation on a Ram truck with heavy-duty durability, choose Generic BnW Trailer Hitches.
• Demco 8550048: Offers an impressive 22-1/2 inches of travel for extreme tight-spot navigation but requires separate rail purchases for bed mounting. Best for owners who prioritize precise cab clearance and secure locking mechanics above all else.
• Generic BnW Trailer Hitches: Features direct OEM puck compatibility that eliminates under-bed hardware clutter but is strictly limited to Ram trucks. Best for Ram owners seeking a clean, rust-resistant setup without extra fabrication.
The Demco 8550048 is engineered for the driver who refuses to compromise on control when backing up a massive trailer into a cramped campsite or navigating narrow forest trails. Its standout feature is the autoslide mechanism, which provides a staggering 22-1/2 inches of travel. This isn't just about convenience; it is a critical safety feature that allows you to pivot the trailer sharply without worrying about the cab clipping the rear of the pin box. The unit also includes 2-3/4 inches of side-to-side travel, specifically designed to keep the back of your pin box clear of bed rails even when using tongue-cover rails. If you are planning to take your rig off roading where space is often at a premium, this range of motion is non-negotiable.
Beyond the slide, the physical construction focuses on security. The wrap-around jaw combined with a locking bar creates a smoother, safer connection that feels more substantial than standard latches. This design ensures that once you lock onto the kingpin, the ride remains stable and secure, reducing the risk of noise or shifting during rough terrain. You also get three vertical height adjustments built right into the unit, allowing you to level your truck and trailer perfectly before you even hit the road. This level of fine-tuning is essential for maintaining proper weight distribution and handling characteristics.
However, this product is not for everyone. It is an above-bed mount system, meaning it does not come with the necessary rails to attach to your truck bed. You will need to source and install those separately, adding a step to the process and potentially increasing the overall footprint of your installation. Furthermore, while it fits industry-standard bed rail mounting, it does not plug directly into factory puck systems like some newer competitors. If you own a Ram with the puck system and want a bolt-in solution that looks invisible, this might feel like overkill or the wrong path entirely. But for those who value maximum travel and a fortress-like jaw, the Demco 8550048 stands out as a serious piece of equipment.

The Generic BnW Trailer Hitches Companion is a specialized tool built for a specific audience: Ram truck owners who already have the factory puck system installed. Its primary selling point is the ability to install directly onto these OEM pucks without any additional under-bed hardware. This means you avoid the hassle of drilling holes or wrestling with clamps and rails underneath your truck. For the owner who wants a clean look and a quick installation, this is the logical choice. The heavy-gauge steel construction is finished with a rust-resistant coating, ensuring that the hitch can withstand years of demanding towing use without corroding, even in harsh winter conditions or salty environments.
The functionality here centers on the slider mechanism, which moves rearward to provide extra clearance between the cab and the trailer during tight turns. Once you are ready to tow, it locks securely into position. The engineering is clearly matched to the vehicle, ensuring a fit that aligns perfectly with the truck's existing structure. This mass contributes to stability, helping to dampen vibrations and reduce sway when hauling heavy fifth-wheel loads. The two-unit count suggests a modular design that likely integrates well with the companion base plate, creating a cohesive towing system.
This hitch is not a universal solution. It is explicitly engineered for the Ram OEM Puck System, meaning it will not fit Ford, Chevy, Dodge (non-Ram), or other manufacturers without significant modification or adapters that are not mentioned in the data. If you do not own a Ram with the puck package, this product is immediately off the table. Additionally, while the slider function provides good clearance, the specifications do not list the exact inchage of travel compared to the Demco. You must rely on the general description of "extra cab and tailgate clearance" rather than precise measurements. If your driving style involves extremely tight maneuvers where every fraction of an inch counts, you should verify if this generic slider offers enough room for your specific setup.

I would buy the Demco 8550048 for my own off-roading adventures because the 22-1/2 inches of travel is simply too valuable to ignore when navigating difficult terrain. In my opinion, the ability to move the trailer significantly away from the cab gives me the confidence to tackle tight campsites and narrow trails without fear of collision. While the Generic BnW Trailer Hitches is an excellent, clean solution for daily highway towing on a Ram, the Demco's mechanical advantages and superior clearance make it the better choice for anyone who pushes their truck beyond the pavement. I recommend the Demco 8550048 if you want a hitch that works harder for you in the most challenging conditions.
No, the Generic BnW Trailer Hitches is designed exclusively for Ram trucks with the OEM Puck System, whereas the Demco 8550048 uses industry-standard bed rail mounting that fits various setups.
Yes, the Demco 8550048 is sold as a hitch unit only; rails are not included and must be purchased separately to complete the installation on your truck bed.
Both units feature slider functionality to prevent cab damage, but the Demco offers more precise measurement of travel (22-1/2 inches) which is beneficial for extreme maneuvering.
