Biographical Sketch
Debi Saini, Ph.D. (Delhi), retired as Professor & Chairperson--Human Resource Management Area at Management Development Institute, Gurgaon (June 2004 to May 2016). After that he has been Professor Emeritus--Human Resource Management at Indian Institute of Management, Ranchi (2017-2019) India. He has been teaching HRM courses to doctoral and MBA students as a guest faculty at other IIMs (Indian Institute of Management) i.e. Lucknow, Kashipur, Amritsar, Jammu, Raipur, Tiruchirappalli, and Sambalpur. He was invited as the first I K Brunel fellow at Portsmouth Business School, University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth, UK during June, 2016. From 2010 to 2016 (for about 25 days each year), he was a visiting professor at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University, Denmark in their summer university postgraduate programmes, and has earlier been a visiting professor at IAE Aix-en-Provence Graduate School of Management, the Paul Cezanne University, Marseille, France; and S.P.J. Centre of Management, Dubai (UAE). He was included in 2010 in Marquis Who’s Who in the World for his professional contribution. In July 2014 he was elected as one of the MTC Top Ten Thinkers out of 50 nominations decided by MTC Global, a Bangalore-based NGO. He has published extensively, and five of his papers have been published in A* international journals.
He is invited as a presenter, discussant, keynote speaker or session chair by academic, research, and business & social science bodies within and outside India, including in UK, Germany, Spain, Greece, USA, Canada, Mexico, South Africa, Taiwan, China, Nigeria, Australia. Among others, some of the forums that have invited him at the international level include: as the keynote speaker at a research & innovation conference organized by Portsmouth Business School, University of Portsmouth, UK (13th June, 2016); as keynote speaker at the 3rd HR Dialogue--2015 organized by the Department of HRM, Faculty of Management Studies, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka (17 October, 2015); invited speaker at the Society for Human Resource Management's (SHRM) 2011 Annual Conference & Exposition held in Las Vegas, USA (26-29 June, 2011); invited speaker at SHRM 2010 Annual Conference & Exposition held at the San Diego at Convention Centre, San Diego, California, USA (26-30 June, 2010); invited speaker at the 30th Annual Conference of the SHRM Global Forum organized by SHRM in Los Angles (19-21 March, 2007); as the keynote speaker at the National Congress of Italian Association for Personnel Management in Sorrento, Italy (2-3 May 2008); and invited speaker at the Global Workforce Roundtable Summit for Corporate Managers of Ten Large Global Companies organized by Boston College Center for Work & Family, Boston College, Boston, USA in London, U.K. (26-29 September, 2006).
His book, Social Security Law in India, has been published by Kluwer Law International, The Hague, 2021. This book also forms part of the India volume in the International Encyclopaedia of Laws--Social Security. Dr Saini has to his credit 93 scholarly articles, management cases and book chapters (refereed) published from India or outside; and 153 book reviews published in the area of management and social science journals. Among others, his papers/cases have been published in Journal of World Business (Columbia), Human Resource Management (Michigan), Asia-pacific Journal of Management, Asia-Pacific Business Review, Zeitschrift fur auslandisches and internationales Sozialrecht (Review of Foreign and International Social Law), Journal of Organizational Change Management, Economic & Political Weekly, Vikalpa, Asia Case Research Journal, Journal of Chinese Human Resource Management, Journal of Indian Law Institute and Indian Journal of Labour Economics. Five management cases authored by him are being sold by Asia Case Research Centre (ACRC), University of Hong Kong or by Ivey Publishing, Canada; and also by Harvard Business Publishing online; and European Case Clearing. These are: Suzuki (MSIL), HMSI, Regency, Flaxo Exports, and Industrial Unrest at TESCO. Three of these cases i.e HMSI, Suzuki (MSIL), and Regency cases are in the "best seller" category at the Harvard Business Publishingsite as well as the Asia Case Research Centre; the HMSI case has also been translated into Spanish language.
Professor Saini has been Editor of Vision--The Journal of Business Perspective, (2005-07; and 2009-Apr. 2013), a refereed management research journal of MDI, published by Sage Publishers. He was the Founding-Editor of Management & Change (1997-99), a bi-annual journal of IILM, and is a member of the Editorial Board of many refereed management and related journals including the Asia-pacific Journal of Human Resource (Wiley) (2012- ).
Among others, he received: best Professor in Human Resource Management award from CMO Asia in Singapore on 31st July, 2013; the Best Researcher of MDI award for 2005 for excellence in research (was runners up for the Best researcher of MDI for 2010 for excellence in research); the Best HR Faculty in India award for 2007 from Amity University, NOIDA, India; the "Best PGHR Teacher of MDI (Students' Choice) for 2009-10 from PGHR batch; and Ram Tarneja award (conferred by All India and Ram Tarneja award (conferred by All India Management Association) for Best paper published in journal, Indian Management, during 2018, which was decided by a jury chaired by Mr Nandan Nilekeni, Chairperson of Infosys Ltd.
Starting his academic career in 1971 as an Assistant Professor at Delhi College of Arts & Commerce (new name), (University of Delhi, New Delhi), he later on served as a Professor (1992-94) at Mahatma Gandhi Labour Institute, Ahmedabad, and Professor of HRM at the Institute for Integrated Learning in Management (IILM), New Delhi (1996-1999). He obtained his doctoral degree from the University of Delhi, a master’s degree in Commerce (business studies) from the Delhi School of Economics (1971) and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Laws from the Campus Law Centre, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. His doctoral research was supervised by Professor Upendra Baxi, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Delhi, and presently Emeritus Professor of Law at Warwick University, UK. He has been certified as a Global Professional in Human Resource (GPHR) by theSociety of Human Resource Management (SHRM), USA in May, 2008.
Professor Saini's research interest areas include: Employee Relations, Industrial Adjudication, Diversity Management, Strategic HRM interventions, HR Innovations and the role of HR department, and Social Security Issues for Organized as well as Informal Sector Workforce. His teaching interest areas include: Strategic HRM, Employee Relations Strategies, Global Human Resource Management, Diversity Management, and Employment Law. His consulting interest areas include: Promoting Cooperative Employee Relations, building Employee Engagement & Employee Cooperation, Transforming Organizations through Proactive People Management, Aligning HR Strategy with Business Strategy, Strategic People Management Interventions, Employment law and Legal & Managerial Aspects of Discipline Management, and Legal and Managerial Aspects of Contract Labour. He has been a participant or presenter of papers, keynote speaker, panelist or session chairperson in over 100 workshops and conferences of academics and management professionals in India and abroad.
He did consulting and MDP programmes at MDI for managers of private and public sectors in the above areas. More particularly, some of his MDP programmes included: People-Management Strategies for Competitive Advantage; Transforming Organizations through Proactive HRM; Changing Contours of Industrial Relations Strategies; Employee Engagement and Employee Cooperation; Management of Contract Labour; and Valuing Diversity for promoting Employee Engagement. He has done MDP programmes/delivered lectures to, among others, senior management officials including CEOs, Executive Directors, Vice-Presidents or General Managers of several organizations including: Vitas Healthcare Ltd. (USA) in Miami; Tata Steel; YKK Ltd.; DSCL Ltd (a division of DCM Ltd.); Ballarpur Industries Ltd., Hero MotoCorp Ltd., Nucleur Power corporation of India Ltd.; Capston Industries, Jullundhar; BSNL Ltd.; Mitshubishi Ltd.; Gas Authority of India Ltd.; Petronet LNG Ltd., Indian Oil Corporation; JK Group of Industries; and Indus-Logic Ltd. He developed, through two-day programs, all 147 first line managers of a large automobile company in one of its plants at Hardwar in "Building employee engagement through proactive employee relations."
Among academic consultancies, he has done assignments for the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM); the International Labour Organization (ILO); and the GTZ (Deutsche Gesellschaftfur Technische Zusammenarbeit: German Agency for Technical Cooperation, Germany).
Professor Saini has been an academic-expert member of the Industrial Relations Committee of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the top most Chamber of Commerce in India. He is a Board member of the Best Practice Institute, Boston, USA. He has been on the Board of “RC-10: Research Committee on Participation, Organizational Democracy and Self-Management” of the International Sociological Association (ISA), and ISA's RC-10 Board Vice-President–Asia and Africa (2006-10). He is also associated with other professional bodies such as Society for Human Resource Management, USA; International Labour & Employment Association (ILERA); the National HRD Network, India; Indian Industrial Relations Association; Indian Sociological Society; Indian Society of Labour Economics; Indian Law Institute; and Law & Society Association, USA. Received Ram Tarneja award conferred by AIMA for Best paper published in its journal, Indian Management during 2018, the jury for this selection was headed by Mr. Nandan Nilekeni, Chairperson of Infosys.

§ The “Best Researcher of Management Development Institute for 2005” award by MDI.
§ Was runners up for the Best Researcher of MDI for 2010 for excellence in research.
§ The “Best HRM Faculty in India for 2007” award by Amity Business School, Amity University, NOIDA, India.
§ As student, received awards at Ramjas College, Delhi School of Economics, and Campus Law Centre of the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, for academic positions in different years during graduation and post-graduation examinations.
§ Received Ram Tarneja award conferred by AIMA for Best paper published in its journal, Indian Management during 2018, the jury for this selection was headed by Mr Nandan Nilekeni, Chairperson of Infosys.
